Amir Garrett

I think he may have just been saying that that is the first day he can suit up. The kid just finished his finals, no way the NCAA has cleared him yet.

Awesome news. He won't be a savior but he's much needed.

Amir did what he needed to do in the classroom and he never wavered in the face of adversity.

D@mn I wasn't going to the game because of work but I seriously need to try and reschedule everything to go.

Amir's 1st time getting into the game I hope he gets a standing ovation

Agreed and I hope that attitude and maturity foreshadows him coming in here and becoming a leader for this group, something I think is very much needed. Just my impression and opinion, all our newcomers are good players but none seem for whatever reason to be leaders.

Hard to say that Logen. I think that many looked to guys like Lindsey who are older to be the leader. He quit on them. Only now can we start to see who will emerge. Sometimes it takes time for a young group like this one that is very thin on the roster to form leadership roles. They are also without their head coach right now. It's a tough time for them and they are responding relatively well IMO. All these kids have bright futures here on the bball court, especially with the experience they get this season and the playing time. Amir is another one who will help in all areas including hustle, leadership and talent. Regardless whether he is a role player or develops into a star, it is these high character kids I like seeing here. They win games and have good careers and represent us well.

I actually think we te going to see Amir be ome the leader of this team.... He is very much a glue guy which is something this team needs!!

Why do you take anything that doesn't say that everything associated with SJU is just the greatest as criticism? I don't care about Lindsey, he's not here anymore and the fact that the head coach is not here is all the more reason to hope a player steps up into a leadership role, something all good teams need simply because it is a different type of leadership than a coach offers. I don't see any on the current roster doing that but as it is a subjective observance from afar I could be way off as I think saying it is my imression and opinion infers. Anyway, since leadership is primarily a personality and maturity trait, my observation is in no way a criticism of any of the players at all, either as players or human beings. Be a pretty boring board if everyone just kept posting how every SJU player was the greatest in every way, shape and form.

Not taking it that way at all. I'm not saying they are the greatest. You aren't in the practices, huddles or anywhere near the court. Your inference is a bit presumptive to begin with. I'm just saying that the kids are young and leaders usually emerge as time goes on as they're all new. Less than 10 games in their college careers and you're saying that none of them are leaders. Just my opinion.

Having been formally and infomally involved with assorted "leadership" roles and activities most of my life, there is still the question nobody can answer: are leaders born or trained/created/trained? George Washington/ Mark Jackson/Martin Luther? Others? Sherman, Sheridan or Grant???

Sometimes there can be a multi-headed leadership force and maybe this wilwl occur BUT in an yevent:

I love Lavin, his staff, and these young kids AS WELL AS the bright prospects on the horizon.

When we take a breather and look at what Coach Lavin inherited, could we have expected any better than we have? I did not but could have "Says I to Myself" (Walt Whitman who never played college ball etc.) some of our top recruiting class might not pan out; some might have academic issues; some might just not fit in and transfer (as kids at all schools do).

I got spoiled with so much good news at such a fast clip circa 2010!!!

all the best in this great new era (and process) of St. John's Men's Basketball

Does anyone have an official confirmation of when he will get here? This kid is going to be one of my favorites ever even if he only plays 3 minutes a game because he stayed loyal when life didn't go his way. To me that speaks volumes about a person.

Also someone asked about Lavin in Fl. Does anyone know who he was recruiting or scouting?

we're going to need some warm bodies soon because come big east play its going to be ugly when teams start posting up on g.g. and mo and they both have two fouls in the first ten minutes of the game. as sick as this sounds we need a body like coker who can give some fouls

There's going to be less posting up in the half-court because we play a zone. They didn't foul out against UK, which has one of the biggest and most physical front lines around. Garrett will help out because he's played the four in HS,even though he's not a "physical" player.

I don't think you are giving Garrett enough credit for his strength. He is listed at 210 pounds (and at 6'6) on the Bridgton roster. He also has impressed me with the way he carves out space and maintains his position while rebounding. I think he'll be the 2011-2012 Polee (undersized PF), and while he is listed as an inch shorter, Garrett is already 20 lbs heavier than Polee. Polee was also the worst defensive rebouner I've ever seen at that size. Garrrett does have the leg strength to generate a 95 mph fastball and is a downright vicious dunker.

Whenever this kid does take the court, our fanbase needs to give him a long standing ovation. He didn't qualify originally but he did everything asked of him after...from the disappointment of Rise Academy which clearly left a bitter taste in the mouths of Sampson and Pelle, to not only never wavering on his commitment to St. John's, but also continuously recruiting Sampson and Gathers for the program.
