I watched Auburn at Tennessee this weekend, and it was hard to avoid the conclusion that Bruce Pearl is coaching almost exactly the same system as Mike Anderson. The difference, of course, is the talent level. This SJU team just doesn't have the length and athleticism that are needed for that approach to work against high-level competition.
That can be worked into an indictment of Anderson's recruiting and use of the transfer portal, or it could be worked into an indictment of his lack of flexibility in adjusting his system to the players he has. Or both, I suppose.
Another way to look at it is that the program took two steps forward, now took one step back, and will hopefully take another two steps forward from where it is now, that it's all part of a building or rebuilding project. Not that our fans have one bit of patience for that, but:
Anderson is certainly going to be given some more time to prove that either his system can work in Queens given the recruiting limitations the program has (which I think many underestimate), or that he can adjust his approach to succeed with the players he recruits. Personally I think the former is the more likely of those two options, I don't see a man who's been coaching with a fair degree of success for a long time making radical changes to his approach.
Obviously if neither of those options pans out and the program stalls out at "the top of the bottom of the league" then the university will have to go in another direction, but that time is not now, whether folks like it or not.
