2019 Coaching Changes

Cluess more likely than Bobby
Yes...The current SHU men's basketball coach was previously at...? The current SHU women's basketball coach was previously at....? The current AD at SHU was previously at....?

Notice a pattern...

Still think Willard is a bit overrated...solid not very good coach IMO. I think Powell really carried them and he got shady getting Whitehead. Take Powell away and I don't think they're very good anymore. Don't think he'd do well at VT at all IMO. Fans were calling for Willard's head not too long ago.

Think you're way off base here. Willard is solid. Team is in the tourney every season.

I think he's very solid -- recruiting to the Hall has always been more of an issue than his X's and O's, and I assume Va.Tech could increase the budget for assistants.

To me unless $$ is too big to turn down, KW has much better chance of continuing his success in Big East v ACC. Buzz has great contacts in Juco arena and in the South & I just don’t see KW being able to get players as well as Buzz.

The board will be furious but I question whether Hurley is an upgrade over Willard.
Have become very impressed with Willard the past few seasons.
Team is well prepared, seems to have a good game plan, they play very hard for him, good to very good player development and very good in game coaching.
There is a lot I like in Hurley as I wrote on another post but from where I sit today Willard is the better coach.
North, I share your view on Willard. From a pure coaching standpoint he really elevated himself this season. That team overachieved bigtime, and seemed to do so in large part on consistent excellence from Willard.

That said, he also had what for that program - and for many programs - is a generational talent in the season Powell had. And prior to that he had to get a little desperate in getting talent in the door after 4-5 very mediocre seasons to get started. And even with that talent on balance it's basically been a shade over .500 in conference and a first round NCAA loss.

Which I'd obviously take! But despite his clear borderline elite coaching ability at this point, I wonder if there is a little bit of a ceiling on how much talent he's able to recruit there.

And that's where I'd be nervous about Bobby Hurley at SHU. Equal talent? No question, Willard over Bobby as a coach right now. But I think Bobby is probably the better recruiter all things being equal, and I don't think all things would be equal there because there may not be a single last name out there that would energize SHU more than Hurley. They are a powerhouse in Jersey.

Willard is a problem for SJU, but I think it's a somewhat quantified problem, possibly with some downside from where things have been the last few years. There is plenty of downside with Hurley too, but I think there is way more upside for that particular job. There is at least the possibility he could take them to the next level. Good for conference, but not good as direct competitor of SJU.

Although Willard did a great job this year, Seton Hall has a pretty mediocre recruiting class for 2019 (#75 overall, zero 4 stars), and nobody signed for 2020. I think Hall will be fine, what matters most for them next year is keeping the current team together.

I wouldn't worry about Hurley to Hall. I doubt Hall has enough $$$ to poach him from ASU.

On another note, what's up with St. John's? We need to move quickly, the ASU game ended 2 weeks ago. Is CM not able to hire the ACs he's going after?

Very well said, 1512.
My Jersey buddy reveres the Hurley 'name'.
No doubt, he would recruit much better than Willard and pose major problems for us.
The good news is I doubt the Hall can afford to buy his deal out plus pay him 3mm+/year.
Let's hope that's true!
Lol.

My guess is that Willard would take Skinn with him who has far more contacts in that area than the Northeast.

Willard did his best work this year; I think he is an OK-solid coach, who was bailed out to a degree this year by Powell going on an extraordinary run the last few weeks of the season. Willard was getting fired after year 4 at the Hall, and year 5 was an absolute dumpster fire which makes any drama we see look like kindergarten. Whitehead & Co. turned it around year 6 and led to consecutive tourneys the following 3 years (including last). I do think he massively underachieved with last years Angel/Carrington/Desi team, plus Powell as a sophomore. They weren't that different in the post-Whitehead years than we were this year, so people should remind themselves of that.

I hear you Adam.
Hoping for some good news soon.

I don't see how the Hall pays Hurley's ASU buyout.

THE TIME FOR THAT TO HAPPEN WOULD HAVE BEEN BEFORE UCONN GAVE DANNY HURLEY $3 MILLION A YEAR.
