2019 Coaching Changes

Once again AAC not losing any top coaches while we constantly do in Big East. Not good look.
Maybe the Big East coaches are better. And that is a good look.
Strange hyperbole from Mike. So far this year nobody was poached from either the AAC or Big East. However, Cincy is rumored to lose Mick to VT after VT loses Buzz to Texas A&M. In prior years the Big East has gotten 5-7 teams into the NCAAT while AAC has gotten 2-3, so this is the first time in a while that the AAC has coaches good enough to poach.

Power conferences poach from other power conferences all the time. Stop with the inferiority complex. Good for Houston for keeping their coach, but it has no impact on the Big East.

Worst kept secret ever. This was done during the ACC tournament practically. Now let's see if we get real dominos to fall

Buzz to A&M, supposedly Cronin to Va.Tech, I'm hoping there's like 10 more dominoes instead of just Willard to Cincy.

Kevin Willard is definitely being targeted for the Va Tech job. Would be a big boost in pay and a huge challenge. That job is tough and Buzz is a great coach.

I can't see Mick Cronin leaving Cincy for Va Tech. First off he is legitimately being looked at for UCLA, that is a far superior job to Va Tech. Secondly I think Cincy is a superior job to Va Tech.

Remember Buzz admitted why he left Marquette for what many people believed was an INFERIOR job at Va Tech. He said it was football and all of the re-alignment going on and he was very unsure how the BE would ultimately survive. Marquette is a very good basketball job and Va Tech is not the greatest basketball job so many scratched their head when that happened.

BTW-Jay Young was hired by Fairfield off of Pikiel's staff at Rutgers.

Wouldn't it be the ultimate trolling move by Pikiel on SJU if he hired Rohrssen to replace him...LOL!

Oh he would be dumb not to leverage it with SHU but if it comes down to money SHU can't match what Va Tech can give him in the end.

Move would make sense financially but I'm just having trouble picturing him leaving Seton Hall for Virginia Tech.

It is a football school in a BRUTAL basketball conference. I mean UNC and Duke are tough enough but now you got your state neighbor down the road building a monster program, UVA and Tony Bennett. And the program outside of the last few years under Buzz has very little basketball history.

It just shows how good a coach Buzz Williams is. What he has done at Va Tech is tremendous. Again many looked at him and scratched their head when he left a great situation at Marquette (and remember Marquette has money) for that job.

But Willard is a solid coach. But man he is going to have to get players to have any shot in that conference.

While A&M much better known as a football program, school had a good run of NCAA appearances under Gillespie and Turgeon and then an excellent year under Kennedy in 2015-2016 earning a 3 seed in NCAA. When Turgeon left for Maryland I recall he complained a bit about inconsistent fan support at A&M for basketball program, but seems tailor made situation for Williams with his Texas A&M roots to bring back a real "buzz' to the basketball program. Good move for him for sure.
I also have a hard time seeing Willard leave Hall for Tech job but will be interesting to see how that plays out.

agree & think that is why he stays at SH.

BTW-When people talk about turnarounds and how SJU has “improved” every year under Mullin look at Va Tech, that is a turnaround. Because we are not talking about improving by a couple of wins every year and we are not talking about taking over a program coming off back to back 10-8 conference seasons and then failing to match either season in 4 years.

Seth Greenberg went 4-12 his last year at Va Tech and got fired. James Johnson only got 2 years and went 4-14 and 2-16 before he was canned. After first year of 2-16, Buzz went 10-8, 10-8, 10-8 and 12-6 in THAT CONFERENCE. NIT, NCAA, NCAA, NCAA last 4 years. 42-30 in conference his last 4 years. Beat Virginia on the road last year, beat Duke I think 3 consecutive years including this year without Justin Robinson. 1 total NCAA Tourney appearance in 20 years, that was Seth in 2007, before Buzz just took them to 3 straight.

But the key is the 3 years PRIOR to taking over Va Tech they went 10-42 in conference. That is a turnaround. That is improvement.

I'm having trouble picturing Willard anywhere but Seton Hall. Fear of being typecast may be enough to make me move, but I don't think I'd take the Va.Tech job.

This is no ploy.

Trust me Whit Babcock of Virginia Tech would not be pursuing this if he thought he had no chance and Willard would be using him as leverage to get more $$$ out of SHU.

Willard is seriously considering taking the job.

Cluess more likely than Bobby

The board will be furious but I question whether Hurley is an upgrade over Willard.
Have become very impressed with Willard the past few seasons.
Team is well prepared, seems to have a good game plan, they play very hard for him, good to very good player development and very good in game coaching.
There is a lot I like in Hurley as I wrote on another post but from where I sit today Willard is the better coach.
