2019 Coaching Changes

I wonder why so many posters seem to take delight in creating a Mullin vs Cragg conflict ? As if one even exists , which likely isn’t the case at all. Better to think the two of them are working in tandem to improve the Team’s prospects in the near and long term .

Because some people thrive off of drama/conflict, even when it doesn't exist.

If there were good terms he wouldn't be leaving.

You think he leaves under same circumstances except SJU was winning, they had multiple recruiters bringing in solid recruits and challenging for BE titles like I'm sure he thought they would be at this point when he took the job 4 years ago, almost to the day. Again I am not a big fan of his but I can assure he is not simply leaving "to be with Fred."
I've been in business for a long time, and I've had employees who I've had an excellent relationship with leave me after many years for just a few $ more. For some people, it's simply about the $. Besides, imagine the money that would have been thrown at Matt if he had actually built a balanced roster here and we had real success with the kids he brought in? Lets face facts, there was always going to be a better financial offer from a state school. And my feeling is that Matt would have always used that other offer to try and negotiate a better deal from SJU. No employer is going to tolerate an employee who continuously does that. Reminds me a lot of Fraschilla.
That's fine I don't doubt that you experienced that.

I can all but assure you this is not what happened here.

This has been rumored for more than 1 month. You think that is by accident? Who do you think leaked this rumor more than a month ago?

You think this happened because things were on good terms?

You don't plan/hope for something for more than a month because you are happy in your current situation.

What in God's name are you talking about? What are these posters "creating?"

More importantly why would anyone care what a message board "creates" if it is not true?

I lost respect for him when he pulled that LSU bullshit knowing damn well it was to shake the University down for more money because we were in no position to lose our only recruiter at that point. I'm confused, how exactly is that a shake down? He was approached by a competitor with a great offer and brought it to St. John's and asked them to match it.

I know we all want to be idealistic, but this is a business guys.
Ron Rutledge had a great offer from FSU’s Pat Kennedy back in the day. Real tempted but stayed when St. John’s either matches or came close to matching it.

Simple, anything less than Mullin being the 2nd coming and you are wrong. I really wasn't kidding when I said some would still defend him if he lost 100 straight games.

I have no real inside knowledge of what went on with Matt this time around, but I will say this: I've known many people who have gotten unhappy with their current employment situation as soon as a better opportunity presented itself. Much like I've gotten very unhappy with someone I was dating as soon as someone else caught my eye. Matt's a shrewd guy, I'm sure much of what's been leaked(unhappiness, etc) is by design. Rest assured, its not the first time.

I think Matt is leaving on good terms but everything I’ve learned of Matt makes me believe it is highly unlikely he will reveal info about any kid he thinks he can land in Nebraska. It’s always been all about Matt and he doesn’t care who he has to take out at the knees for his boss to like him.

He has no shot of being a head coach or even an associate head coach due to his lack of knowledge of the game...he just wants to be someone’s lap dog.

So where do the bad terms come from this time.Seems like problems always come. So far it's problems with Barry Rohrnsson, Mullin, rest of the staff, money, admin, Which is it and why do these things always happen here.

Whats the Nebraska version of Redmen.com

Asking for a friend

Let’s be clear I am not defending Matt. I think his worth is overrated.

Here is my point. Let’s take the LSU situation and assume he did try to extract more money from SJU.

Let’s assume the worst. What law is there that said SJU had to give in? What constitutional right does Matt have to be an AC at SJU?

Who ultimately gave in to the blackmail assuming it went down that way? Who’s fault is that?

Thanks, Redken; always enjoy your posts. I am a huge John Lennon fan and agree he was certainly not one to take a Pollyanna view of the world. However, in this case and with Johnnie fans needing some sunshine, I'll leave you with another Lennon song quote from his solo years (Watching the Wheels) which will hopefully echo the way Cragg & Mullin are feeling "I tell them there's no problem, only solutions".... Here's to finding some solutions over the coming weeks.

I would hope Cragg/Mullin/whoever is in charge is going to hire a new recruiter soon since pretty much any relationship we had with any former, or current recruit is completely severed. So sad that one assistant coach leaves, and we basically are starting from scratch, kind of like a brand new head coach would be. Hence why I think SJU should just completely hit the reset button, and get an entirely new staff including head coach.

Riiiight...the problem was Matt and not Mullin. Matt is a good recruiter who would've loaded us up with high level HS recruits if Mullin didn't do everything he could (unintentionally obviously) to steer our program into a dumpster. It's a lot easier to be a salesman at Ferrari or Maserati than KIA. When the product sells itself and you have interested prospects because the product is so good, recruiting is not nearly as hard. In other words, we relied on transfers because that's all Matt could get with Mullin's results. Not to mention he was obviously unhappy and several tweets a while ago gave us a bit of insight into that. Before anyone asks if I had an attorney record him verbatim stating such, no I did not and no I don't need to do that to know he wasn't happy. It was obvious. Imagine one of the guys you work with quits or gets fired and instead of hiring someone to replace him, the company wants to save money so they have you do both jobs. The problem was never Matt.

Why are you talking about constitutional protections and criminal laws? Nobody even hinted at either being relevant. It’s literally impossible for you to stay on point in even the narrowest of issues.

You can leverage offers — real or imagined — to try to improve your contract and everyone knows that. Everyone also knows that going to that well too often is bad look.

This seems pretty simple. Matt sees more benefits — be it monetary, job security, chance of success, better environment for his family, etc. —- hitching his wagon to Hoiberg than staying with Mullin. It’s perfectly reasonable to think that Matt and Mullin are on good terms but St. John’s simply can’t match what Hoiberg and Nebraska will offer. I’m sure Hoiberg has already received the green light to pay his preferred assistants what it would take to get them to Lincoln before taking the job.

But that doesn’t fit the narrative of this being a sinking ship.

Where did I say there was a problem? Why is this forum so obsessed with assessing blame? Matt has done enough to return. So has Mullin. Not everything has to be placed in one extreme or another.

My issue with Matt has nothing to do with his performance. He’s a troublemaker. It’s not just here either. Nobody has a problem with Slice! The guy is one of the most well liked people in basketball. For Matt to have issues with him is very revealing to me.

Sharing his schedule and exchanging info with local scribes for giving him credit in the posts/tweets/articles is bush league and it creates the illusion that the coaches not being cited aren’t working as hard. St. Jean isn’t texting Zach at 3 AM about how tired he his from running practice and gameplanning.

I also don’t think Matt has an eye for talent and it was a mistake for Mullin to let him run recruiting like a czar. What else is Matt going to do though? Big man drills? Where else can he contribute. He’s more lost on the sideline than Marillac during his metaphysics final senior year after missing 75% of class coming back late from his gf’s dorm in Ithaca.

I am in the minority of posters that likes the transfers. I think we need that here and I appreciate that Matt goes that route. He just doesn’t evaluate talent properly.

His departure creates an opportunity to add a true monster in Hsu. He gives all the creativity Matt has with better connections and a much better understanding of basketball. And he can coach! Best of all he can co-exist with guys who want to help recruit.
