21-22 Starting Lineup / Playing Time

I'm with Making Plays on this Champ 4 versus 3 issue. Think it's been a bit overblown. Many college teams play 3 guard lineups and seems like that has always been CMA's preference. Champ last year was forced to often play post defense and that doesn't allow him to show he can guard wings at the pro level. That shouldn't happen at aIl this year. However, I do think there will be lots of times where he will be on the floor with one of Soriano, Wheeler or Stanley and three of Posh, Smith, Coburn, Mathis, Wusu or Pinzon. In those lineups he might technically be considered the 4, but doubt he will have a problem with it.

I didn't say he came back to play the 4. I know he wants to play the 3. I just think the team is better with him at the 4. Good luck if he thinks he can play at the next level at the 3.

If the scouts at the NBA thought he would be a better 4 then 3, they would tell him to play that position.

I remember watching Smith vs sju when with Vermont...I think he was their leading scorer...factor in 5th yr senior....I think he should start or get huge minutes....

I agree with those high on Steph Smith.  He is a savvy, polished upperclassman that can shoot, pass and handle the ball.  Likely to be a valuable piece.

As a show of confidence, I have retired my Greg William Jr. avatar.  /media/kunena/emoticons/wink.png

My gut tells me it will be Smith or Coburn over Mathis. I'm not sold on Mathis after last year losing the starting job and he can't hit the 3 to save his life 28% the past 3 years.

I was not a fan of the Mathis pick-up either, but he will definitely contribute.  Having a personal connection to the Harper family, I watched my share of Rutgers.  He will bring defensive intensity and can finish well on the fast break.  He does have an unorthodox floater that he will shoot in the paint and approaching the rim on the baseline.  It can at times be effective and at times make you pull your hair out.   He is not a good three point shooter, but he will take them and occasionally gets warm.

I am curious to see if he brings more rebounding under CMA.  He is extremely athletic with a strong motor.  He's listed at just 6'4", but I always thought he could crash the boards a little more.  Only time will tell.

They definitely saw something in him. But lately I've been wondering if what they saw was a guy who'd be willing to be a small-ball four in addition to his natural position.

I'm really curious to see how minutes will be distributed. All we know for certain is Posh and Champagnie will be getting 30-35 mins each. Beyond that, we have so much depth, and I'm just not sure how there are enough minutes to go around. Good problem to have for sure.

It is rare that CMA plays anyone 30 minutes, even Bobby Portis.  In his style of play, he will play 10 guys double digits.  By playing Posh and Champ less than last year, they will be more effective than last year say 28-30 for current season.

I really hope Posh and Champagne do not play 30 minutes a game or more other than the odd occasion. As we have seen no one plays harder than Posh and his physical style leads to injuries. With depth in fifth year seniors Smith and Coburn there is no reason to push Julian to the limit. If each of Posh and Julian can play hard 26-28 minutes a game we will be a better team this season and next.

I think we may end up seeing Coburn start at the 2. With Posh, Julian, Wheeler and Soriano. Coburn would make a lot of sense given his ability to hit a 3 in order to stretch the floor with Posh and Julian. Especially since you have size and a real center with Soriano. Wheeler can stay in the 10-15 foot range as well if he has a jumper worth anything.

Stef Smith is the first guy off the bench to spell Posh and Coburn, followed by Wusu, Mathis, and Pinzon.

Stanley would spell Wheeler and then you get a small allotment of minutes to Nyiwe no more than 6-7 a game I assume. I doubt we see much or Traore this year.

Coach will probably utilize a variety of different lineups and minutes played this season based on players health of course, the opposition, big or quick and a factor that hasn’t been a part of SJU basketball very often, how players practice.
Practices this season will be very competitive this season because the talent level between the first five and the second five     will not be that significant for the first time in years at SJU. This should result in player improvement all season and Anderson seems to be the type of coach who will demand hard practices and reward players with playing time who practice hard.

Well I don't disagree, but these kids want to play, and I'm not sure how you keep them out. Keep in mind, last year Champagnie averaged 32.9 minutes, and Posh averaged 31 minutes. Just hope they will accept playing less minutes and buying into the team mentality, which I don't think should be an issue.

Not so sure about Soriano, all depends how he runs .Coaches teams run a lot therefore he will be utilized against big  opponents  Perhaps the wt loss  will make him fit into coaches system .We will see

Agree.  He’s definitely not a 40-minute guy in Anderson’s system and he doesn’t need to be.  I see Soriano as a 16-18 minute a game guy depending on opponent.  That said, he’s capable of rebounding, scoring in the post at a good clip.  I don’t think we want him being in full time
anyway.  We wanna run and will go with smaller lineups plenty.  Nywie and Stanley will also get time there because they’re super mobile.

Mathis is a prime timer in this system.  He’s a fantastic athlete , strong and an excellent defender.  He’s not as bad an outside shooter as people think either.  He just needs to choose right shots.  He dropped 25 vs Purdue with 5/5 from 3 last season.  Mathis and Stef will hit the court before Coburn imo, more talented.  Pinzon will play 3 different spots.  We will
mix and match a lot.   We have the luxury of having 3 guys in Mathis, smith and coburn at SG that are experienced and all talented scorers in different ways.

I'm thinking Champ gets all the minutes he deserves as long as he's productive.  Posh, I can see benefitting from being capped at 28-30.
