2022-23 Season

Here’s to hoping;

This highly athletic team does generate a lot of turnovers/easy hoops

Obviously, through individual improvement and new faces, adequately shoot deep to avoid being zoned to death or opponents laying off guys to cause havoc elsewhere

Joel continues his marked improvement, avoids switching as much as possible, recovers quickly when he does. A committee of power forwards manages to hold the line in Soriano’s absence. None are true post defenders especially v Creighton, Xavier type front lines and not counting on raw Keita in this role.

Posh and Curbelo coexist efficiently and productively

We avoid notion we can play 11 or 12 guys in this “40 minutes of hell” fantasy and keep everyone happy while wearing out opponents. Like most successful teams, establish an eight, maybe nine tops rotation depending on fouls, etc. to let key hit scorers, defenders stay in rhythm.

The team defends solidly while attacking more proficiently in half court.

As noted by many others, finish shots well.

Imo, we are a hell of a lot better than expected roster wise, so at least there are enough pieces to potentially contend for dance bid, but a lot has to happen on court and sidelines. Looking forward to this season, go Johnnies!

Nywie is he going to keep improving on the trajectory of last season? Seems like he has all the ability athletically to be a force in the big East. I think he is going to surprise next year and be a game changer. Out of the returning big men his ceiling is the highest. Will it translate, we shall see.
Agree on Nyiwe improving and being a factor, but he really is a forward. Unfortunately we need him to defend the post where he can be overmatched by stronger guys. That said, perhaps over summer he increases his strength to better play that role.

while I generally agree with a tight rotation, we might be able to benefit from our depth. Under my scenario, I would like Posh, Curbelo and Jones to each play around 30 minutes a game. The centers Soriano/Nywie would split 35-40 minutes, and Wusu/Mathis/Pinzon splitting another 40-45 minutes. The remaining 30 minutes could go to Stanley, Storr, Traore and King in that order.

I won't be surprised if Wusu plays 25 minutes a game and starts a bunch of games. I don't see coach cutting his minutes too much. He loves him. Hopefully he can make layups this year...

Remember, Wusu is somebody who when he came here, nobody had any expectations for. He's already proven to be a contributor, and showed serious improvement from year 1 to year 2. No reason to think he can't show further improvement in year 3.

Storr is a top recruit and with his skill set is going to command minutes. I think he takes some away from Wusu/Mathis.

Although we will not have a pure 3 point shooter, we have players that can be excellent scorers in Jones, Storr, Wusu, Posh and even Nywie. Soriano and Stanley could have breakout seasons. I really like Omar's athleticism. Reminds me so much of David Russell. If he puts on 20 pounds he will be the power forward we haven't had in a while.

I mentioned in an earlier thread how it's pretty rare for players in Storr's ranking range to be major contributors during their freshman season at the power conference level. Storr could absolutely buck that trend and be a major contributor from day one but history is against that happening.

If he gives this team 12-15 solid mpg while showing some flashes and limiting the mistakes I'd sign up for that. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised with 7-8 ppg than go in expecting a 10+ ppg scorer in year one and have him him fall short.

Mathis, Coburn, Smith, and Pinzon. Meant guards. But it took Wheeler till BE play.

If Wusu starts for this team, then the team is in trouble. When he did shine it was rarely in Big East play. Early on he led the team in shots blocked but to his credit, did improve when he stopped driving to the basket. He is a spot offensive player at best and an occasional defensive stopper but that’s about it.

If Curbelo plays back to his Freshman year he should easily give us 10-12 points per game along with the assists, steals and turnovers. Like I said earlier there are plenty of scoring options.

Disagree about the D. He works great with Posh and is a bulldog and already knows the system. AJ is going to have a big learning curve. His big issue is trying to throw himself at the basket and thinking he is 3 inches taller than he is and that he is going to get a call a la Harden.

Actually, the D was the strong part of his game and no doubt he hustled and often had the task of guarding the opposing team's stretch 3 or 4. It is his handle (as a guard) and his decision making that would have to improve greatly for him to be an impactful player on a better then average team.
