Somebody, anybody should get on the phone with Mike Dunlop and try to get him back here! Once the kids bought into his system they were a joy to watch! That was basketball not this sh-t we are witnessing! Remember when those kids knocked off 4 Top TEN TEAMS in as many weeks! Maybe he’s available!
NBA job with no recruiting grind means you'd have to really go nuts with an offer. And if you are going to go nuts with cash, you'd go a different direction. And this is from someone who loves the guy.
I don't think he'd take the job here, anyway.  By all accounts, he hated NYC, and Lavin had to practically beg him to come over in 2010.

Not His fault the new players are not big east caliber all the replacement players  are truly Play at the Vermont and Hofstra level.

I think the program is so damaged at this point that even when we do inevitably move on from Anderson we won’t be able to lure any big names.

If I were Cragg I’d move on from Anderson ASAP and hire an up and comer like Shaheen Holloway before Willard leaves for Maryland and Seton Hall snatches him up.

Assuming you are talking about it not being our coach's fault, didn't he recruit the replacement players? That is after all a pretty important part of his job.

I love your consistent positivity. Can you cover $10 million of Anderson contract?

And there lies the problem!

Unless we move the school out of the NYC area, he will never come back.

I do think his best fit is as a top assistant (his record as head coach at LMU was not good), but let's give Lavin credit for recognizing that he needed Dunlap, or someone like that, in order to have success.  Sort of like Torre and Zimmer, they were perfect compliments to each other, but you rarely see assistant coaches get hired for reasons like that.

After Dunlap left (and you can't fault anybody for that - the opportunity he got was too good, plus he hated New York), Lavin tried again with Whitesell.  Didn't work out, but I appreciate that he again went for someone who covered his weaknesses.

My thought process was to hire Dunlap as an assistant coach not as a Head coach! Since we are married to Anderson for 5 more years this would make more sense! There is no way SJU is going to pony up 10 mil to buy out his contract!

The loss today was pretty sobering, on a number of levels. It is pretty much a slap of reality that this team really, isn't that good. The transfers we brought in for the most part are underperforming what we expected. On the surface it doesn't appear there is  a lot of hope for this season, even with Champagnie back.

On the other hand, when considering if CMA is really the guy, I feel like you have to take into consideration the circumstances of which he was hired. We almost ended up with a lot worse running the program. I say that to say, this program really isn't a destination at this point, so I'm not even sure that moving on from CMA to someone else will solve anything. Just have to hope for the best.

As with so many other days, it's been a tough day to be a Johnnie fan. Pretty sure it's been a tough day to be CMA as well. Not saying there aren't legit reasons to have doubts, but always better to give someone a little slack when they have a bad day which Coach did.
Need to remember that CMA at least met expectations his first two years and this year is not over yet. I am hoping Coach is having a come to Jesus talk with himself tonight and he will show the ability to change things that are not working. If we don't dance, it's a big miss but season isn't over yet.

It is all his fault. He is the head coach. If a mass exodus of players happens at season end then it will be interesting to see what happens.

You could higher the guy from Monmouth also, King Rice. He would be a good hire.

A couple of things.

1) if you are hoping for a coaching change at year's end forget it not happening.

2) this was a terrible loss but lots of season left let's see what happens.

3) biggest issue is talent. Some of these transfers that were talked up in pre-season are just not that good. Recruiting has to pick up.

So in closing I think this roster is overrated based on some of the early press clippings.  But let's see how Mike adjusts.

I hate to admit it it but it appears my pal Monte was right about CMA’s hire.

Although CMA’s contract likely gives him discretion on who is hired as his basketball assistant coaches within the financial constraints of the program’s budget, AD Cragg  should nevertheless push CMA to reconsider his nephew TJ Cleveland’s position as Associate Head Coach.

I am unaware of any recruiting successes Mr. Cleveland can point to at St. John’s.  The overall talent level of this St. John’s team is among the bottom of the Big East.  If you removed Champanie from the discussion and to a lesser extent Posh, there are not many of the other StJohn’s players on this year’s roster who would start for, or in many instances would even play a significant roles on a majority of Big East of P5 teams.

St. John’s needs to step up  the talent level on its roster, and the current staff seems incapable of accomplishing that goal as evidenced by the current roster, and the fact we celebrate this years signing of one 4* recruit at the time when many other Big East teams have multiple 4* players already on their roster, or are already on their in coming 2022 class.

Yep, the number of stars a recruit receives by Rivals, ESPN or 24/7 is not definitive of their ultimate success in college basketball, and yes, occasionally a low star recruit surprises, but the cold hard fact is that there are many- many more 4* and 5* recruits that are starters on top 25 programs than no* or 2* players on those top 25 programs.  Conversely, there are more low * recruits on the year in and year out losers than 4* and 5* recruits.

Let’s hope that this sh*t show gets turned around this season so I can tell my pal Monte that he was wrong.

seasons greetings.

——-

St. John’s has completed 11 of its scheduled 30 regular season games.

The time to see how CMA adjusts was during the off-season, or in preseason practices, or in early non conference games.  January Big East conference games is not the time for CMA to tinker, experiment, or adjust.  Adjustments should have been figured out months ago.  This is his third season at St. John’s it is now his program, no one else’s.  CMA  selected the men’s basketball staff.  If his staff is not accomplishing the tasks then the buck stops with CMA.

I think we have our coach until his contract expires.  Let’s hope he learns to adjust.

I'm thankful that this forum exists to allow this thread I started a few bad games ago to continue.

While I know Anderson is unfortunately not going anywhere for 5-6 years, and we cannot afford, or attract better here, its a great outlet to sometimes just vent so I don't ruin the weekend with my wife & daughter because of the excitement prior to game that ultimately leads to thinking this team will never be great.

9 hours later, I still wish we had a coach who could get quality players and actually coach vs. babysit, I still love this team and just wish we could just play basketball that's enjoyable more often than frustrating or headscratching.

I do hope the virus stays at under control enough as I'm looking forward to the Marquette game I have tix for.

Ryan Odom didn't even want to interview for the job, then took Utah St. Probably says a lot about how up-and-coming coaches view the gig.

For those of you who want Anderson out as soon as possible, he's never going to embarrass the program off the court, so there will have to be a lot more days like this to get the job done. I'm not ready to root for that. I was with Norm, but not there with Anderson.

Love your passion RSNC. Like me and so many others, you live and die with this team. Lots of posters don't get it. F'em' all!

Not offering up an opinion on CMA but those saying there is no way he would be let go because  the contract extension would make it financially prohibitive, I say au contraire. Length and salary would not be determinative it would be the terms of the buy-out which I would venture to say no one on here is privy too. This doesn't even take into account the tremendous turnover in head coaching positions in both college football and college basketball all in the name of winning because schools realize it takes spending money to make money at least that is the goal. Besides weren't we paying like 3 head basketball coaching salaries at one point in the past, not to mention a hefty salary for a fired assistant?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the prior administration also agreed to absorb some of Bobby Bo's salary?
