April Live Recruiting Periods

LJSA, i would hope you and those who thank you are joking when you continue to act as Employment Counselor for Mike Rice . Why ? He hasn’t gotten a whiff of any Major Job since Rutgers . And , will he ever ? Maybe not ! Live with it ! If Mike Rice got signed affadavits from every Parent and Player that any College is recruiting , absolving him of any future Wrong doing and committing their Son to play for him in any Coaching capacity , then i would say you still have a very slim chance of ever seeing him on the St John’s sidelines . Rice abused College age Players in a way that should have resulted in a lifetime suspension from Div 1 athletics . I doubt any Parent would want their kid playing for him . He did what he did . I would be seriously oppossed to St John’s hiring him . Isn’t it time for you and your Anti Mullin cohorts to drop this insanity . I think many here would welcome that ...

Mullin actually respects Rice & welcomed him to campus several times. What would your position be if Chris did hire him? Supportive? outraged? Diappointed?

I don’t believe Rice is still in play & frankly would not be surprised if Mullin stays pat with staff, but welcome your feedback in ten paragraphs or less. :)
I believe the Gaffney Family have been on the record that CM has been very active in watching their Son’s play since 9 th grade and that a favorable relationship has existed since then with the Player and family . And, as for the more Local talent , many of the Players and their Parents have acknowledged a favorable impression for Mullin and Staff , in the Recruitment process . And , i believe one of our Posters here, Panther, was forthcoming in saying the level of Local Talent available currently is not at the ability level it was in years gone by . I hope i have posted Panther’s post correctly in that regard. And , its a simple fact that many Players locally , as has existed before , want to play outside NYC at different colleges . That’s not Mullin’s fault . Ponds has been the best Player in the local Area in the last 3-4 years and Mullin got him . Let the Recruiting season play out , see what further Players commit here , value the additions for 2018-19 and look forward to seeing what happens .
While Gaffney is a fine recruit he is a 3 star and not a Shamorie Ponds. I agree with you however that the Mo Bamba's of the local area go to the highest bidders and I don't think Mullin plays that game. I think some of us expected a bigger influence of the Mullin name with players like Bol Bol and RJ Barrett but I think that was wishful thinking. The bottom line is that Mullins recruiting ability will be remembered by who he signs in 2019 as St. John's is involved with a number of high level 4 star players. The fans justifiably want to see this staff all over those players. Should they lose every one of them given the won-loss record it would be pretty hard to support Norm Roberts level of mediocrity. It's that simple.
If paying a name coach in the $3 million range is what it takes then that's what they have to do to get the ROI on their investment.

As I have said the April periods are not the be all. And obviously if they have legitimate medical issues then that is certainly a valid excuse. So I am not as worked up as others. Couple of things though:

1) The visits last week were during the week, the verbals came prior to Saturday.
2) You can deputize, as they did this week with Luca, a non assistant to go on road as a temporary recruiting assistant replacement. They could have done that last weekend as well.
3)This staff needs to be working 2x, 3x as hard as everyone considering the lack of success in getting local kids. I mean when you see Jeff Capel and Danny Hurley all over the RIO kids it makes you wonder how hard the SJU staff is working.[/quote

These kids will likely sign early.
I think Shamorie is the only significant early signee since Mullin's arrival.
No reason for any of the staff to be wasting their time this spring/summer.
If anything, the staff has managed to bring Fordham and TIS on the same side.
Bring back the R&P!
I think it was more tame (or is it tamer) than the what hoop forum has become.

Marley Paul‏ @MarleyPaul22

In Indianapolis, St. John’s assistant @gstjean10 watched top targets Jalen Gaffney, Scottie Lewis, Aidan Igiehon, Precious Achiuwa @ UAA then Nike guys Kofi Cockburn, Nate Tabor, Posh Alexander, Jalen Hill today. #sjubb

What is R&P?
I don't think too many staff's at St. John's basketball have brought fans together on the same side.
Mahoney could recruit but couldn't coach.
Fraschilla could recruit and coach but preferred to do it for more money elsewhere.
Jarvis could coach but felt recruiting was below him.
Norm could recruit for Kansas but couldn't coach or recruit at St. John's.
Lavin, in his prime, was an incredible recruiter but was a mediocre coach in big games.
Mullin recruited two good recruiters, lost one, promoted a lamp shade and delegates game prep and game coaching to GSJ, his heir apparent. Fans are so antsy for good news regarding players that they venture to New Jersey to watch the projected 12th man, Marcellus Earlington, play and we compare him to Anthony Glover.
This coaching staff has provided a fair share of fodder to kill a dozen horses.
Ergo, things get repeated over, and over, and over.....
In fact, instead of Karma points (remember those?), I recommend an award certificate to our fans. I know I would have enough to cover my study wall to wall.;)

If he no-shows next April, will you still defend him? How about the April after that? He's getting paid millions to work, but he seemingly isn't putting the work in. I'm not anti-Mullin, I'm anti-lazy.

Religion and Politics. That forum was an enter at your own risk. But it was a blast. Met some of the nicest people there. And many were the ones I would spar against often.

I would say they had very valid reasons for not being off campus last weekend. And from my reading of the board most are delighted with 2 of the 3 very recent commitments.
As for this weekend 2 of our coaches had very important doctors appointments either for them personally or members of their immediate family that they could not miss.
They are not slacking.

Thanks for this info Redmannorth. As I said on my post on this subject "maybe there is an explanation...". You just gave it. Family always comes first. Hope everything is OK and our key targets understand why staff couldn't be there in force.
Interesting info provided. That being said, doesn't anyone think our staff is keeping in contact with these kids to explain why they're not there? Seems like they have valid reasons. Communication is key.

What's interesting is that two coaches had medical appointments on the same weekend. What are the odds? Even more interesting is that the information was available on the Internet. A naive fan would think that these dates in April would have been blocked out unless there was an emergency. Then again, one of the coaches doesn't recruit to begin with so no big deal. Hopefully they are both doing well and will be back in the weeds soon.

Ha! True, indeed. Luca was out there while others chilled in the weeds.
