2019 Coaching Changes

Matt had Femi lined up and Mullin didn't bother to show up to meet him. So let's not blame Matt for all the roster construction issues. Secondly, it sounds like Mullin/GSJ made a decision to not have Matt pursue certain bigs bc they didn't fit the desired style of play. Lastly, Matt brought in Owens who would have solved a lot of problems this year had he not left. You can apportion blame however you want on the Owens transfer to Tech, but it's not on Matt. Matt and his hard work/connections/prior relationships brought in Heron and LJ. Heron was up and down at times, but we don't make the tournament without him. LJ was our second best player last year and will likely be our best player this year. Maybe it's a day late and a dollar short, but we will have multiple bigs next season. That's a credit to Matt as well. He received no help from anyone else on staff and our HC has seemingly done the minimum on the recruiting trail the last several seasons. Despite all that, Matt put together a team, which while imperfect, was talented enough to make the tournament and a good x's and o's guy away from being a 6 seed. Sorry for the rambling post, but the ill will towards Matt on this board from some is really dumb.
Matt
Is that you?

Just kidding :silly:
I would speculate Moose that many if not most posters - though we don’t know Matt personally - appreciate all he’s done and are grateful
Also my opinion here - we can compliment and appreciate one ( e.g. Matt ) w/o critiquing another ( e. g. Chris )
Do any of us really know all the behind the scenes strengths, motivations, complications, gyrations involved?
Thanks for your insightful post
And
I hope Matt leaving and Mike Cragg here is the formula for
Better overall staff and recruiting.
How we long for a good team and some nice Ws and less aggravation as w/ 2018-19.

All the best

Does he know any good Italian spots in Lincoln?
Yeah, Pizza Hut and I’m sure there’s a Domino’s that delivers to campus.
Lol.

This entire staff was flawed from the get go. The composition was bad. Just like the composition of our roster. Granted the buck stops with the HC, but IMO every single member of this staff was in way over their head. A HC with zero coaching experience at any level anywhere? His # 2 in the same boat? Matt the sole recruiter? GSJ running the TOs? Come on now????

Which is precisely why I and others are skeptical it is going to work in the future even with a revamped staff.

It seems Mullin likes having Mitch and GSJ on his staff. It seems he liked delegating recruiting to one guy-Matt. It seems he liked focusing on transfers so he did not have to be on the road recruiting HS kids.

Now suddenly he is going to do a 180 and revamp both his staff and his recruiting strategy and be happy and lead SJU to better results.

Man, that is a lot to ask and to swallow.

BTW-I'm surprised it's April 1st and no one has started a thread titled: "Breaking News-Chris Mullin to step down effective immediately..."
Shows how little Mkras cares
Sad but true. Can't be bothered.

Does someone like Pecora come knowing they could be out of a gig in a year or two? Or is he confident that someone in the Northeast would hire him to be an assistant if that were to happen? Hsu likely knows he could find something if he took this gig and same thing happened to him, especially since he doesn't seem to favor one region over another. Phelps probably sees a dead end at USF if he was passed over in favor of Golden and is willing to take a shot back east. But I think a lot of guys may be unwilling to give up current security for what possibly amounts to a temp job.

^^^^This is why I'm skeptical about the revamping of assistant coaches. Will Mullin really change how he conducts business? It just feels like a band-aid/rearranging the chairs on the Titanic approach if you ask me.

I'd rather reboot. The hell with the changing of an assistant coach or two.

My hope is that we hire a new head coach first and then hire ACs that are compatible with the new coach and his coaching style. Hiring assistants who would likely be replaced once a new coach is in place is just doing things ass backwards IMO.

Don’t swallow just yet, chew on it for a while. Hopefully we’ll all be digesting some positive news very soon.

After reading the article I believe a lot of this has to do with getting is wife closer to her family and his prior, close relationship with Hoiberg (sp). I also do not understand why the "Slice" position on the staff was never filled. If it was financial then how much would buyouts of other staff members cost us and can we do that and still bring in an effective staff?

Tom Pecora is 61 years old. How much longer than 2 years would he get elsewhere?

Depends on your perspective. 61 seems pretty young to me!:)

pecora's resume is mondain at best. picky is a close friend of mullin's (no thx been there don't that) and the other two are fair but unknowns. MC needs to clean house period

Yes, Pickney and Mullin are close, but Ed is absolutely qualified, given his resume.

Man I have a good feeling about all this! Very long meeting between Chris and AD Cragg today! I get a feeling Mullin will not be back! Dont believe for a second AD Cragg will go the route od Duke Alumni! He wants his own legacy! I have a good feeling we are going to see Slick Rick with a 5 year contract, caveat is Rick will have to hire and groom his successor! Man I havent been this excited to be a Johnny fan since Fran was hired, and then when Fran got Ron Ron! Go time Johnnies!!

Pinckney is definitely qualified and Hsu looks like he'd be a great recruiter for us. Phelps has loads of potential, Queens roots and instant credibility with players having won a national championship and been second team All ACC. Any of them would be upgrades.

I have a feeling you are completely wrong.
