2024-25 Rankings

Don't shoot the messenger.
Key points about NET rankings:
  • Full name: NCAA Evaluation Tool

  • Importance in March: As the NCAA tournament nears, the NET ranking becomes increasingly important for determining which teams make the tournament and where they are seeded.

  • Factors considered: NET takes into account not just wins and losses but also strength of schedule, game location, and offensive/defensive efficiency.

"More come March" refers to a team's NET ranking being more important than their overall ranking as the NCAA basketball tournament approaches in March, as the NET ranking is the primary metric used by the selection committee to determine tournament seeding and is considered a more accurate measure of a team's strength based on their schedule and quality of wins compared to a simple ranking.
Not shooting the messenger, just saying as we all know, it didn't mean a damn thing last year.
Look at shu last year, did they even make it? Nope, so I don't even care about NET.
If you want to care about it, then that's your right.

Only that I care about is being ranked at the end of the year and we'll get in.

No, being ranked in March in college basketball does not guarantee a bid to the NCAA tournament, as the selection committee considers a variety of factors beyond just rankings when deciding on at-large bids, including strength of schedule, win-loss record, and performance in conference tournaments; while a high ranking in March significantly increases the chances of a bid, it is not a guaranteed spot.

I think we were close as you mention and what was really bizarre is I recall we finished 5h, right behind Seton Hall, who also got passed over.
Tom, how many ranked teams at the end of the season historically have not made the NCAA Tournament? There have only been four instances in the history of the NCAA Tournament that a ranked team was left out and they were never from a power conference. UNLV 1992-93, Utah St 2003-04 , SMU 2013-14 and most recently St. Mary’s in 2017-18. If you’re ranked you’re making the tournament. I don’t care what the metrics say , if we’re ranked they’re not keeping us out. The ranking means something.

The ranking means something. Not anymore. We're 12th on kenpom.com after tonight, up a spot.

Last week there were 62 AP ballots cast. St. John's received 50 points while #25 Clemson received 175. A lot of teams toward the end of the Top 25 lost (including Clemson), so let's say tomorrow the #25 team will receive 150 points.

That means we'd need an additional 100 points tomorrow, or nearly 2 spot increases per AP ballot on average (for example, if a ballot had us #18 last week then this week we'd need to be #16).

So far only one AP ballot is online:

Borges has us at #16, while last week he had us at #23. In other words that's an additional 7 points this week from one ballot (putting us at 57). Small sample, but that's honestly a pretty incredible jump. It also speaks to how poorly the end of the Top 25 did.

Still need to see more ballots, but there's a solid chance we'll be ranked for Christmas.
