All Realignment Talk Here

OK fellas, heres my opinion. First off, all this re-alignment has college sports in total CHAOS!!! If the President of the United States can step in and force a labor agreement with NFL officials, he can surely stabilize College Athletics. Something from someone needs to get a grasp on this. Secondly, teams that have defected to the ACC have not done well at all. Its obviously about the money, we all know that. We at St Johns should encourage to keep our priorities in check and establish a conference of Basketball only schools that emphasizes on HOOPS! We can build this conference to take pride in the tradition of HOOPS and ensure our recruits that our schools will not defect. The conference will be made up of basketball rich tradition schools, that schedule very tough non-conference games. Its like starting the Big East over again. When the league started, it quickly gained steam and recognition. I see the same for this possible conference. Again. the new conference will be Basketball only schools that will not defect. STABLE ,STRONG, HOOPS schools with strong coaches. This will work fellas. Some suggested schools are...St Johns, Georgetown, Villanova, Marquette, Seton Hall,Providence, DePaul, Xavier, Valparaiso, St. Louis, St. Josephs. I trulythink 10 schools is strong enough, but 12 would work too. FYI, to all these schools going to football conferences...only one school will be a BCS champ, there will be plenty of bottom feeders. I acutally think going to the ACC will hurt the like of Pitt, like it did to BC, Va Tech, and Miami. I think Rutgers will fare better though.

Drop Valpo, add Dayton.

Nova will never allow St. Joe's. Add Creighton, if you are going to add St. Louis.

Rutgers playing Ohio State, Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin, etc. in football is begging for failure. Wouldn't be surprised to see Rutgers consistently lose by 40 in the Big Ten save for a few teams.

Highly doubt Creighton or St. Louis will be consistent contenders. They have been for the past few years, but these teams are not recruiting studs or big time programs by any means. Those 2 teams would not be able to compete in a conference with SJ, Nova, G'Town, Providence, SH, etc. Valpo and Dayton are just like Creighton and St. Louis...good recently, but usually are no names. If we choose to stick with SJ, G'Town, Nova, DePaul, SH, Prov, Marquette, etc. we will not be considered a major threat. At best that's a 3 bid conference but more likely a 1 or 2 bid conference. G'Town and Nova will be good most of the time, Marquette is good, but all the other teams are not consistent. The only way an all basketball conference would be strong and capable is if SJ turns into Cincy and starts to consistently be ranked and go deep into tourney's. If that happens, you have 4 potential bids which is a solid conference. Too bad we can't get a Gonzaga and Xavier to join. That would make it SJ, G'Town, Nova, Temple, Memphis, Gonzaga, Xavier, Marquette, Prov, SH, etc. Now that would be a great basketball only conference. Easily 4-5 bids each year.

i think with the continued realignment, the acc is going to lose more schools...i saw one article that predicted that florida state and clemson will go to the big 12.....nc state and virginia tech to the sec.....and (a real stretch) that uva and unc will also move to the big 10.....

i would have laughed at all of this a few years ago but nothing surprises me anymore....

Is it really that out of our hands though? We can still at the very least call and talk to the ACC, maybe get Lavin on the phone and explain why we are a good fit and how we bring the big MSG stage and the real NYC market. If we start talking with G'Town and Nova about sticking together as 3 small but great basketball schools, we have more leverage. If we go mid major then we will never have hype again IMO. Lavin leaves, players transfer, and no more big recruits. Do you know how much money we would probably lose not being in a power conference? If it truly is about money, you would think our school would fight tooth and nail to make sure we don't become a mid major. It's complete BS that stupid football schools can force us to be a mid major in basketball after all these years. Laws must have been broken left and right. Why doesn't congress get involved and act as an arbitrator? There are immoral practices and backhanded deals going on here. I still have yet to hear a Big East official speak out truthfully and say how cowardly this whole thing is. We are literally sitting ducks in a pond with alligators encircling us. Can anyone come to our rescue or at least attempt to?

How is St. John's a good fit? They have been in 5 NCAA Tournaments since 1993. Their last actual win in an NCAA Tournament was 2000. We're "New York's team" yet are always outdrawn at MSG by rival teams. Has anybody gone to a Connecticut or Syracuse game lately? St. John's fans are usually outnumbered 3-1 on our own home court.

I love this school, but sometimes you have to look in the mirror. St. John's has been irrelevant in college basketball for a long time now. Yes, I'm excited by what Steve Lavin is doing and hope it continues. But until the team starts winning games (including Murray State and Baylor), we're just another one of those teams that are on the outside looking in.

STATEMENT OF BIG EAST COMMISSIONER MIKE ARESCO
REGARDING DEPARTURE OF RUTGERS UNIVERSITY

Although we are disappointed that Rutgers has decided to leave the Big East Conference, we wish them well. They have been a valued member of the Conference for many years.

We realize that conference realignment is currently a fact of life in college sports. In the context of this realignment, changes in our membership have been taking place, including important additions. In fact, the Big East has expanded its scope with new members in California, Texas, Florida, Idaho, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. As a result, the Big East has created a unique national football conference that is a factor in the BCS Championship, remains the nation’s strongest basketball conference top to bottom, and is a major force across the full spectrum of men’s and women’s college sports. We remain committed to, and confident in, the continued growth and vitality of the Big East Conference.

I hope he doesn't actually believe the garbage he's spewing

The biggest lie out of his mouth was that Rutgers has been a valued member for many years. They've only truly mattered since realignment began destroying us.

How are we a good fit? Well, for starters we actually are on the Atlantic Coast. We bring with us the NYC market which is #1 in the nation. If you are good, our media will have your back like no other. The ACC has some old school brethren like Cuse, Pitt, BC, etc. Our old rivalries are reborn instantly. We are a basketball first school, and the ACC is a basketball first conference. We are New York's team whether we go 0-32 or 32-0. Just because we aren't a Final Four team doesn't mean anything about our location. We remain the only major NYC basketball school. Keep in mind when Cuse fans outnumber us 3-1 at MSG, they have more than double the amount of students and a ton more alumni than we do. That will never change no matter how good we are. You can't compete with stark enrollment differences. We also have made Duke vs. SJ games very fun to watch over the years. We seem to give them a run for the money and even beat them a few times. Duke/Cuse/Pitt/UNC vs. SJ at MSG? Who wouldn't want that? We are a much better fit than you think. The ACC is basically the old Big East, so how do we suddenly not fit?

Reported that the ACC would be in serious jeopardy of losing their BCS qualifying status if Fla. St., Clemson and Va Tech bolt.

In Chicago, Herb Gould writes, “Not surprisingly, a platoon of Big Ten Network analysts applauded the Maryland acquisition.” KFAN-AM host Dan Barreiro tweeted, “Based on early reaction from Big 10 analysts, Delany trails only Gandhi, Mandela, MLK among visionaries.” However, Gould notes ESPN analysts were “not afraid to use their harpoons.” ESPN’s Bruce Pearl said, "I just don’t understand it. They talk about student-athlete welfare. How’s the road trip from Maryland to Nebraska going to be for the volleyball team or the fans who want to travel?” (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 11/20).

If FSU, Clemson, VT, and maybe even Miami all bolt, it no longer becomes a long shot of G'Town, UConn, Nova, SJ joining the ACC. The funny part is, our teams escaped the Big East to focus on football, now the big football schools want to leave and they will be right back where they started. Wish there was just a reset button to a few years ago. What a mess.
