I had to wait a couple of days before I commented on Tariq.

He is how I see it.
Tariq came here 3 years ago as a transfer because he was not getting any PT. We provided him a place to develop his game as he sits out and then in his 2nd playing year here plays more then 30 minutes a game and shows improvement. Now he wants to desert our program and his teammates. Next year is the year our team would have a great chance at a run in the NCAA Tournament. As a teammate I would be pissed. As a Coach I would say you want to go.. Go but the option to come back is off the table..

A kid transferring because of playing time or a coaching change is one thing, but kid being selfish and just looking for a big better deal and turning his back on his teammates. I don't want that kid at St John's..

Bye Tariq
Nice Red2395 and this certainly is frustrating - however the other consideration is...

Tariq is a young man, he is entitled to be unsure of a situation and explore options - haven't we all? (been unsure or ourselves and/or made changes)
AND no matter the outcome, it is best for us to wish him the best! Why not?
Perhaps not a stellar player - but he gave his all and more than once CM commended him as a deserving player.

So we can make this a win-win:
he stays and that helps us even if he does not start - or -
he leaves and as you and others have indicated we should have a better team next year even sans TO.
And either way we can be gracious and send him off with well wishes. Why not...

And so good luck Tariq with your plans and I hope the best for you - either here or at your next stop!

all the best.

He'll have to outplay a skinny top 100 PF for starter role, but he himself was a top 125-150 skinny big man, right? And TO has college experience over him. And the incoming frosh is from Maryland, so clearly wanted to stay home and likely won't throw a hissy fit and split if he comes off bench. I can easily see TO getting a Maryland offer and getting minutes.

Tariq Owens has received his release to transfer from St Johns, Im told after his father met with Chris Mullin yesterday. Just can’t transfer to a Big East school. Otherwise, no restrictions. #sjubb

His wish list doesn't matter. It matters if Maryland has TO on their list.

If MD had contact before today's release granted that would be violation.
They are losing some bigs and they had a freshman big who was pretty good. Maybe TO would rather take the sure thing than wait for us to recruit a big guy he can play next to. Not sure who their incoming recruits are.
Maryland has a top 15 McD AA PF coming in. Justin Jackson should also return next year as well (10 and 8 before he went down for season). Plus whoever they have coming back (Bruno Fernando possibly). They'll have less time than us in the frontcourt, and wayyy less shots for TO as well. Stranger things have happened.

Thanks. Haven't watched them play in I don't know how long, so my research was pretty quick and not in depth.

Losing Brooks was disappointing , I said that .Not Terrible was also said . What’s wrong with that ? This was a HS player who changed his verbally committed Obligations as quickly as his underwear . First ,USC and then us , then Washington . He never dribbled a Ball here noropened a book . He was a handshake that he revoked . Mullin didn’t withdraw his offer .Brooks shows why HS kids with Great potential are fawned over by Sneaker Companies and College Coaches . But, the days of Commitment that meant something are over . So , is losing a recruit who got whispered to by Hopkins in his home state , really a loss ? Sure he is a good player but, their are lots of good players out there. It’s getting the ones who seriously want to play here and be Coached by Mullin . I see Gerry McNamara and Eric Debendorf on the Orange sidelines . Former Boeheim players . Does sitting there on the Bench make then experienced enough for a HC gig somewhere ? His about watching Videos ? Administering a Budget already established by a more Senior University Official ? Hopkins sat on Boeheims bench for nearly a quarter Century , what does he offer that Mullin doesn’t ? Answer , nothing . Maybe Brooks wanted to stay close to home all along ? Why wasn’t he interested in Gonzaga or they him ? He could play for them as easily as Washington , unless he couldn’t get in Gonzaga or , maybe Few didn’t want him ? Who knows? A disappointment ? Yes ! A tragedy ? No !

Ok. So we recruit as if he's definitely gone.

Maryland has a 5 star PF coming in and the #38 ranked recruit coming in as a SF. Doesn’t seem like the smart choice to me. But as Paultzman said on JJ. Maybe his fathers feels he ll get a lot of shots as a SG, LOL.

That's a great little diatribe. Problem is he committed to USC, not Washington. After the initial stench of the sneaker scandal wore off I guess he decided to stick with his first instinct. Guess he liked Andy Enfield more than Mullin? Enfield should have been in the dance for the third straight year this year. So maybe he just likes winning? More than likely there are a wide range of reasons he considered but I bet distance from home was one of them.

Look he was just average at best. I WOULD NOT WANT HIM At POWER FORWARD spot,he does not have the ability to take fast 6-8 forward off the dribble and drive to the basket. He would get blown by talented forward.,I for one not losing any sleep over his departure ,this door closes and a better one opens I wish him good luck. We are talking like he was Kareem

Truth be told, if we get a competent grad transfer big, this is not a big loss, if we don’t, it is.

A situations like this always go our way. :)

The problem is that we already needed a big before he left. Now we need two.

And when it opens, will it look like Al Capone's vault?

Well think of it this way:

Tariq wasn't a one and done player. However he could be a one and done, two and done, and one and done player all in the same career.

If he ends up deciding his best decision is to return, I believe we and Mullins should welcome him back with open arms. There is no use trying to nitpick all of his faults until we trick ourselves into thinking losing him is no big deal.
