He is an alum.
If there were good terms he wouldn't be leaving.
You think he leaves under same circumstances except SJU was winning, they had multiple recruiters bringing in solid recruits and challenging for BE titles like I'm sure he thought they would be at this point when he took the job 4 years ago, almost to the day. Again I am not a big fan of his but I can assure he is not simply leaving "to be with Fred."
I've been in business for a long time, and I've had employees who I've had an excellent relationship with leave me after many years for just a few $ more. For some people, it's simply about the $. Besides, imagine the money that would have been thrown at Matt if he had actually built a balanced roster here and we had real success with the kids he brought in? Lets face facts, there was always going to be a better financial offer from a state school. And my feeling is that Matt would have always used that other offer to try and negotiate a better deal from SJU. No employer is going to tolerate an employee who continuously does that. Reminds me a lot of Fraschilla.
That's fine I don't doubt that you experienced that.
I can all but assure you this is not what happened here.
This has been rumored for more than 1 month. You think that is by accident? Who do you think leaked this rumor more than a month ago?
You think this happened because things were on good terms?
You don't plan/hope for something for more than a month because you are happy in your current situation.
So where do the bad terms come from this time.Seems like problems always come. So far it's problems with Barry Rohrnsson, Mullin, rest of the staff, money, admin, Which is it and why do these things always happen here.
Let’s be clear I am not defending Matt. I think his worth is overrated.
Here is my point. Let’s take the LSU situation and assume he did try to extract more money from SJU.
Let’s assume the worst. What law is there that said SJU had to give in? What constitutional right does Matt have to be an AC at SJU?
Who ultimately gave in to the blackmail assuming it went down that way? Who’s fault is that?
Why are you talking about constitutional protections and criminal laws? Nobody even hinted at either being relevant. It’s literally impossible for you to stay on point in even the narrowest of issues.
You can leverage offers — real or imagined — to try to improve your contract and everyone knows that. Everyone also knows that going to that well too often is bad look.
This seems pretty simple. Matt sees more benefits — be it monetary, job security, chance of success, better environment for his family, etc. —- hitching his wagon to Hoiberg than staying with Mullin. It’s perfectly reasonable to think that Matt and Mullin are on good terms but St. John’s simply can’t match what Hoiberg and Nebraska will offer. I’m sure Hoiberg has already received the green light to pay his preferred assistants what it would take to get them to Lincoln before taking the job.
But that doesn’t fit the narrative of this being a sinking ship.
