All Realignment Talk Here

When the media(Michale Kaye etc.) et al. were putting St J down as being a "has been" unable to attract a coach or players, I often thought about Gonzaga - if some non-football Catholic schools etc. could win so could we - AND - I thought St J has more to offer witih history, MSG, the improved $$$ and facilities.

I'm pleased the way our program is going and would not mind a non-football conference - BUT I don't want a basketball only conference - let the teams play lacrosse and soccer etc. which most of these schools do quite well.

Sorry if I'm repeating what others have alerady quoted above.

all the best

I think what will be looked at when adding schools and moving forward is really operating budget for the sports programs. For our league to succeed, we need schools that can afford to spend on their basketball programs. Look at a school like Butler who has a tiny enrollment. Yes, they had been good for a few years, but are they sustainable after Brad Stevens

Butler has been around for awhile before Brad Stevens. They made two sweet 16s with Todd Lickliter. Plus, Brad Stevens already proved he isn't going anywhere and he's young.

I agree postell. People have questioned if SJU can keep Lavin around for the long haul. Let's face it, we would all love to see SJU have a Butler-type run of success. Having Butler on board would add a lot to a new conference.

I said this before, but i have to repeat myself. This is GREAT news. This can bring back the old Big East feel and this is our chance, and it CAN work. A new league with integrity , strong basketball tradition, STRONG coaches, and the addition of some equally strong programs ( Xavier, Butler, etc. ). Its important to only take a select few programs and not water it down again. Some keys to this working are maintaining the title "Big East", if not, i suggested the "Big North". Another key is the contract with MSG and ESPN, which im sure will both be interested in maintaining. Lastly, this will not work without the strong Coaching heads, who have a tough road ahead. These coaches need to be advocates of the new league and ambassadors also. They need to be respected coaches who can be pioneers for this new league. This CAN work, this WILL work. Steve Lavin is without doubt, the BEST man for the job. He has transformed the Johnnie culture into one of hope and excitement. I hope Coach Lav is up for this challenge, we are all counting on him. Let me repeat....this is good news.... in a fews years, we will look back on this and watch all the never ending mass confusion of programs transferring from conference to conference, and we will smile and love where we are. In Lav We Trust, and Go Johnnies !!!!!

When this happens I know everyone seems to want Memphis and Temple to come with us. The ARE basketball schools first but they do have to worry about placing their football teams. As great as their basketball programs are, I want no part of a conference with any programs with a D1 football team. No UConn, No Cincy, No Memphis, No Temple, No BYU. There are plenty of good basketball only schools to form a formidable conference.

One other thing, I'm sure in theory having Butler and VCU come along with us, but didn't they just pay exit fees from the Horizon and CAA to join the A10. I think they actually paid more to leave earlier that the original agreement.

Quote from Zags article:

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin said his school would move forward with or without the Big East.

“[Women's coach] Joe Tartamella and myself have had productive discussions with Father Harrington and Chris Monasch concerning the latest developments that have come to light with the BIG EAST Conference,” Lavin said in a statement. “We have shared our perspective with Fr. Harrington and Chris as St. John’s shapes its future basketball aspirations.

“St. John’s is uniquely positioned to be successful regardless of the conference realignment outcome. It is our belief that we have all the key ingredients to move forward as a basketball program.”

i think he meant w/o the name

I think the Catholics do want Temple, Memphis, Cincy, and UConn in the fold. They just got tired of being sodomized and finally made a power play. They can tell those four that they will invite entire Mountain West or MAC football to play under the Big East name (with the BCS bid as a bargaining chip.) At least that is my dream.

Houston et al. do not belong anywhere near the Big East name.

Here is where I would tell Uconn and Cincy to take a long dribble off a short baseline. They were looking to get out. They didn't care about the BE and the basketball schools, so why should we care about them now? They thought they were playing from a position of strength. They would claim it was not personal, just business.

Not to mention, these two universities were coached by two of the biggest pr*cks in the profession, in Calhoun and Huggins. They sold their souls to reach the college basketball heights.

I would say goodbye to Temple and Memphis as well. They have football, and will always think they are superior.

Now the basketball schools are finally making moves to ensure they keep their seat at the NCAA relevance table.. It's all about survival. Nothing personal (although I will let out a very evil laugh if Uconn and Cincy are reduced to minnow status).

The next time anyone in Storrs and Cincinnatti hears a knock on it's door, they should proceed with caution. It could be satan ready to collect on his vig.

My sentiments exactly!!

best case scenario...a merger between the big east seven...plus uconn and temple if they want to remain on board...less likely cincinnati and usf who may bolt anyway. AND the atlantic ten and conference USA.

that'll bring 36-40 teams. big east name...big east/atlantic, big east/midwest. big east/southwest/ big east south. play home and home in your division only. enough games outside division to allow games against teams in other conferences. BIG tournament in end with play in games at barclays and msg...with final eight at msg.

there are enough football teams to have a 14-16 team big east. yes, football is mid major which is what the conference is today.

mega conference generates mega interest and mega tv bucks. the alternative is a small "catholic" conference now with some outstanding teams. down the road, major college football money will pay for major college basketball coaches. that'll leave the small "catholic" conference with "up and coming" coaches like the norm roberts' of the world...and plenty of cinderella stories while the teams with balls dominate.

10 teams makes for a great 18 game round robin season 30-40 teams would suck. The original BE worked because of the home and home's. I FEEL LIKE IT'S CHRISTMAS MORNING. Can't wait to see what we got!!!!

I think it ends up being 12 with no teams west of St. Louis

Probably see Butler, Xavier, Dayton, St. Louis, and VCU

the big east worked because it was unique...AND it was when the best coaches didn't make alot of money. today, big conferences pay big bucks. small conferences look for successful assistants or low major coaches. that's a slippery slope. with divisions you WOULD have home and homes. that's the point of divisions.

anyway, it's a suggestion. none of us have any input.

If it's divisions you want just give us a 7 team division in the 21 team A10. But for me the 10 team BE sounds perfect.
