2024/2025 Roster

Rick giveth (Co-captain) and Rick taketh away (starting). It's tough playing for God.

Definitely trying to light a fire under Zuby for thinking differently about what's important.

Remember Tariq Owen's dad? He would go on and on about how Tariq deserved more shots and more points. Renard sells cars or something like that. He transfers to a better team and instead of given license to shoot more from the perimeter, is told to rebound, defend, block shots and shoot less from outside. His team goes to the Finals but his stat line almost the same.

Joe Lapchick schooled Bobby Knight about coaching. He asked Knight, "Do you know what the most important rule is?" He then told him, "The nost important rule is there are no rules. Each kid is different and you have have to treat them differently"

So he coddles Sim and Brady but right now Zuby needs a little threat and kick in the ass after a 29 pt 13 reb game that prob went to his head a little. Rick needs Zuby to be a monster rebounder, a defender, a rim protector FIRST. If he scores, great. But if he doesn't do the primary things, well, he may sit a little till he does.
Renard bought houses...he didn't sell cars. Lived money and planned to retire in 5 years he was also a dream chaser (all per his Twitter bio). That was more than 5 years ago. Hope his dreams came true 🤣

The main point isn't whether Tariq made a good move (he did, obviously). The point is that Owens transferred in the belief that he would become more involved in the offense, socore a bunch of points, and showcase himself as an NBA draft pick. Turns out Tariq is just another guy toiling away professionally far from the show. Nothing to be ashamed of, of course. But when utilized properly, Owens helped propel Texas Tech to the championship game.

Rick knows what it takes to win in college, and a big who isn't snaring close to double digit rebounds on average and providing significant interior defense, is a liability even when providing offense.

Zuby is very coachable, and a great kid from a great family. Let’s see how he responds to the challenge Rick has laid down.
I wonder whether the Maker/redshirt is a permanent decision. Is he serviceable enough to give us 10-15 minutes in five minute spurts to help inside.

Playing for Pitino, players are always challenged to do better. He'll use different methods to get his guys to contribute the way he wants them to. Ruby will be fine when he trusts his skills and stops overthinking.

Don’t need him this year. If maker is ok with redshirt, I think it’s better for him & team.
He gets to learn from pitino & practice against 3 big East level centers.

If he grows into job (& puts on some lbs), he’ll play next season .
With state of todays transfer rules, I doubt all 4 here next year.

Reviewing some national stats, look how much room there is for improvement -

Turnovers (13) - 241st
3P % (33%) - 188th
FT % (70%) - 181st

Obviously early sample size but once the offense tightens up to compliment the elite D good lord watch out.

We’ve also gotten lucky with our opponents FT shooting. 62% so far and bound to go way up.

Magoon Gwath, 7 foot redshirt freshman for San Diego State, looks great. Could give us a look at what we have next year with Maker. I don’t think he was top 100.

Kudos to staff for 24 portal haul. Beyond obvious individual talent, the two guards value passing and Scott does those little things that wins games. Thus, collectively this trio makes the team better and dangerous. When Kadary gets in full shape to better fit with Rick’s uptempo, energy sapping style, watch out. Lastly our D and rebounding is a ton better with these physical additions.

Not trying to think too up field, but not going for any freshmen tells me they're going to be prioritizing retention this coming Spring. It would be something if we can get everyone back. Such an advantage already early on
With every "Top100" signing i see on X... i am reminded that we are completely ignoring the class of 25...

We brought in 6 freshmen from '23 /'24.... so we do have players in our system that are being developed- 2/3 of which will be significant contributors this year... one can hope we retain all 6.

Kadary/Scott - gone.
Smith - not sure his story... but he is the kind of player that stands to make more in College than pros next year (if he has 1 more)
RJ - gonna be tough to convince him to stay... if he only just maintains the play/effort we have seen in 4 games... let alone Improves*... he will be on a lot of Draft radars come March....

gonna have to reel in some big fish from the Portal this season....

Yeah competing with the pros is different than competing with the rest of the portal. In RJs case it might be the former.
