Around College Basketball

Jeez, what a bunch of traitors. If everyone just stuck together the Pac-12 would survive. You'd eventually get San Diego State and Boise State in there and move forward with that.

No question Big 8/12 has had great teams and great seasons in many sports, but I still don't think the conference name ever came close to the prestige of the Pac-8/10/12.

Someone screwed up royally when it looked like the Big 12 was toast. The other conferences should have delivered the death blow before they were able to recover.

Yormark was a great hire.
They hired a business shark. Not some old stodgy

If Oregon leaves it’s over for the PAC-12. At least 3 schools would beg the Big 12 for admission instantly.

What kind of contract do the new Big 12 teams have? I wonder if there is some conditional period where the fee owed for getting kicked out would be minimal. Why take on teams like UCF when you could get Oregon, Washington, Arizona State, Utah, and Arizona?

Wow. Big #s. I hope Pukon pays $300mm also.
Nw I'm feeling we got duped on the buyout
Of course we did. We had Val and Stu in charge.

Not an apples to apples comparison. FSU’s buyout is so high due to the what some feel is an airtight ACC TV rights deal that ends after the 2035/2036 school year. In short, under that deal, If a team from the ACC leaves, their TV rights does not go with them to be incorporated into their new conference, the rights are retained by the ACC. In order to get out, FSU and whomever will have to pay through the nose not for the regular buyout but to get out of the TV deal.

While I have stated on this Board I wish UConn had a higher buyout amount and the top amount should have been for two to three additional years before it is reduced, no way was it ever going to be in the same area code as what FSU is rumored likely to pay. The BE TV deal ends after the 2024/2025 school year, is not as lucrative and the BE does not have their own TV network.

I think the Big East schools get about 4.5 million per year from the Fox Sports media deal? Big 10 schools are about to get 60 million... The Big 12 schools are getting 30 million. The UCONN buy-out was pretty good given that context.

It will be a very interesting negotiation for this next rights deal.

Yeah criticism of Val isn't really fair, she's done a great job with the conference and hasn't made any mistakes. Challenges vs the Big Ten and Big 12, tons of exposure on Fox, 3 National Championships in one decade, kept up with the times with scheduling/NIL/etc. to keep us a Power conference. I guess some could consider UConn a mistake, but in fairness the Big 12 wasn't interested in them back then (different commissioner), and the ACC GOR looked to have things locked down for more than a decade, too. Things may be changing in the landscape, but the most important thing is we didn't panic after one of our down years by adding A10 bloat.

FYI -- Pac-12 is meeting tomorrow. You'd have to assume it's to go over a media deal. This guy seems pretty confident it's not going to end well. FOX wants to protect their assets from going to ESPN, so it sounds like Oregon/Washington + the Cal schools could end up in the Big 10 after all.

Another wild rumor around is that Florida State and Clemson will make an announcement they're leaving the ACC and going to the Big 10. Who knows if that's true, but by August 15, ACC schools need to formally notify the conference they'll be there for 2024 -- so there is a deadline to know if that'll happen or not.
