Anderson - is he really the guy ?

I think we have been very patient as a fanbase with CMA.  But year 3 with Champy returning and results had to be had this year.

This is worse then any of us could have imagine.  The pitchforks are out for CMA and rightfully so.  Its not working here.

Starting to question Cragg too. He wanted Bobby Hurley, who is about to flame out in ASU. He basically had nowhere to turn so he went to his Duke guys who recommended Anderson.

Although I think it's pointless at this point to even have this discussion one name I would be interested in Robert Jones from Norfolk St. coach who is from Queens. Keeping him on the radar if anything happens in a year. Realistically I don't see it until 2022-2023 at the earliest.

Don't know much about him but good find. From South Jamaica...See he just got an extension thru 2028.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Jones_(basketball,_born_1979)

Also was named HBCU coach of year

It would be good to see some of these top coaches from HBCU's in lesser conferences get more looks from bigger conferences.

Any other recent ones who have moved from HBCU and putting up strong results?

If this conversation gives you guys hope and makes you  feel better, then I'm all for it. But as much as I hate to rain on your parade, I gotta tell ya, CMA ain't going anywhere anytime soon. There is no way the suits in charge give up on their self-proclaimed "home run hire"  for a very very long time. Especially after handing him a nice extension. I'm guessing, at a minimum he's here for 5 years. And if we even sniff a tourney appearance, likely a lot longer then that.

Let's go back to the guy who should've never been forced out.

Let's go back to Lav.
I liked Lavin, and didn't think we could do much better, but it's not like major college are breaking their doors down to hire him.

Everyone talks about the extension but what is the buyout? They could’ve given him extra years but you can’t be stupid enough to not give the program at least the option of cutting bait at a reasonable price.

This coach is emblematic of the recruits we get. Good character but not the quality needed if you want to make an impact. And we convince ourselves every time that some 3 star kid is going to do wonders just like we convinced ourselves CMA coming here was a blessing as the 7th option.

SJU; where coaching careers go to die.

Try a different conference.  SJU can’t compete on BE level.

2022-2023 is next season.

After many years of refusing to accept that, I'm actually starting  to buy it. I mean, it's been said over and over that we:
Have horrible facilities
Can't find anyone decent to coach here
Are run like a Mom and Pop operation
Have fans that don't donate
Are mismanaged
Won't pay kids
Etc
Etc
Etc

Maybe everyone is right, maybe I just have to accept the fact that our program is doomed for all eternity, maybe even longer.

We may not be able to compete at the big east level but SJU cannot afford to lose the Fox money. Let’s suffer for another year and a half and things may be so bad that SJU may be ready to swallow its pride and hire Pitino. Other than that it will be competing with level 3 players vs level 4 players no matter who the coach is.

Agree.

Fox contract currently ~$4M/yr per team and have to assume it will go up on the renegotiation with UConn, and if Val Ackerman figures out how to land Gonzaga, even higher. Fox doesn't want anyone else.

Now, if we leave, we could shave off some for coaching salaries and misc. but not all of it. Won't happen unless we get kicked out and that's not happening.

Because a sure-fire way to improve recruiting is to drop down to a lower conference.

Exactly, if other things don't change we would suck in any conference.

At this point the Big East, our history, and MSG are the only things this program has that are worth anything. St. John's NET has been 100+ the last couple years BEFORE Big East play, so even if we were to give up Fox money to move down to a mid-major conference to play against crappy opponents in a half empty CA we'd still need to win our conference tournament just to sneak in as a 13 seed. Nobody here is crazy enough to actually want that, but I do think the school needs to seriously consider a buyout (if that's possible). This isn't a Kevin Willard situation, CMA doesn't have a top 10 class incoming (and hasn't recruited anywhere close to his recruiting level at Arkansas). If Willard recruited the same way that CMA has then he 100% would've been gone after year 3 or 4. The only reason he was retained for that long was to give him a couple years with that monster class.

If we don't have a .500 conference record by February then the school needs to have a serious discussion both internally and with major donors about the future and whether they can handle another year of awful results, recruiting and attendance. I certainly think CMA will get a year 4, but they need to have a plan by this time next year if things don't improve. I just hope the school wasn't crazy enough to give CMA an extension with no feasible way out if things went south. Next time they should maybe wait for the coach to make the NIT before offering an extension.

Marquette was 0-3 to begin conference play, look at them now.

Jay Wright got beat by 20 at Creighton this season.

We were 7-7 2-6 last year. So much worse than where we are now. Im not trying to convince any of you to be pleased with what has happened so far, just that the season changes on a dime and will do so 4-5 more times this year.

On the bad side, I have zero confidence facing Willard with a full week to game plan exclusively for 2 games with us. Unfortunately for Mike Anderson, he can’t use that as an excuse, he just has to get it done. Get swept by the Hall and this very unforgiving fan base will reach a new level of unforgiveness.

The thing that's incredibly frustrating and the only reason why this thread keeps going on and on and on is that right now we're a very mediocre team with two of the best players to play for SJU in a long time.

We have a window with Julian and Posh and it's closing fast.

Louie saw it with Mullin and went all out to get Berry, even suing the NCAA. They went to the FF.

Louie had it with Sealy and didn't do much of anything to bolster that team. And they lost to Tulane.

Jarvis had it with Hatten and we went to the NIT.

Maybe this team will turn it on from here on out and be memorable. Just not seeing any signs despite the Gtown drubbing.
To be realistic, neither one of them are NBA-starter level talents. You need more than two good players to win big.

And then we go to Villanova.  This is going to get real ugly if we dont beat SH at home.  Real ugly.

As I said in an earlier post, Posh is not an all  conference performer at this point in his career.  We have one all conference performer, who while a very good player, is not ball dominant and generally cannot create his own shot.   When Julian goes cold, we have few offensive options.
