2023-2024 Schedule

QUEENS, N.Y. (May 24, 2023) –
The St. John’s men’s basketball team will host Michigan as part of the 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games at Madison Square Garden, it was announced on Wednesday by the BIG EAST and Big Ten conference offices. The contest, which is set for Monday, November 13 inside “The World’s Most Famous Arena,” will mark the first meeting between the Johnnies and Wolverines since 2000.

FS1 will carry the 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games. Tip times will be announced at a later date.

The 2023 edition of the annual Gavitt Tipoff Games series runs from Nov. 13 to Nov. 17. Honoring the legacy of BIG EAST founder and college basketball visionary Dave Gavitt, who passed away in 2011, the annual series features eight contests between the BIG EAST and Big Ten. After the first three editions of the series all ended in 4-4 ties, the Big Ten took narrow 5-3 victories in 2018 and 2019 before the BIG EAST dominated the 2021 Gavitt Tipoff Games, winning six of the eight matchups. Last season, St. John’s and DePaul were the only BIG EAST schools to take down their Big Ten opponents.

St. John’s scheduled matchup with Michigan will mark the Johnnies’ seventh appearance in the Gavitt Tipoff Games and their first time hosting the event Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm is 4-2 in their previous six appearances, earning wins over Rutgers in its inaugural matchup, Nebraska in 2017 and Rutgers in 2018, but fell on the road at Minnesota in 2016 and Indiana in 2021. Last season, the Johnnies improved to 3-0 at home in the Gavitt Tipoff Games after taking down the Cornhuskers for the second time in the crossover event, 70-50.Joel Soriano led the way with 17 points and 18 rebounds.

St. John’s and Michigan will square off for just the sixth time in series that dates to 1965. The Red Storm owns a 4-1 all-time record against the Wolverines, including a 97-83 victory in their last meeting on Dec. 3, 2000, in the BB&T Classic in Washington, D.C. Anthony Glover led the No. 21-ranked Johnnies with 27 points while Omar Cook chipped in 20 and Willie Shaw and Reggie Jessie finished with 19 apiece in the 14-point win over the Wolverines.

I dodge a major landmine with this game on the 13th and not Nathalie' bday the 14th. Now comes part 2 having her work time off with new job to go on st johns road trip that week and convince her it's a st johns bday party for her and Mrs Panther

Keep Syracuse away. Let them rot. Do not give them any lifeline at all.

Let that program fold for all I care.
I disagree. It’s a huge potential matchup for us yearly. Battle for NY, huge visibility, and it fills up the Garden. It’s a team we love to hate and Syracuse can help us pay the bills and get better. I can’t stand UConn, Syracuse nor Duke, but all those teams draw huge and make for lots of epic matchups. We hired the right coach. Now we gotta being those teams we hate in, to fill the Garden.

It was empty for them at Barclays last year, really empty, which is not just a reflection on SJU, but also on the relevance of Syracuse in this market in 2023. It was far from a sea of Orange. It's been basically a decade since they bolted for the ACC and that pretty much eliminated them from being covered or discussed in NYC. And now Boeheim is gone. For anyone under 50 it is like scheduling Wake Forest.

They ran away from this rivalry when SJU started beating them, at a time when SJU could have really used an MSG date with them. Now that we have Pitino and they aren't even predicted to be a top ACC team I lose their number. We don't need them to fill MSG anymore, and better programs will want to come to MSG to play SJU OOC. Of which there are now many.

And actions should have consequences. They have consistently acted in their own interests, period. Which is fine. We will continue to recruit against them in this state. No reason to give Boogie Fland, as an example, any reason to think of this ACC school as local in any way, shape, or form.

Just a slightly different matchup and venue than playing Nebraska at CA.
I wonder why....

As it stands, Syracuse is not going to help the schedule. The program is nowhere near what they were in the BE.

I would rather use that slot for a game that helps the strength of schedule.

And lastly, I am holding firm that I do not want to help Syracuse by allowing them to play at the Garden. They left the BE because they thought they better than us.

Let Syracuse suffer because they need SJU more than SJU needs them.

Yes. And worse they will still want a home-and-home. No way I'm giving up a home game every two years to play a mid-level ACC team. We should now only be thinking about teams like Duke, Kansas, UCLA, when it comes to home-and-home. This is no time to start thinking small.

I’d say that’s first thier for sure I’d be open to a second tier of teams. We have kids from Texas on our roster I’d strongly consider some Texas exposure

I think that is a function of being at the Barclays which nobody wants to go to. If it were at MSG, I think it would have been a different story. Don’t get me wrong, I can’t stand them. I just think the game would bring in a lot of money. I’d rather get Duke in there like we used to of course, hut we need to pack the Garden and get back to a solid ROI.

Perhaps this is a question for Guinness on here but have Barclays games gotten any easier to get to ? MSG so easy from Huntington even if long but when you talking about switching trains to get to Barclays or linger trains and worse times well that’s where mjmaherjr draws a line

Ok fine with some UBS. I might not like it but it’s not bad to get too and they have that Amex club you get a free drink in. mjmaherjr says yea to that

And of course meeting mcnpa dad and sister for drinks in floral park always a great pre game option till MCN finally starts trekking down too

This year I’m gonna have to plan to trek down. Been too long…

Duke I hate them but we fill and we get some wins. I’d like to see Texas. We did Kansas at ubs and meh. Let’s get some other ideas ? Houston ? I’d like that
