Presumably Figueroa gets bumped from the Starting 5 if Heron is eligible . Essentially the Starters would be Ponds, Simon, Clarke , Keita and Heron , if he is eligible . Leaving Figueroa , Dixon, Trimble and the freshman coming in off the Bench . Just a side note to those who snipe at the transfers that have come here ... Figueroa , Heron will be huge upgrades over Owens and Yakwe . Losing Players because better players are coming in , is part of the game in College B.B. . It shouldn’t be a criticism of Mullin in losing either Owens or Yakwe at this point .. But, still expect the endless chatter to bemoan the loss of these 2 . It’s not a valid point any longer .
Again a strawman. LJ Figueroa was a JUCO transfer, that is not the same as a traditional transfer since he does not have to sit out a year. Heron is a special case because he may gain eligibility, but that is not a traditional transfer either.
And no one is complaining about either since both really saved what was CLEARLY an underwhelming recruiting class. This is when the staff should be scoring in recruiting.
Lastly the biggest complaint is the fact that Yakwe regressed so badly under this staff. Yes he was not that good when he left but that is the point so much more was expected of him. He was the MVP at Peach Jam and arguably along with Ponds the most celebrated recruit of this current staff.
I can see why you like to argue with yourself. It is very easy to invent your own arguments and then proceed to carefully present counter arguments.
I used to watch practices where Mullin and St. Jean would teach Yakwe how to fumble the ball when passed to him. They kept yelling "Manos de Piedra! Manos de Piedra". Yakwe was slow to catch on. At first he would say quizzically, "Roberto Duran?" until he finally caught on and could drop passes with ease. Then they worked on shooting bricks from 10 feet and in, missing layups, the works. finally they taught him how to lunge at desperation 3 point shooters to make sure he fouled them and making sure they still got off clean shots.
They yelled at him "Don't steal the ball!!! Stealing is bad" And his steals dropped from 17 as a frosh to 5 last season.
I don't know why they taught him that stuff. I mean he already knew how to clank foul shots. Wasn't that good enough for them? No they messed him up there to, and instead of getting FT % into the 40's, raised it to 71% as a junior.
Their chief complaint was that he spent too much time studying and not enough time cutting class.
Bottom line. Yakwe stunk it up for the last 2 seasons and didn't deserve to be on the court.
