I just randomly saw the #22 googling our next game and I got goosebumps.Johnnies ranked #22! Wow, wasn't expecting that movement.
First ranking since January 2019, and before then 2015. Still have to prove we deserve it, but some massive opportunities to these next few weeks. Hopefully this helps attendance some at MSG this weekend.
It does for marketing and ticket sales…the latter helps on the court.Rankings don't matter at all. And yet I am happy that we are ranked.
It's been too damn long, this feels great. For those who scoff at being ranked this early, come to appreciate this -
From December 4, 2001 to February 21, 2011 there were 10 full years without being ranked.
Dating back to 2001 there are 10 weeks total that we've been ranked in the AP:
01/07/19- (#24)
Winter of 2015- 5 weeks (#24, #20, #17, #15, #24)
Winter of 2011- 4 weeks (#23, #15, #17, #18)
NOT GREATSJU currently has a 5 game losing streak when ranked. The last win was on Dec. 28, 2014. as #17 SJU beat Tulane at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
That was an absolute drubbing if I recall correctlySJU currently has a 5 game losing streak when ranked. The last win was on Dec. 28, 2014. as #17 SJU beat Tulane at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
While I understand where you're coming from, I hate this. You know more than me, this program has not had much to celebrate, ESPECIALLY in the last 25 years, so why would your first feelings about being ranked this early in the season be "hold my applause." If anything it should be the opposite, you can't take this positive momentum for granted. Sure, is it all for nothing if they lose the next 5 games of course, but this is a big deal for optics, and relevancy. Something this program has been more than struggling with for a long time.Don't get me wrong, it's very nice to see us ranked once again. But, let's bring the temperature down a bit. We beat Fordham and Quinnipiac, two of the weaker teams on our schedule. If we fare well in the next couple of weeks (against New Mexico, in the Bahamas and Georgia), I'll get excited. Until then, it's wait and see for me. I've been a St John's fan for 60 years. I've gotten on board the train too early too many times in the past only to be disappointed. Yes, this team has talent, excellent coaching and a lot of potential. But, until we start beating some good teams, I'm going to hold my applause.
