2023-24 Roster

Didn’t you say posh would average 8-12 at Iona?
Posh is a good basketball player, his weakness is scoring. He struggled because he tried to do what he is not good at. Which would happen wherever he played. Give me Pitino with Posh surrounded by Soriano and 2 or three guys who can shoot and I go to war with that every time.
Posh as a Frosh terrorizes the Jenkins kid.

I’m overjoyed we got Pitino as coach and think it’s silly to worry about roster composition until he’s had the time to fill it out (i.e. early May). On the other hand the Boards historical tendency to overhype transfers and potential recruits is in overdrive. I have no problem bringing in Clayton and his backcourt mate but let’s not suggest they’d be the best backcourt SJU has had in years. It was only 5 years ago we had a backcourt of Ponds and Simon which was pretty talented for sure.
Wasn’t Simon a small forward? How about LoVett and ponds?

why? You really don’t think it’s possible there are better guards than him?

wusu, who according to you was, idk, a disgusting basketball player? was 100% better than posh this past year. And you are so worried we can’t be a better team this year without him? I liked him too, I am not losing sleep about exchanging him for Clayton or Jenkins.

I have seen Jenkins and Clayton play. IMO Posh at his best with a good coach is much better than Jenkins.
I like Clayton a lot

That last year, which was their most successful year, Ponds and Simon were really the backcourt, with Heron and Figgy the forwards and Clark the center. Certainly Simon guarded the other teams best guard and was really the secondary ball handler. I guess you could argue Heron was the two guard but he did very little ball handling.

Right and perhaps neither (posh or Jenkins) is good enough for Rick to say they will be the starting PG, and only one of them was willing to accept that. Posh isn’t good enough to guarantee 30 minutes. He was apparently offered a spot.

Lovett came and went. Blink.
Ponds stayed long enough to get a sports car and dropped out to pursue his professional basketball dreams.
Now we are lucky if players stay at a school one year before transferring.
It's all about minutes and $.
Full stop.

Posh was a pre-season first team big east player this year. You and others were singing his praises until this year which was a disaster for many reasons. Suddenly he’s not good enough for 30 minutes a game on a team that’s likely to be somewhat of a rebuild next year? I can’t wait for this stud transfer pg to come to make me eat my words.

Doubt Clayton and Jenkins are / will be as good as Ponds and Simon, and I dont think posters are suggesting that.
But, in my view, 5 years is a long time in college hoops to have last had a capable backcourt.

I compare positions, Jenkins wasn't a Point guard.

Clayton Vs. Posh: Clayton
Jenkins Vs. Curbelo: Curbelo was a 5* so he should be way more talented, but he's a clown so: Jenkins.

If Storr was the regular starter then it would go to him over Jenkins.

This is all speculation since neither committed yet though they're expected to.

Can’t compare Posh to Jenkins. Posh is a 5’9” Pg who struggles on offense. Jenkins is a 6’3” + kid who can score. Jenkins really a SG. He just may be better as a 6th man than as a starting SG in the big East but I’m not sure. The comparo really would have been Jenkins vS Storr and I that case I’d choose Storr but it was HIS choice to leave, so we have to move on. I’d liken Jenkins to maybe more of a Wusu replacement. He would still likely get plenty of time if that’s what he is good with.

Lol come on we can’t just start saying the guy is 5’9 now that he’s not on our team anymore

I would argue (and I'm sure Monte would agree) that the backcourt of Ponds & Dunn 3 years ago was also quite capable (with Greg Williams part of that) especially since Ponds was BE rookie of the year and co-defensive player of the year. In any event, my point is the overhyping is amusing since these kids have not played one minute in Big East competition other than the UCONN game; Iona played one game last year against a team ranked in the top 25 at year end.

Dunn and Ponds played HS ball together but never at SJU. Do you mean Posh?

I watched Larry Brown and Phil Jackson come to NY and become morons.
Hopefully Pitino goes the Thibodeau and Showalter route or I am going to just think it’s my fault. All Iona backcourt not good start.
This isn’t any Iona backcourt. They were recruited by Pitino. He knows what is required to win in the BE if he wants them I have a lot more confidence that he is right than I do that Larry is right (no pun intended-or was there) 🤣
