All Realignment Talk Here

Big 10 did this to lock up the D.C. and New York market.

It will be interesting to see how the ACC responds. Do they decide that they are first and foremost a basketball conference?

On a side note, it's nice to see the ACC blindsided for once. I'd love to see the SEC try to penetrate the heart of ACC country and steal N.C. State and Va. Tech.

I think that Florida State has one foot out the door already, and I think Clemson could leave as well. But in this climate, anything is possible.

Both FSU and Clemson would jump at the chance if the SEC offered.

I don't think the SEC would go after Clemson since they are already represented in the state. Big 12, however. . .

__________

ACC reportedly is in talks with UCONN, Louisville, So Florida and Cincinnati. Given that Clemson and FSU might be willing to (or have a sponser - say, ESPN) pony up the 50 million to leave the ACC that conference might be considering adding three of the four BE teams I mentioned. That way in the even Clemson and FSU leave the conference has the same number of schools as now. If not, they'd be just as happy with two more schools. BE is left scrambling for more CUSA type league teams. Word came out last Friday that East Carolina (ECU) board had scheduled a meeting this week about an "athletic matters". Many took that to mean discussing a bid to replace a BE team. Given one or three current BE teams leave the pickings are ECU, Tulsa, Rice, Tulane, UMASS and So. Mississippi. It's possible Boise State and SDSU might even decide to do a TCU and back out. BE is in no position of strength. BE TV contract has expired and they're in negotiations for a new one. Each defection lessens the amount of any contrac they may get. SJ and the bb only schools were looking at anywehere from 2.5 to 3.5 million if existing schools plus ND had stayed. With possible defections the money drops big time. The bb schools leaving and forming their own conference would be even more disasterous from a money standpoint. If that happened I could see the Atlantic 10 absorbing six of the seven Catholic schools and creating two 10 team divisions. Of course, SJ would now be sharing NYC with Fordham and playing in a conf tournament in Brooklyn, not MSG. MSG would have no tournament unless, of course, one says ACC.

This is starting to feel like another SJU / STJ incident (loosing out on the copyright) where someone is asleep at the wheel while other people make moves.

If I'm BC, I would try to have secret talks with the Big 10.

BC does not fit the description of the "typical" Big 10 school (with the exception of Northwestern):

They are, for the most part, large, research oriented, state schools.

Ohio State, Michigan, MSU, Penn State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota and Purdue.

Rutgers and Maryland fall into that category

DC, maybe.
But NYC? There are probably more Michigan fans in NYC than Rutger fans.

Will be interesting to see if Rutgers beats Louisville and goes to the Orange Bowl.

They would then have to play FSU which could be very ugly.

This will be the last bowl rutgers ever qualifies for.
Mark my words, they'll never go .500 in the B1G.

BE latest asleep at the wheel as when they dilly dallied for almost a year with the ridiculous idea of offering an invite to Villanova to join as a football member rather than go after an established school - Boise St, Central Florida, AFA, etc. Then there was the vote agains Penn State from joinning and the story that made the rounds about the non-FB schools not interested in adding Clemson and Florida State when they expressed interest. This has been a long time coming. Can't blame any school for wanting to jump ship. If SJ got an invite to the Big 10, ACC or Big XII they'd be gone in a hearbeat but unless something were to change the conferences with FB (which runs the show) aren't looking for non-FB schools to be members. I'd love to see the Johnnies in the ACC but ...

Rutgers will be at the bottom of the Big 10 for years and everyone knows that, but we have to agree that they have all of the tools to compete and certainly the fan base to fill up the stadium especially when all of those big names roll into town, they can be a big program in the long run.

There's really nothing St. John's can do at this point. The BEC has been horribly run over the last 10 or so years and are now paying for it.

The fact is our school doesn't play football; therefore, it has no leverage whatsoever in any negotiations. Our administration can kneel and say a prayer that the ACC wants a presence in the NY market, but the chances of that happening are remote at best.

Best thing that SJU and the like schools (Seton Hall, Providence, Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, DePaul) can do is stick together. Perhaps, the BEC invites a host of schools and creates one giant, mediocre conference. It's not an ideal situation, but the schools won't complain about it if they get their share of the TV deal. Or perhaps, the BEC collapses altogether and the non-FB playing schools take off to the A10. Either way, SJU does not hold the cards and in fairness, never did.

call me crazy but what if St. John's goes independent and negotiates deals with MSG, SNY and YES networks. might not be football money but might be more money than a big east deal trickle down.

I won't call you names, but...

Going independant is not a good idea for many reasons:

1. Good luck trying to make a 35 game basketball schedule evey year.
2. Eliminates an automatic NCAA bid. Not to mention, the excitement and money of a post seaon tourney (even if it is watered down in some way).
3. For recruiting purposes. Some kids may sign with SJU just because they were over recruited by another conference opponent, while others may sign on because they know they will be playing once a year in their home town.
4. Even if the first three are all worked out, do you really trust the people in charge at SJU to negotiate any kind of good financial TV deal? Instead of being proactive, these are the guys who have been sitting and waiting for direction, while the conference crumbles.

Can't see how they can compete against Ohio State, Nebraska and Michigan for starters.

+1
Or Wisconsin, Iowa, MSU, Purdue and a rejuvenated PSU.

But Indiana and Northwestern, they can hang with. And their new MD brothers.

The ACC will lose FSU and Clemson soon. Va Tech might not be far behind. ACC football would be ATROCIOUS. Duke, BC, Syracuse, Wake Forest...gross.

ACC's best move is to complete the job it started and take UConn, STJ, Georgetown, and Villanova. ACC is already, at best, a hybrid of the old ACC and the old Big East.

1. Maybe Monash will get off his ass and do his job haha ... but seriously Lavin has a great connections all over the country and the chance to play at MSG puts us in great position
2. If the post season tourney is as watered down as the league, the money wont be good and most likely wont be at the garden, We might loose the automatic bid to the NCAA anyways if everyone keeps jumping ship.
3. Contracts are worked out with other teams (UCLA, Duke) to play them home and home games for 3-4 years in a row.
4. If they want to keep their jobs something needs to light a match under their ass. Ever since Lavin got hired alumni donations are through the roof, and so are the website visits to redstormsports.com, if they want to keep that going they need to do their jobs.

We are in desperate need of a restructure starting with Harrington and moving on down, if the board of trustees doesn't see this then the alumni who actually donate are the only ones with the power for their voices to be heard through their wallets.

If.....
we have a watered down conference and
if Yukon bolts and Louisville leaves....
what are the chances that SJU leaves MSG??? ...
it doesn't pay to rent the arena if we only get 5-7k per game
maybe they'll have 2-3 games a year at MSG?
