@McMurphyESPN: Catholic 7 schools will keep Big East name, expect to begin new league this fall, sources tell @ESPN
------
Also reporting Butler and Xavier may be the only teams added for 2013-2014 season with Dayton, St Louis and Creighton joining the following season.

The name? Big East for a 12 school league with 7 teams based in the Midwest is ... Well, the schools are east of Tokyo.

The SEC is in Missouri.
The Pac 12 is in Colorado.
The ACC is in Canada.

LOL

I don't see the point of leaving it at an uneven 9 teams. My only guess is that they're having a hard time deciding between SLU, Dayton, VCU and Creighton.

Either way, I'd love for them to start the new league in '13. Let's start some 'Big East' chants at MSG during the BE tourney.

St. Louis is a very important addition because it is a program with great facilities and on the rise. It is also a great sports city and a media hub.
There is no doubt this will be a 12 team Big East by 2014 per Fox $$ initiatives.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/28/sports/ncaabasketball/big-east-considers-selling-its-name-to-departing-members.html?_r=1&

The conference is negotiating to sell its 34-year-old name to the seven defecting Catholic universities — St. John’s, Seton Hall, Marquette, DePaul, Georgetown, Villanova and Providence — that are creating their own basketball conference.

Good article, I think the final line says it best, which is good news for us wanting to keep the Big East name:

Those colleges will almost certainly play for a conference that is not called the Big East.

Seeing the C-7 are all Catholic, it's too bad the Church doesn't sell indulgences any more. IT could make for a nice swap.

I thought Martin Luther already settled that.

According to SNY the C-7 are "still negotiating"to keep the Big East name, plus adding Butler and Xavier with Creigton possibly joining next year.

So in a span of nine months UConn has A) lost the right to participate in the 2013 NCAA tournament, B) lost its iconic men's basketball coach, C) lost every other remaining original Big East member ... plus Villanova, Rutgers, Notre Dame and Louisville, and D) lost the Big East name. That's an insane and unfortunate turn of events, and it's reasonable to wonder if the athletic department will ever recover and find itself in a spot as nice as the spot it enjoyed for more than three decades. But that's another conversation for another day. For now, UConn would just be happy to know what its new league will actually be called because all we know at this point is that it won't be called the Big East.

Expect Memphis as the frontrunner location for the conference tournament of the Artist Formerly Known as the Big East.

It's also another Catholic school, Jesuit, as is Xavier and Creighton. Since most Catholic schools cannot afford big time college football, it kind of fits, but I'm sure that being a Catholic school makes them even more attractive to the core group. It's kind of becoming the next level CHSAA, a CCAA.

Good one even if the last is a bit of a stretch however Canada does border the Atlantic Coast. On the other hand South Bend and Louisville don't BUT we're not talking about one or two but a majority of Big East schools being not in the East but in the Midwest. That being said congrats to all the schools involved. Even a naysayer like me is already looking forward to next year.

Hey Newsie

I saw last night 8 of the 9 teams have made the Final Four :)

But am I reading it right that basically we'd collectively be losing roughly $15 million collectively between the 7 of us for getting out a year early ?
