Around College Basketball (non-Big East) 2018/19

UConn loses at home to Arizona, 76-72.

Arizona isn't that good this year and UConn was favored by a couple. Arizona lost 2 games in blowouts to Auburn and Gonzaga.

Yakwe recorded one TO (and nothing else). Wilson went 2/4 with 2 rebounds.

Interesting that the Big Ten starts conference play a month before the Big East does.
Have to, remember B10 going to 20 game conference schedule this year.

You can see UCONN has a pretty good base of talent and it won't take long to turn UCONN around. They are actually a little bit better than I thought they would be this year already. He has a good class coming in as well.

I get that, but we have an 18 game schedule. 2 games can be accomplished in a week not a month.

They go back to OOC games after these 2 games stretches. Then resume B1G play again late December/January.

Purdue is playing four straight nonconference games after this. I'm sure there's some reason why they chose to break it up like this. It's not really to give teams a break, though, since Purdue's next four games aren't cupcake city.

True, but they started this scheduling last year and I think it's really smart. Every team gets a home game before the winter break. Usually by the time the students get back from break in the 3rd week of January there's already been 5-6 conference games. This way the team gets some home town student lovin' right at the start of the conference season.

I agree. Excellent point, @astour - it's a smart move.

Again remember what ultimately prompted that last year. They decided to end their regular season a week EARLIER then other power conferences because they wanted to play in MSG. Thus they lost a week of regular season.

Logistically it is not easy to schedule all of the extra games at the end of December.

Next year, the ACC is actually starting the regular season with conference games. 7 of them, involving 14 of the 15 teams (Duke is committed to the Champions Classic).

They are doing this partially because of 20 conference games (which that league goes to next season, I believe), and to help promote the new ACC televison network, that will be starting up next year.

Forgot about that ridiculous tournament schedule last year,, However moving the games by 3 weeks to make up a 1 week schedule difference indicates both points have some merit.
AP Poll
http://www.syracuse.com/orangebaske...tball_make_it_back_to_the_ap_top_25_poll.html

Others receiving votes: Purdue 100, Syracuse 62, Marquette 47, Iowa St. 46, Texas 44, Creighton 42, St. John's 39, Houston 30, NC State 14, Indiana 13, Arizona 12, Louisville 11, Clemson 11, Radford 9, TCU 9, Notre Dame 3, Arkansas 3, Oregon 3, UCLA 3, Florida 2, Boston College 2, Davidson 1, Oklahoma 1.
This really shows that the vast majority of AP voters don't look at anything aside from the weekly top 25 games. Laughable that Syracuse loses to UConn and a lackluster Oregon team (they've already lost to 3 teams- including Texas Southern), then beats nobody aside from OSU and shoots up in the rankings.

Also, 3 Big East teams with 2 losses each all ahead of us. Those 3 teams deserve their current placements given their tough schedules, but still we deserve more votes given our record.

So we have two top 100 wins ( Rutgers was at 92 when we played them) on the road and on a neutral site ( Miami) but these other 2-3 loss teams are ahead of us?

I think a lot of the AP must be confused with the negative publicity from our easy schedule. To date our schedule is actually pretty good, especially with 4 of the games being away/neutral. The easy portion starts now, with a bunch of home games vs mediocre opponents.

I feel like a combination or our pre-season expectations (which these polls are still widely based on), along with a 7-0 start should get us ranked by now. Why is Creighton ahead of us, for example? Zero pre-season hype. two home losses to Gonzaga/OSU, and only one good win vs Clemson (who isn't even ranked anymore!). Really, this stuff makes no sense whatsoever. Only explanation is writers just pay attention to the top 25 games each week.

Not a big deal though, just keep winning. Selection committee doesn't look at early December AP polls (or any polls, for that matter).

I dunno about you guys, but with all the advanced metrics we have to properly rank teams (RPI, BPI, Net, KenPom, etc), what is the point of these polls. It's just the random opinions of most likely uninformed writers.

You're right, it's just that they generate a lot more publicity. For example, by default top 25 games are shown on ESPN banners/score pages. Otherwise, nobody would care.

I'd like to see a better metric used, like NET, but that's not happening anytime soon.
