All Realignment Talk Here

L J S A,

There are no remaining "big name" FBS schools other than Yukon and Cincinnati that the C7 would have interest in.

My gut tells me that either the B10 and/or the B12 will take additional ACC schools which should provide a safe landing for Yukon & Cincy.

Memphis? Temple? ACC stragglers if Big 12/SEC/Big 10 raids it to ashes? Until Congress tells me it's illegal to raid another conference, I'll wait until the whole thing shakes down.

Read the press announcement again.
The presidents specifically mention basketball as the driver.

“Earlier today, we voted unanimously to pursue an orderly evolution to a foundation of basketball schools that honors the history and tradition on which the Big East was established," the school presidents said in a statement Saturday afternoon. "Under the current context of conference realignment, we believe pursuing a new basketball framework that builds on this tradition of excellence and competition is the best way forward.

Guarantee you no football schools are in play.
Fox will have a major say, it's their money.

I know basketball will be the driver. But why turn down programs willing to behave themselves, especially if they are too outnumbered to make any football-related power plays? I don't think Cincy or UConn can be trusted, and I hope they rot in lower division hell. But if Temple and Memphis recognized that they are first and foremost basketball schools and parked football in the MAC, would the BE-7 turn that down? I think Temple/Xavier/Memphis is better than Xavier/Butler/St. Louis.

Agree, Fox will have a say and their input is important. They want success as much as these schools do. Their market analysis of which schools might be best fit will be based on a blueprint for league success which also lends itself to good exposure, recruiting etc. Thus far, it looks like things are being done the right way, with due diligence. The moves made now are what will make or break the future of this league. So far I like what I see.

I think the group of Xavier, St.. Louis and Butler has the potential to be just as good without the strings attached.

I agree totally! Cincy and Uconn "publicly" tried to get out of the Big East so Hasta la Vista muthafckers!
Memphis and Temple would be worthy basketball additions but as TIS pointed out this will be a BB conference first and foremost and they need football TV revenue to help their programs survive.

Their football programs are surviving on (I suspect) less revenue than they would get with the C7. This IMO is their best chance to succeed.

Plus that BE-7 revenue would be on top of whatever they earned from the MAC for football.

The below linked 23 minute video which highlights the big time commitment which St. Louis University has made to it's stated goal off winning a men's basketball national championship. SLU's commitment extends beyond mere dollars. SLU views winning athletics as a part of it's mission and understands how athletics brings it community together and promotes the image of the University.

I was formerly dismissive about SLU being included in the C7 but after watching the video I believe SLU would be a great addition.

My niece graduated from there. I have been to a game at the home arena. Its very impressive and they have a great fan base. They would be a fantastic addition as they share similar beliefs and athletic goals at the Big East 7. They will continue to pour big money to be successful.

I would only let in a school that plays football if they had no unilateral rights to leave. It can't be their decision to be able to leave. Even a $50mm exit fee is not big enough if one of the super football conferences come calling. The only way a football school should be allowed into our new conference is if they can not leave. I doubt any school would ever sign up for such an agreement, so it wouldn't happen. I'm fine with that.

If they would give up their rights to leave, I would let in a Cinci or Memphis or Temple into our conference, but I personally want Yukon out. We compete with them too much recruiting-wise in this region. We should use this advantage as much as can to try and snuff out their recruiting. Die yukon recruiting, die! Die! Die! Die! I want them to whither away.

The seven Catholic schools that plan to leave the Big East to form their own basketball conference expect to double their money off a television deal, according to sources.

Sources say that Fox, whose Fox Sports 1 channel is set to launch in August, has an initial high offer on the table of more than $500 million for a 12-year deal. Fox Sports 1 will replace the network's motorsports channel Speed, already in 81 million homes. Sources say officials with Fox are scheduled to meet with those representing the interest of the "Catholic 7" in New York City on Wednesday. A Fox spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment. A high-ranking source at NBC Sports Network, which has so far engaged in preliminary discussions with the "Catholic 7," declined comment. ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz also declined comment on the network's interest in the "Catholic 7" games.

The presidents of the schools -- DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, Seton Hall, St. John's and Villanova -- met in New York on Friday to discuss the intricacies of the new conference and announced that they retained the legal services of Proskauer Rose and Pilson Communications for television negotiations.

But the television deal is said to be far along. In fact, before the non-football schools left the Big East, sources say the presidents knew they'd be better off leaving. That's because Jordan Bazant, the main partner of New York-based The Legacy Agency, which represents Fox broadcasters including Troy Aikman, Chris Myers and Daryl "Moose" Johnston, already had helped bring Fox to the table. Representatives of St. John's and Georgetown took the lead in those early discussions.

Under the current Big East deal, which expires at the end of this season, the non-football schools receive between $2 million and $3 million from the television contract. There was initial fear the defections of recent football members would leave the non-football schools in a worse position.

It is believed the "Catholic 7" would divide its share of the television rights evenly and split the rest among what ideally will become the other three-to-five schools that it adds to form a 10- to 12-team conference. One source said it is likely the new schools wouldn't share the same amount as the "Catholic 7," which would allow the former Big East basketball schools to earn in the $5 million range. It's thought that free agent schools such as the ones in the Atlantic 10 would be fine with making less than half of that on an annual basis because they currently pull in $400,000 a year. However, under current conference bylaws, there's a required 27-month window in order not to owe exit fees.

In a perfect situation, the "Catholic 7" would be able to leave the Big East at the end of this season and bring in new members, which would allow its television contract to begin next season. Perhaps the promise of new money would allow it to pay fees to get out earlier.

I hope we stay at 10 teams.

I'd like home and homes with every team.

Also who knows. Maybe NBC or ESPN outbids fox.

The Holy 7 deserve more of the revenue since it's like starting a business. They took more risk and they deserve more reward.

But I'd be fine with a vesting period where the other additions become equal after several years

Neither Nebraska, Maryland or Rutgers are getting full B1G shares.
Same for WV in the Big 12.

I think this move by the Big 7 is the best thing that could happen and I hope they get to retain the Big East name

If league only goes to 10 it will likely be Xavier, Butler an either VCU or St. Louis I think. I still think we''ll go to 12. More teams generally a little bit more marketable. Will be interesting to see what happens.

While I agree, I hope we wait to go to 12. Put ourselves in a position to react to a changing landscape rather than just jumping the gun right off the bat. Who knows who becomes "available" in a few years. Maybe it would even bring about a renegotiation of rights?!?!

Unless something wacky happens, I think Dayton and VCU are the 11th and 12th teams.

I think that's what we'll see. Butler, Xavier and St. Louis immediately, then sitting on 10 teams for two seasons. If nothing radical happens, then like I just mentioned I think we "settle" for VCU and Dayton.
