2022-23 Season

I wouldn’t agrue with you saying Mathis as a 5th year guy is better in a lot of areas than those 2. But I think our need and where minutes can be found - shooting on the wing, is gonna lead to more minutes for Wusu, Pinzon and Storr. The minutes at the 1-3 have to be squeezed somewhere. But Mathis played better than I thought he would last year so theres that.

I don't think Mathis will lose as many minutes as people think. I actually wouldn't be surprised if CMA starts Posh, Curberlo, and Mathis at the beginning of the season. I think it's either Wusu or Mathis at that 3rd guard spot for sure. And, I'm not as concerned about the shooting as as a lot of people, I watch enough basketball to know players are always going to surprise and get better, happens every year on every team. Last year it was Wheeler and Wusu who were surprisingly good shooters from the previous year (Wusu improved by 11% and Wheeler by 12%). this year it may be Posh and Curberlo. And if Posh becomes a decent 3 point shooter it shouldn't surprise anyone, his shot was really good to start the season, he started off making 6 of his first 9 threes, and his mid-range shot looked really good all throughout the season, Posh is hard worker and knows more is to be expected of him scoring wise this year.

CMA's best teams have been noted for their assists and steals and this group is built in that manner. CMA has historically played 10/11 players for double digit minutes. Minutes per player will max out at 28/game with 3 players scoring in double digits. Depending how King shows in practice, he may cut into Mathis minutes because he will be part of future if he meets expectations. Will also be interesting to see how Stanley/Traore battle for minutes shapes up in pre-season and summer workouts/games during the trip to Dominican.

We need to change the philosphy towards offense this year. Im starting Pinzon at the 2 this year.

And the rotation should not include Wusu and Mathis. Only 1 of those guys should be playing and id prefer Wusu.
Could not agree more on all fronts! Need a real shooter.

Pinzon is not starting next year and is not a real or pure shooter. Hopefully he will develop into a more than decent one.

Prepare for disappointment as both Wusu and Mathis will be in the rotation with a good chance of one of them starting in a three guard small lineup with Posh, Andre, Jones and Soriano.

With the final scholarship filled, I took a crack at what I think the minutes distribution will be in the important games. Much easier to distribute minutes rather than production because you know you have exactly 200 minutes to give out per game and if you want to add minutes to one player you have to take them away from somebody else.

Guards/Wings
Posh: 32
Jones: 32
Curbelo 26
Wusu: 22
Pinzon: 16
Mathis: 13
Storr: 11
King: 4

Bigs
Soriano: 21
Nyiwe: 15
Stanley: 8
Traore/Keita: 0

I'm probably lower on Storr than many others, but I just can't imagine him playing major minutes as a Freshman with the other guys above him. The staff obviously loves Wusu, and Mathis played major minutes last year and I'm probably lowballing his minutes, so I just don't see where Storr's time comes from. Same with King.

Don't really know anything about Traore or Keita but seems like they are both still a year or two away at least from being contributors. Thinking Nyiwe kind of separates himself from Stanley but wouldn't be surprised if it's closer than what I have. I also only have 4 minutes per game of 2 bigs on the court at the same time and this could get blown up if staff sees Nyiwe playing more at the 4 this season.

Storr will play, and play a lot. Coaches are very high on him.

Aw, you going to sleep on my guy Mathis as well? I'm probably the only person on the board that still sees the value in Mathis. I don't think this roster is quite good enough to where Mathis isn't in the top 8. 2 of those Rutgers teams had a better roster on paper than this team and he found a way to play 20+ minutes and get 7-8 PPG. I think he'll do the same this year, I don't see Pinzon and Storr surpassing a 5th year senior, at least not at the beginning of the season.
I do too. Mathis is always going to get significant minutes because although not pretty he is a competent Big East level player in the big picture. He is a core guy and I don’t see that changing.

Imho Storr, Mathis, Wusu & Pinzon will compete for minutes at the wing positions which can only be good. I really hope Soriano can stay on the floor for 22-24 mpg.

I think he loves Wusu too much. But not seeing if your prized freshman is better than Mathis would be a poor decision. I think Wusu can still improve. You know what you have in Mathis already.
The way this roster is currently constructed, you have a lot of players who are extremely talented in many facets but also have some deficiencies. I think the amount of playing time will change every game for each player with exception of Jones, Posh and Curbelo. All the other players will get time depending on how well they are playing on a given night and depending on who the opponent is and who we need out there to exploit their weaknesses. We have bunch of versatile players and hot hand will play and players with certain skill sets will play when the situation and opponent dictate it.

With the roster now filled out, I look at next season pretty much how I looked at last season(before it started); Right now we should pretty much be a lock for the NIT(obviously I was wrong about that one last season), and if things break well for us we'll be dancing. Still a lot of question marks on this roster including Curbelo, who I'm reserving judgement on till I see him on the court. If I were a betting man, I'd be betting NIT right now and hoping to be pleasantly surprised.

Sensible view Monte. BE being loaded, there is no certain path to dancing. To me this is critical year for Mike to prove himself. Our additions, net of a shooting infusion, seem impressive, but don’t guarantee anything. For starters let’s see how this group performs as a unit and for goodness sakes, let’s hit the BE schedule on a roll and avoid our habit of getting off to poor start in conference play.

We need guys who can score off something other than turnovers.

Right now, we really only have one proven player who can do that: Jones.

And most of us think have a lot of potential in Pinzon and Storr and hopefully Posh on the perimeter. And maybe even Stanley and Soriano inside.

But it's only potential right now. We lost our two best-proven scorers in Julian and Aaron.

So while Mathis' energy, work ethic and defense are commendable, I hope he will not be playing as many minutes this year.
