21-22 Starting Lineup / Playing Time

Let’s face it, aside from Julian and Posh, nothing is given. We could see a ton of different  lineups and substitution patterns.

I'm thinking Champ gets all the minutes he deserves as long as he's productive.  Posh, I can see benefitting from being capped at 28-30.
I do wonder what we would look like if it's Pinzon running the team for those 10-12 minutes. Does style of play change completely?

On Defense I think we would see the bigger difference. But on O neither of them are really score first guys so I think the style of play could stay the same for the most part.

I think he is going to be really good Also his shot is not that bad and will get better. He has a great floater and IQ

I have not had the good fortune of watching Mathis play (or at least I didn’t have reason to pay close attention when I watched Rutgers). At least from what I’ve read, he sounds like  a player similar to Willie Glass, i.e., plays taller than his height, with the ability to be a basket-filler, but also not a great shooter or fundamentally sound player.  Is that a fair assessment??

Also, fwiw, I’m excited to see Omar Stanley. Obviously way too early, but players fitting his description of having high-motors, being “junkyard dogs” and being unselfish team players have done well here and were fan favorites.  Tyrone Grant and Charles Mineland are just a couple who come to mind.

Mathis is absolutely fundamentally sound.  He is a fantastic defender as well which is extremely important.  His outside shooting choices at times can be streaky, but he can also get hot.  I think he’s just tried to do too much in the past, especially in teams that were more half court style teams.  He’s quite talented and a big guard overall.  He just has to reign it in a bit, but also has the ability to sink teams and have monster games.

He had 25/7 against Purdue this season.  19/7 against Cuse,  15 against Illinois, 16 against Ohio State.  All tourney teams.  He also scored double digits in 8/9 of the games he started in the first half of the season.  Hes also
the best defender of the bunch.

Id bet a lot of money that if we played Rutgers or Purdue last season no one on this board would have been worried in the least bit about how our team would handle Mathis or Wheeler. Now they are our guys and everyone is hoping we get the best version possible of them. It never works like that.

Mathis was Rutgers leading scorer for first half of the season.  You can bet we would have worried how to deal with him if we played against him jn the first half.  His production only dropped when they cut his minutes in favor of more half-court type guys.

It's sort of like the Yankee fans of the 80s, expecting mediocre free agent signings (IE Ed Whitson) to become all stars just because they joined the Yankees. Same with every kid we get here. There's a name for that. I believe it's called "Toroette's Syndrome".

They are both supporting role players, that is what they were for their prior teams and what they will be for us. Don't recall anyone calling them featured players for their teams or projecting them to be such for us. Featured players are the only type players anyone "worries" about heading into a game and for us that would be JC and possibly Posh for his all around game.
PS except maybe for MCNPA LOL

So you're basically calling Champ and Posh our only A Listers?

Mathis was Rutgers leading scorer for first half of the season.

No he was not and no matter how many times you want to say it it will not make it true.

Through 14 games last season (half of Rutgers season) Mathis was 3rd on the team in scoring. That’s not anything to sneeze at. Im not trying to disparage him as a player I'm just trying to keep his expectations realistic.
-Mathis Averaged 11.3, Harper 17.6 and Young 14.6. -

Did you have any belief last year before the season that Cole would be someone who isn’t effective vs BE teams? Or were you talking him up as a big time scorer? Then when he isn’t a big time scorer he becomes dogshit cause everyone thought he could be penciled in for 12 or so points a game. You talk about Mathis like he is a can’t miss prospect. We have 3 full seasons to see he is not that. Again, I hope he equals what Williams brought last year. I’d be happy with that but I’m not expecting it as a 100% sure fire thing. In fact I’d be surprised.

Think they are being expected by most on here to be more than supporting role players. Perhaps that’s just semantics. But I know the large majority expects them to be better players here than they were at their last spot. Even still, some of the things I hear surprise me. A poll I posted on Twitter had Wheeler as the most likely candidate to be our 3rd leading scorer (111 votes and he got 57%). That’s a guy who in his 3 years at Purdue has scored 12 or more points ONCE in his career.

Now I think He can be a really good player for us even if he never scores 10 points in a game. Those aren’t mutually exclusive to me but I doubt most would feel the same.

Had the opportunity to talk with wheelers dad at golf outing...the kid is from good stock...likes to run...and is back home in Queens....cant wait to see him and our other big play...Go St. JOHNS

I'd expect Stef Smith to be our 3rd leading scorer but definitely think Wheeler can be a very good all around player for us and will likely play more than 20 mpg; seems like he was a fish out of water at Purdue.

Ok, just for fun, now that we have varying opinions on the starting five, let’s predict something easier, I.e., each player’s average ppg:

-Champagnie:  18.
-Posh: 12
-Mathis: 9
-Smith: 8
- Coburn:  8
- Wusu: 7
-Soriano: 6.5
- Wheeler: 6
- Pinzon: 4
- Stanley - 2
- Traore: .08
- Nyiwe: .08

I could see Champagnie averaging a couple of points less, and Posh averaging a couple of points more.  With that said, given this team’s composition of players, it’s very hard to predict what we will see with everyone else. I think that Mathis is the only one who has shown that he can score in double digits regularly against high-major competition, although Smith and Coburn have done it regularly against mid-majors.  Also, I would expect significant contributions from both Soriano and Wheeler — just not with scoring (although likely sufficient to keep defenses honest).

Mase, you can’t compare Cole to Mathis. Mathis has played in the Big 10 which is a better league than the Big East was last season and he was the third leading scorer on his team for the first 14 games. Cole on the other hand had never played against this level of competition previously. I am much more confident in what we will get out of Mathis than I was with Cole. I don’t believe he will be a star, but in this system I am confident based on his past performance against the highest level of competition that he will be better than Vince Cole.

Agree and I wasn’t comparing them as players.
