If this is a business decision, why not enter draft without an agent? Get some feedback, and then work on weaknesses.

Mulllin has given Tariq the green light and freedom to play some on the perimeter. If he went to another program would he have that freedom? We also run a lot of pick & roll which suits Tariq’s skill set. Not too mention getting 26 minutes a game in the BE.

My gut instinct this has to do more with the Dad. Who thinks his son needs to be more of a focal point on offense. He could possibly be trying to get Mullin to commit to Tariq being a top option on offense. They are supposed to get together this soon.
Don’t sense a positive outcome from that meeting if it even occurs.
That's unfortunate. I would think Tariq at least owes us a meeting. As for Muillin, the retention has to be better. Staff should be working day and night on bringing back the core 4.

Again, I am not defending Mullin here but let's remember HOW Tariq Owens became a starter. Had it not been for Marcus LoVett leaving the team, Tariq was a 6th or 7th man depending on the opponent. He was a great shot blocker and worked his butt off to improve his shooting so he was due for a possible big senior season if he gained some weight and improved his defense. His father seems to want to dictate his role to Mullin and Mullin, or any coach, that succumbs to such blackmail doesn't deserve to be coaching. Say what you want about Calipari or Bill Self but they have the cred to convince McDonald’s All-Americans to be a sixth or 7th man. Diallo at Kansas barely played and still got drafted. Owens should be worrying about the quality of his play instead of the quantity. Misguided to say the least.

Rooting for this outfit is just "death by a thousand cuts."
Bring back Nicola the Giant.

The dad’s post is ridiculous. We love St. John’s but this is a business decision? I’m sorry. He’s an improving 6’11” string bean who has no post game, a nice 15 foot side jumper, an ok rebounder and is foul prone. Problem is we don’t have much else, so it’s just impossible to deal with losing a rotation player right away. Unless we get Jordan Brown he won’t be easily replaced. The momentum, if there ever was any with Mullin being here, is slipping badly. I hate that we can’t develop a deep roster of talent before someone else leaves.

Tariq transferred here from Tennessee , where with Rick Barnes taking over , he wasn’t going to be in the mix . I think Mullin and Staff developed Tariq to the best extent possible . He has some skills , shooting 12 footers and blocking shots . He does not rebound , fouls way too much and has no post game or moves to the basket . His hands are better than Yakwe but, that’s not saying much . If he thinks he gets a better run elsewhere , good luck . His physicality is limited and he was outmuscled in the post by most BE players and could not handle the Delgados , Bullocks , Govans, Kanters , etc . I don’t think him opting for a 5 th year eligibility is a negative for Mullin . If the SCarolina transfer Diakite brings any Rebounding and Defense and front court muscle , we will be a better team . Owens was a nice player coming off the Bench who got a break in PT when Lovett dropped out . He should be thanking Mullin and Staff for giving him a terrific opportunity .

I think it's a huge loss. He's the tallest guy we have, and he's played a lot with our current guys. Short of Brown surprising us, someone needs to land us two grad transfer bigs who can actually play.

Of course he’s a loss. Only Clark and Keita are bigs w exp. The 2 bigs we recruited are not ranked that high. Can’t expect much from them next year. Hoping we can get a competent grad transfer and JUCO big.

If you're referencing Roberts and Earlington, "can't expect much from them next year" is an understatement. And let's face it, Earlington is not a big. We've got guards who are just as tall as he is.

Between Matt and Slice St. John's is paying a little south of 900K for two guys that were supposed to recruit us into an NCAA bid this year. That's more than what UMBC and Buffalo pay their head coaches combined. Our R.O.I. on coaches has been dismal.
As for next year, if this staff can't find any bigs that will contribute next year and keeps trying to plug holes in the dam with guards they are writing their epitaph. If we are relying on transfers and grad students next year it means we suck with local area high school talent which was the biggest criticism of Steve Lavin.
In the next few weeks "Show me the money".

Wonderful. It's bad enough that recruiting new talent has been difficult. Now the staff has to re-recruit the players they already brought here.

You are too obsessed with height. It's not the NBA. He's a 6'5" kid who more often than not will be on 6'7"/6'8" kids.
This one was not only surprising but also concerning. I am sorry but if we do not have continuity then we don't have a successful basketball team. A team of 2 star basketball players can have success if they stay together . This revolving door of transfer in and transfer out stuff is a poor way to build a roster and I feel like it has been happening for years. We have passed on our share of Desi Rodriguez type kids for the de commit, the transfer , the transgender 7 footer etc.. Recruit some hard nose city kids, play tough ball and win some games and the rest will take care of itself. Tariq Owens should not be looking to leave given the minutes he will get next year and the prospect ( hopefully) of a good season. Dig deeper on this one everyone. :(
+1

I would like to see Coach Mullin more involved in NYC recruiting. He said it.

April 1, 2015:

“The history here at St. John’s, we’ve always been strong in New York City, and I guarantee you’ll see me in public school gyms, the Catholic schools gym, the AAU gyms all over New York City,” the new St. John’s coach and legendary player said during his introductory press conference at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday afternoon.

“You don’t have to tell me where they are, I played in all of them. I know how to get in the back doors. If not, I know the janitors in the gyms, so I’m going to get there.”

When we landed all these transfers I flagged the problem that we burn a roster spot on them sitting on the bench and then have the risk they wouldn’t stick around for their senior years. It’s pretty a foregone conclusion that kids who graduate are going to transfer. It happened with Williams, will likely happen with Owens and could very well happen with Simon, Clark, Dixon and Keita. It’s just part of the current NCAA

Clark is not going anywhere this year. Even if we only get two years out of Simon, it was a terrific investment. And if Dixon and Keita are even close to as good as Simon and Clark, I will gladly enjoy watching them play for two years.

At this point spilt milk. Nuce kid, bug contributor, limited skill set, lower ceiling than his dad thinks.

Recruit recruit recruitrecruitrecruit.

I hear a lot about recruits have no experience but these kid have been playing ball since they can walk. Some have been in HS which had really good programs and good coaches. Lets distinguish good recruits ,very good recruits and game change recruits
The latter needs very little except learning plays and what the coach expects, these recruits are nearly NBA ready SO unfortunately we need one to turn the program around fast otherwise we have to grind it out and hope the in the very very good recruits there are sleepers and also that out coaching ,staffing improves to the pt retention of them is not an issue

Just thinking about how some players and their parents don't give NBA scouts enough credit. Whether the offense is running through you or not, they can pretty accurately asses your ability.

Just one big man off the top of my head is Stephen Zimmerman. This kid averaged 10 pts and 8 rebounds on a UNLV team that went nowhere. Yet he was drafted in the 2nd round based on, I would assume, the potential seen by scouts.

Point being, it's highly debatable whether Tariq's greener pasture will actually be greener, or if it will actually create more opportunity. As we know, it could back fire and turn out to be a worse situation. He won't know that until next year.

I'm kind of surprised with some posters maligning Matt and his recruiting efforts. I think he's done a great job. He's brought us some good talent. At least we're in the conversation with some decent players. It's on Mullin to have a program in place that is attractive to prospects. He needs to be a major part in recruiting players, and I don't know that he hasn't. Kids aren't coming here to play for Matt.
