All Realignment Talk Here

CBS says the decision has been made, and the basketball schools will announce it within a week.

"The Big East's seven non-football-playing members have decided to separate from the league's football-playing members and would like to announce the decision within a week barring an unexpected change of plans, multiple sources within the conference told CBSSports.com on Thursday."

" But a source told CBSSports.com that those seven schools would target at least three and perhaps five basketball programs to join them, and that Xavier, Dayton, St. Louis, Creighton and Butler would be among the targets."

Pete Thamel of Sports Illustrated says the basketball only schools would make MORE in a new conference than we do now.

"The Big East basketball schools make about $1.6 million annually ($26 million divided among the 16 schools), but that number was tied to strong brand names like Syracuse, Louisville and Pittsburgh. Conversations with multiple consultants and television executives about the future of a 12-team Catholic conference have yielded a range of figures. The Big East schools could easily get their current financial number and likely get $2 million annually with a new deal. At the most optimistic ceiling, the teams could get $3 million per year, although that's considered Pollyannaish."

10 teams makes for a great 18 game round robin season 30-40 teams would suck. The original BE worked because of the home and home's. I FEEL LIKE IT'S CHRISTMAS MORNING. Can't wait to see what we got!!!!

the big east worked because it was unique...AND it was when the best coaches didn't make alot of money. today, big conferences pay big bucks. small conferences look for successful assistants or low major coaches. that's a slippery slope. with divisions you WOULD have home and homes. that's the point of divisions.

anyway, it's a suggestion. none of us have any input.

If it's divisions you want just give us a 7 team division in the 21 team A10. But for me the 10 team BE sounds perfect.

Question gentlemen; If we were to stay in the current set up we are looking at, as a basketball only school maybe 1.5 million a yea, correct? If we go into the "new Big East" with the 7 BE schools plus 3 -5 power basketball only schools (Butler ect..) is there a possibility we could end up with more per year in a payout from an ESPNor other network contract?

We will not (I hope) be "Basketball only" but include all our (non-football) sports such as lacrosse and soccer etc.

I think it would be terrific with the 7 plus a few others - and as we know there are a few other very good choices ala Xavier...

all the best

Also is Boston College - the first to leave - happy?
"Really?"
Many of the other defections/defectors are headed for the same disappintment by running to a "football" conference.

Maybe an analogy is Benedict Arnold - was he ultimately happy?

We have enough to get on with a very successful, focused conference.

I believe when we say “B'ball only” we make the assumption (uh oh) that the other sports follow because when we leave the BE the other sports need a home. I believe we are referring to Basketball centered vs. Football.

ESPN would not take a bball only conference IMHO. It's probably going to be NBC.

And a lot factors into the per school figures. We don't even know who those 3-5 additional schools will be.

A lot depends on who is brokering the deal on behalf of the new conference. If he can sell markets, up & coming coaches, getting seats filled, etc., they have a shot.

Why do you think that? They singed an 8 year deal with the West Coast conference just a year ago. The new Big East will have a lot more cache than than conference.

There's a lot of airtime to fill from November through March with no football, no NHL and limited NBA.

I read a report that said Paul Tagliabue, the former NFL commissioner, is the braintrust behind what the basketball schools are doing. And he was the one consulting the other school presidents and advising them. He's the chairman of the board of trustees at Georgetown, so it would makes sense.

Him and Tranghese could become players in terms of Commish.

I don't think there is any way that the basketball teams stay with the footbal schools at this point. I expect the announcement of a split will come in the next few days, or a week at most. No inside information on any of that, just reading the tea leaves as most have done, and already come to the same conclusion.

Karma is taking place even though this a Catholic School. And I heard Mike Rice got suspended for three games for his infamous outbursts.

Boston College may be "lost" among the ACC fb schools and not the bb "power" they were in the BE but the will be getting $15-16 million a year under the new ACC media contract. I'd say they're happy.

Boston College being happy and Boston College fans being happy are two different things.

______________

If the Atlantic-10 teams mentioned elect to join the BE St Louis and Xavier have very good men's soccer teams.

The Atlantic-10 does not, according to their website, sponser men's lacrosse only women's lacrosse. BE Lacrosse league would be down to SJ, Providence, Villanova and Georgetown. Either existing and/or new schools would have to start up lacrosse programs (translation: lacrosse league is mediocre at best) or the BE schools with lacrosse have to find another conference to play in or say bye-bye lacrosse.

Atlantic-10 schools also sponser field hockey, swimming and diving, indoor track and rowing - don't know if the BE sponsers those sports.
