Also is Boston College - the first to leave - happy?
"Really?"
Many of the other defections/defectors are headed for the same disappintment by running to a "football" conference.

Maybe an analogy is Benedict Arnold - was he ultimately happy?

We have enough to get on with a very successful, focused conference.

Boston College may be "lost" among the ACC fb schools and not the bb "power" they were in the BE but the will be getting $15-16 million a year under the new ACC media contract. I'd say they're happy.

Boston College being happy and Boston College fans being happy are two different things.
____________

Very true but the comment was about BC, not their fans.

10 teams makes for a great 18 game round robin season 30-40 teams would suck. The original BE worked because of the home and home's. I FEEL LIKE IT'S CHRISTMAS MORNING. Can't wait to see what we got!!!!

the big east worked because it was unique...AND it was when the best coaches didn't make alot of money. today, big conferences pay big bucks. small conferences look for successful assistants or low major coaches. that's a slippery slope. with divisions you WOULD have home and homes. that's the point of divisions.

anyway, it's a suggestion. none of us have any input.

If it's divisions you want just give us a 7 team division in the 21 team A10. But for me the 10 team BE sounds perfect.

mid major...which apparently is where we're headed. i should have thrown in the most important reason the early big east worked...espn. it was a start up network and the conference broadcast us nationally. we both became big time at the same time. those days of being the only game in town are over. xavier/georgetown home and homes aren't drawing squat.

From the above article:

Loser: UConn and Cincinnati

How bad does that make ya feel!!

How about endee?
Gotta be kicking themselves.

The new conference would have been tailor made for the Irish. No sharing football $ and keeping their huge NY alums base happy in the winter.
I hope Uconn and Cincy go to hell!

It's kinda nice that for once someone else is taken out back to the woodshed, isn't it?
It's pretty smug of me, but I accept myself for my faults :)

It sounds like ESPN is giving the Catholic League it's blessings!! Mid major I think not. This very well could be best case!

72, Tom, Redman -
I never liked the idea of giving Notre Dame the best of the conference while allowing them to be free football wise. Yes, I guess many or some believe they are be tter than thou.

I'm surprised th ACC went the same generous route.

I still believe - like Boston College - there will be mixed blessings for the Syracuse, Pittsburghs et al of the world.

all the best

Just saw the breaking news ticker on espn, I have a few questions though, well first is we all know seven isn't enough for a conference, so who de we get?

Speculation says Xavier near definite, likely Butler, and Dayton. We may raid a few other conferences such as the WCC for Gonzaga or CAA for George Mason. All rumors but Xavier seems to be the obvious one.

My point exactly. The new BE was endee's wet dream.

Have you seen the attendance figures for Xavier and Georgetown?
They dwarf ours.
As far as mid major, I'll put the new BE among the top 3 conferences in the country subject to adding the proper schools.

Guys how likely is Gonzaga to join up? It's widely reported that they want to leave the WCC...they have publicly said they want to join a major hoops conference. I know location hasn't mattered in the past...will it matter now? Take St. Mary's also as a traveling partner, add Xavier and Butler and suddenly we are right back in the mix for top 3 basketball conferences. If Memphis, Temple, UConn, and Cincy somehow find their way back to us, we are the clear #1 basketball conference.

Big East hoops schools can't dissolve league, sources told @espn. Can leave as group w/out paying exit fees, but must wait 27 months

Don't want this to be -- or perceived to be -- an exclusively Catholic conference. There are no positives to it, and potentially some negatives. (Strongly believe that sounding too religious-affiliated would be a turnoff to some kids or at least their families.) Also, prefer that we don't have West Coast teams like Gonzaga and St. Mary's. If we're stretching it geographically, would definitely prefer to have Memphis,if they can figure out a way to place their (mediocre) football program elsewhere. Memphis is traditionally a strong team with a great fan base, has a Top 5 class coming in, and gives us a recruiting foothold in that part of the country. Memphis, Xavier, Butler and two more schools (ideally another non-sectarian one like Richmond) would be ideal. (Of course, if UConn would make an iron-clad commitment to the new "Big East" basketball conference, I'd welcome them with open arms.)

If nothing else, these are exciting times. Great to see St. John's et al. taking a pro-active stance while we still have some clout. Will be very interesting to see how it plays out.
