Around College Basketball (non-Big East) 2018/19

I think a lot of the AP must be confused with the negative publicity from our easy schedule. To date our schedule is actually pretty good, especially with 4 of the games being away/neutral. The easy portion starts now, with a bunch of home games vs mediocre opponents.

I feel like a combination or our pre-season expectations (which these polls are still widely based on), along with a 7-0 start should get us ranked by now. Why is Creighton ahead of us, for example? Zero pre-season hype. two home losses to Gonzaga/OSU, and only one good win vs Clemson (who isn't even ranked anymore!). Really, this stuff makes no sense whatsoever.

Not a big deal though, just keep winning. Selection committee doesn't look at early December AP polls (or any polls, for that matter).
I dunno about you guys, but with all the advanced metrics we have to properly rank teams (RPI, BPI, Net, KenPom, etc), what is the point of these polls. It's just the random opinions of most likely uninformed writers.
You're right, it's just that they generate a lot more publicity. For example, by default top 25 games are shown on ESPN banners/score pages. Otherwise, nobody would care.

I'd like to see a better metric used, like NET, but that's not happening anytime soon.
I'm not saying do away with the polls, but generate the polls based on a defined metric or something.
Then it wouldn't be a poll. Duh.
Meant "rankings"

I don’t start to really pay attention to the polls until January.

The only polls that matter come out in March when men from boys have been separated.

VCU vs. Texas tonight. A VCU win could help us out. They have 2 tough ones this week with Virginia to follow on Sunday.

And Cal lost to Powerhouse SAN Francisco

SF is 8-1. Minland's son went for 17 and 11 tonight.

They are better than I thought. Looks like they have had a couple good years now.

Prayers & best wishes for this kid. May his love of basketball provide a bit of distraction in helping him get through the loss of his Mom.

Kyle Smith, former Columbia coach, is now San Fran HC & a very good one.

Apologies if this was posted elsewhere, but just saw that Gonzaga beat Washington on a buzzer basket 81-79 after being down 4 close to the finish. Zags shot 19-19 from the foul line. Big win for Zags and they are doing it with one of their best players injured. They have back to back tough games with Tennessee and UNC coming up.

Ah I didn’t realise that. He is a good one. Wouldn’t be shocked to see him move up in the coaching ranks.

I got home late from my Company's Holiday party and caught the second half of the game. Washington was done by 10 and fought back before the Zags built up the again with Washington fighting back to tie it with 9 seconds to go only to have the Zags hit the buzzer beater.

Washington got hosed on some very bad officiating. A lot of phantom calls on their big men.

Oh and Bill Walton has moved up my chart of the worst game announcers. He has to be tough to work with when he goes off on this tangents which has nothing to do with the game. It wouldn't be so bad I guess if he only did it doing stoppage in play, but he doesn't limit it to just that.

LOL, I actually get a kick out of Walton so long as he not doing a game I have a rooting interest in!
