2023-24 Roster

I was hoping for 6-8 returning players including recruits. Looks like we'll wind up with 3. Not ideal, but also no big deal. Look at what happened at Marquette when Smart took over for Wojo, pretty much the same thing that's happened to us. Smart had to re-stock the entire roster with the exception of a few holdovers. And guess what? Marquette went from a 9th place finish to a 5th place finish. Smart is a very good coach. Pitino is a great coach. We'll be fine.

Amen. Drissa and Joel are lucky. I would have been ok with everyone of them sent packing.
I would love to see you and Makingplays going at it in an octagon in an MMA style combat over your polar opposite, but steadfast opinions about Anderson.

I know if one of you get the upper hand in the topic of roster makeup, it will be like being locked into an arm bar.

From Zach, Brandon G' s mom spins it:

Brandon Gardner's mom tells me: 'I'd like to stop the noise before it starts. NIL - it could never be over something my son is entitled to. Brandon Gardner was patient. He listened. He met with the coaching staff and respected everyone's vision during this process, and my son is the captain of his ship.

More:

"It's unfair to place any scrutiny on my son over NIL. My son wants to play at a school where he feels he can play, grow and build an exceptional IQ. Coach Pitino will build his own team. Whether he wanted my son or not is irrelevant. He's building his team, his way. It's important for my son to work off of his instincts and prayers/signs. If it was about NIL. Brandon wouldn't have committed to St. John's."
Brandon Gardner is an exceptionally likeable kid. He attended virtually every sju home game, on on days CTK played where he would rush to CA straight from his own games. The first time I was introduced to him he flashed a big smile and when i put out my hand to shake his, he opened his arms wide and hugged me. He said he couldn't wait to play here. His mom's first question during recruiting when our team wasn't doing well was "Is coach Anderson going to be here ?" Both mom and son liked Anderson and staff a lot and he already made a lot of friends on the team.

I'd accept her statement that it's not about NIL. The important reasons for him that influenced his decision are gone. I wish him well because he appears to be a great kid, but sad to see him go.

To add, and who knows what’s 100%true, but what she says about her son “would be at SJU if NiL was the only factor” (paraphrasing), I took it as a good sign. We won’t be “out bid” when it comes to that.

Don’t understand the “allow St. John’s to re-recruit him” comment? Something duplicitous about this comment to me.

Clayton & Jenkins are 2 players right, si I'll be good then.
I don't expect either to commit this weekend. Clayton will want to mull things over with his family as it’s between us and a school from his home state.

Jenkins will have to consider what his role will be and whether it would be better to go somewhere else for more PT or try his luck overseas.

(I meant to reply earlier but got sidetracked and realize this might not age well.)

Not saying he is not a great kid, but there comes a point where a parent being overbearing in the process is road not need traveled in my opinion

Sometimes the juice is not worth the squeeze.

If it is a generational talent like Lamelo Ball yes. if it is Gardner I have no problem passing.
.

Whatever the roster next year it will be the best coached ST John’s team ever.
That disclaimer was brought to you by the Pitino is great and everything will be ok foundation.
With that out of the way I think a potential issue that no one has brought up is Rick hasn’t had to recruit in a major conference in what 5 or 6 years? Times have changed in that regard. I just don’t buy the concept that even the greatest coach can piece together an entire roster of mid level talent from the portal and succeed in the BE.
And to correct some this is not second guessing, this is questioning in real time.
Once the season starts however I am going to root for the team same as always and root for my favorite coach. Unlike those of you who are blindly rubber stamping everything before the season only to turn the minute things go sideways.

There are certainly handlers, parents, and other family members who get involved in school selection, often wildly overvaluing a player. While they sometimes can be real pain in asses to deal with , i also don't blame a 17 year old for turning to someone he trusts will advocate for him and help with the decision. At least one of our recently departed players had a crazy family member making ridiculous demands.

Others may know otherwise, but all i know about Gardner's mom is that she really liked Anderson. I have not heard about crazy demands in order for him to stay.

Those who expect us to contend for a BE title right away will of course be upset. Anyone who realizes he’s attempting to completely rebrand us and eventually get us to places we Havnt been, will hopefully understand that if the year 1 record isnt immaculate that it’s not time to panic.

And even with this, I expect a better year than the one we just had.

Most high school kids who have committed to a college are great kids. They are very happy when they are at games as everyone is kissing their ass and wants to take a picture with them. Staff would have liked him to stay notwithstanding that his skill set is not what CRP is looking for. Could he develop over time of course.
I intimated last week that we would have news concerning Brandon on Thursday as I knew he was meeting with the new staff then. If the staff didn’t want him they would not have met with Brandon and his mother, it is not very complicated. If Brandon was not interested in playing for SJU he would have left a while ago. Clearly there was mutual interest.
There are 2 possible reasons for why this would not be a good fit and there is no Reason to belabour the point.
Best of luck to Brandon.

Agreed Mase but I still expect Pitino to put a team together that will at least make NCAA Tournament next season.
