2023-24 Roster

Agreed Mase but I still expect Pitino to put a team together that will at least make NCAA Tournament next season.
I would be disappointed if we don’t make it in each of first 2 years. But great, established programs miss the tourney from time to time. The only thing I want is to be excited to watch St. John’s play basketball and to have hope to compete for tourney bid next year, not expect it as a guarantee.

If the team we walk out with in game 1 ends up having no chance to compete night in, night out of the BE then I’ll be disappointed.

With that said other teams gave Posh a lot of space to shoot. It wasn’t a case that he didn’t have open looks.
Posh is not a good shooter and he likely never will be. But I believe he’s a much better shooter than what he showed most of last year. His stroke looked good during the exhibition and he actually shot the ball better the last few games with Curbelo out. His sophomore year he showed glimpses of a respectable mod-range game.

If he loses a little weight, gets his head on right and is part of a well-coaches system there’s no reason to think he won’t be very effective
I would love to see you and Makingplays going at it in an octagon in an MMA style combat over your polar opposite, but steadfast opinions about Anderson.

I know if one of you get the upper hand in the topic of roster makeup, it will be like being locked into an arm bar.
They are polar opposites in the substance of their opinions but quite alike in how far their opinions diverge from reality.

Well, Pitino agrees with my opinion on Posh so I guess he is diverged from reality as well.

Brandon Gardner is an exceptionally likeable kid. He attended virtually every sju home game, on on days CTK played where he would rush to CA straight from his own games. The first time I was introduced to him he flashed a big smile and when i put out my hand to shake his, he opened his arms wide and hugged me. He said he couldn't wait to play here. His mom's first question during recruiting when our team wasn't doing well was "Is coach Anderson going to be here ?" Both mom and son liked Anderson and staff a lot and he already made a lot of friends on the team.

I'd accept her statement that it's not about NIL. The important reasons for him that influenced his decision are gone. I wish him well because he appears to be a great kid, but sad to see him go.
Good post

Something ive been thinking about, now even more so with Gardner de-commiting. In the world of free transfers which is essentially free agency, do coaches who expect to contend on a yearly basis even want to bring in and spend time developing freshman who won't necessarily contribute immediately? They can just get guys who've already been developed out of the portal.

I feel like we are already compromising our expectations. Pitino promised immediate results. I’m not expecting a national championship or a big east title next year but I’ll be very disappointed if we don’t dance next year and don’t finish in the top four of the conference the following year. Pitino has five years here best case scenario. If we don’t continue to generate momentum with immediate positive results the job will get more difficult.

Disclaimer
Whatever the roster next year it will be the best coached ST John’s team ever.
That disclaimer was brought to you by the Pitino is great and everything will be ok foundation.
With that out of the way I think a potential issue that no one has brought up is Rick hasn’t had to recruit in a major conference in what 5 or 6 years? Times have changed in that regard. I just don’t buy the concept that even the greatest coach can piece together an entire roster of mid level talent from the portal and succeed in the BE.
And to correct some this is not second guessing, this is questioning in real time.
Once the season starts however I am going to root for the team same as always and root for my favorite coach. Unlike those of you who are blindly rubber stamping everything before the season only to turn the minute things go sideways.
LW, first thank you for taking the heat of me and becoming the pariah! And to think you even like Pitino and are just advocating temperance when it comes to expectations.

I, on the other hand, am even more cynical. I see three players that will be contributors to brand name teams (Posh, Storr, and Gardner) that were asked to stay say, no thank you, I'd rather seek pastures greener. (red flag)

I see our direct competitors already making splashes in recruiting, Gtown, Xavier, Creighton already picking up big pieces and even Kim English has gotten his old commits to re-commit to him in a timely fashion. (red flag)

I see a roster with 3 players. (red flag).

I think it's okay to ask questions especially of a guy who was the highest paid coach in the big east before Ed Cooley nosed him at the line.

Now, I realize we are still St. John's and the Dickenson's, Abmas's, and Timberlake's of the world were just a shot in the dark, but it is telling that Clayton didn't pop for him immediately. It's also telling that suddenly the door seems open to 2 if not 3 Iona players.

Listen, I have no doubt he will fill a roster. And I have no doubt that Joel S will be a star again this coming year.

But if we are going to really compete for the top half of the big east. Iona South is not going to cut it. Clayton (if he comes) as to be a contributor not the primary. UConn is stacked and the talent coming in has to be a top 2 recruiting class. Xavier and Creighton are loaded too and added big pieces in the portal already. Marquette still has the Big East Player of Year. It's going to be awful tough to crack that top 4. Nova, Providence, and Hall are lead by the young and hungry and you better believe Ed Cooley isn't going to let G'town be a doormat any more. Butler and DePaul may also be doing something, there is no way to tell.

Well it's the off season, hope springs eternal! wheee!

I guess just speak for yourself

Bingo. Especially since you are just developing them for someone else.

Exactly! This why RP tweeted that Portal was the way forward - while still at Iona

Yup, and some coaches have even come out and said this. They are focusing much less on HS and prep players and switching to transfer portal as their main focus. Chances are that HS recruit is going to transfer out anyway so why focus on them when you can get a more developed player for the same amount of years.

Look at the blue bloods, they never really focused on transfers for recruiting because they had to sit out a year and could get 5 stars immediately. Now you see them all recruiting transfers heavily.

Although the waiver stuff appears to be bullshit, it also makes sense to get a transfer who can’t (on paper) transfer just as easily again.

It does seem like the board is moving the goal post from sweet sixteen to ‘maybe in the tournament’ and recruiting level from the likes of Caleb Love and Nick Timberlake to Daniss Jenkins. Heck Madison Square Gardner once praised for his loyalty to St John’s now is persona non grata because he has a mom with a social media presence.

Speaking for myself, you got me. I have lowered my expectations. I originally expected a final four next year, but I will settle for a sweet 16.
