All Realignment Talk Here

I really hope these rumors mean we are in the driver's seat and we form our own conference, get to keep our name, and cherry pick who WE want to come i.e. Xavier, Butler, etc. If that's the case, what a relief it would be. We would be secure for the first time in what 2 years?

I think what will be looked at when adding schools and moving forward is really operating budget for the sports programs. For our league to succeed, we need schools that can afford to spend on their basketball programs. Look at a school like Butler who has a tiny enrollment. Yes, they had been good for a few years, but are they sustainable after Brad Stevens?

Then you compare a school like VCU who has over 30k students enrolled and has already shown some bball prowess. A school like VCU has a much better chance at becoming a real player in the long run because of size and operating budget. Other schools with big fan bases like Dayton and Xavier are no brainers as well because they sell tickets and can afford to invest in their respective programs. We will need to be careful moving forward and adding teams that fit the picture of future success.

Honestly, if we do split, why not have some kind of contract with UConn where their football power is diminished? We obviously would love to have them for basketball. Also interesting to see some posters in the UConn forum say "Football was the biggest mistake we made". Crazy stuff guys.

It's easy. All they have to do is drop their football program to 1AA and we'll welcome them with open arms to our bball conference!! In addition, I think just to screw with the ACC, we should invite Duke. I know they won't be takers, but would be fun to just remind them that they are really a basketball school riding the coattails in a football conference!

Could you imagine if Duke and UNC jumped ship to the new basketball schools league? I would be hysterical laughing...maybe then the ACC can see what we went through.

I don't know if anyone read my posts from the past 30 hours but I predicted we'd dissolve the conference. I predicted the A10 isn't the answer. And lastly I predicted we'd go after Duke(and have a legitimate shot at them). The ACC will be the next conference to be derailed.

I can't get into specifics and I don't want to be cryptic but news should be out by the weekend. The CAA is already anticipating changes in terms of losses/additions that should be revealed by Saturday.

How hysterical will it be if we break off, keep the old friends of the original Big East together, then watch the ACC get raided? If it were a movie, I'd love to crack open an ice cold Corona, watch, and enjoy every second. I will be absolutely thrilled if we break off, keep the name, keep MSG, and add Xavier, Butler, etc.

Lots of people thought I was crazy when suggesting the old buddies would stick together, but that's what it looks like is happening. It's nice to see some solidarity for once especially from such great schools as Nova and Georgetown. Maybe for once money is not the end all be all, because we surely won't get close to the same deal we had as basketball only.

The CAA ?
That tells me 1) George mason will be in the new league
or 2) the CAA is anticipating a raid from the a-10, after they lose teams

I'd expect the latter. I know this wouldn't work, but I'd love to get Gonzaga, BYU, and St. Mary's with Xavier, Butler, etc. Just a pipe dream. Do you think UConn says screw football and tries to join with us as a basketball only? If so this conference will be completely healthy.

My favorite:

"With absolutely everything we've had going for us, to be in this position is shocking.

Very soon we'll be an all sports conference of:

UConn, Cincinnati, South Florida, Temple, Central Florida, Memphis, East Carolina, Tulane, Houston and SMU.

Where did it all go wrong? What could've been done differently? I just don't even know."

It's hysterical it really is. UConn is like that girl who left you because she thought she could do better, then she realizes you were the best she could get and begs you to take her back. Priceless quotes from UConn after trying their hardest to stab us in the back. Would still love to have them for basketball though.

I thought Gonzaga coming was crazy yesterday, but there was the blurb that they would consider it. And I think they do it if you make sure they aren't really lonely way out there -- I'd invite BYU definitely (they also have good women's sports), maybe St. Mary's.

Between the Gonzaga blurb and the Della cryptic message, it seems apparent to me that some high-level feelers have been sent out this week.

I think the Catholics do want Temple, Memphis, Cincy, and UConn in the fold. They just got tired of being sodomized and finally made a power play. They can tell those four that they will invite entire Mountain West or MAC football to play under the Big East name (with the BCS bid as a bargaining chip.) At least that is my dream.

Houston et al. do not belong anywhere near the Big East name.

If we can somehow swing Gonzaga, BYU, St. Mary's, Xavier, Butler, etc. and have UConn and Cincy come crawling to us I don't see how this isn't top to bottom the best basketball conference in America.

I agree, and someone will pay for the TV rights for that.

I don't want to get too excited just yet, but it does appear that someone with a clue about negotiating and leverage stepped up for the Catholics and took control. My money is on Marquette's AD.

Was just reading what Marquette said, and you have to admire them for having the balls to speak up and stop with the PC crap. Gonzaga actually said they would love to leave the WCC and join a national basketball conference to get them more exposure. Add to the mix Memphis and Temple on all of that already and ESPN is salivating.

Witt getting into the specifics, how do you feel about the changes you've heard about? You obviously know more than us. Just curious? I'm excited for a new frontier where we can get back to business to tell the truth.

George Mason very likely will be in the new league. They have an enrollment of almost 35,000 students. What does that mean? Big operating budget and solid basketball future. The new league likely will target VCU as well who also has a big enrollment, solid basketball as well as operating budget. These are some big schools with the potential to be a LOT better than they are now with better exposure, coaching, recruiting and a real conference affiliation.

I think we will see some teams added that many of us might not suspect. Mike I said, schools like Butler are good now because of Brad Stevens, but do they have the size and potential to pull their weight in the future? Moving forward we will have to identify possible basketball programs that could become perennial bball powers.

George Mason has over 30K enrollment, 10K seat arena and minutes from D.C. All a recipe for a good fit in the new league.

It will be interesting to see the domino effect. A couple of the schools encircle NYC but the really interesting part will be how the decisions affect the schools interested in changes to re-evaluate their current status.

A quote from Steve Lavin on Zagsblog:
St. John’s coach Steve Lavin said his school would move forward with or without the Big East.

“[Women's coach] Joe Tartamella and myself have had productive discussions with Father Harrington and Chris Monasch concerning the latest developments that have come to light with the BIG EAST Conference,” Lavin said in a statement. “We have shared our perspective with Fr. Harrington and Chris as St. John’s shapes its future basketball aspirations.

“St. John’s is uniquely positioned to be successful regardless of the conference realignment outcome. It is our belief that we have all the key ingredients to move forward as a basketball program.”

Some food for thought. Below are the Catholic 7 with their total enrollment. Next 3 are the slam dunk IMO. Then there is a pool of East of Mississippi option and finally west coast options in case Gonzaga might need a partner in crime. Again I think 12 is a good number to shoot at for a variety of reasons.
