2018/19 Schedule
Yeah, they played them the first year, but I'm sure someone (network, conference leadership) sees it as a local rivalry game. So far in Gavitt they've played Rutgers, Minn, and Nebraska. Not exactly highlight games. At least in 2 of those years they played Mi St and Indiana in other tourneys.
I like it. Raises the ante, but beating Rutgers send a food postcard to our Jersey targets and highlights our NY's Team label to key local kids, like Kofi

Are any of those guys seriously considering Rutgers? Asking for a friend.

Date of the game is Friday, November 16. Might be a packed house that night, as Rutgers football hosts Penn State the following day, so some fans might want to warm up with this one.

If past history of this event means anything, pick Rutgers if the Big East is up 4 to 3 entering this game. If the Big Ten is up 4 to 3, slam it on the Johnnies. If it's not 4 to 3 entering this game, then who knows? That's never happened before.

We are in the process of putting together one of the worst home non conference schedules in a while.

With two games left to schedule hopefully they change this. If not, another sign this program is falling back into the Norm years.

Would like to see more Michigan State, Texas, Florida, Virginia, etc. type schools. We know noncon is meant to be mostly cupcakes, but our chances to get ranked wins will be very few this year. Nova will probably be the only ranked team in the Big East so in those expected down years, it would help greatly to schedule top 25 national programs. If you knock 1 off and take care of the cupcakes it will set you up nicely for March. Get an early signature win when teams are still working out kinks.

SJU is now at a point where they can compete with the top teams. The atmosphere at the Duke game along with the recruiting ,financial benefits and strength of schedule boost should make a game vs a top team a must.

Not sure if posted already but Rothstein tweeted this morning we will host Wagner at home.

That leaves us with one last game to schedule. Wouldn't mind playing in that Under Armour doubleheader at MSG. Seton Hall competed in that the last two years.

That's 4 teams from the NEC, with Wagner being the best of the bunch last year (regular season champs).

Blake Francis (#3) and Romone Saunders (#11) are the top returnees, and two of their three main scorers last year. So, they could provide a decent challenge.

Agree that we should schedule a major conference opponent at MSG if at all possible for that last game.

Big East is down somewhat.

SJU has an easier out of conference schedule.

Door is open for successful “dance” season with Ponds.

Can Chris, staff & team seize the moment, independent of injuries of significance?

To me this season is litmus test with ample opportunity to impress, show program is alive and positively impact recruiting. Time for SJU to get some return on its ample financial investment in this regime.

The Princeton game is at MSG. We should try to schedule a game against a top program every year at the Garden.

Schedule will be easier next year which also could mean less margin of error to get into the NCAA's for those who think that is attainable.

Agree - Depending on who the last opponent is you need to go 11-2 non conference.

Big East will probably need 10 or 11 wins as the RPI will not be as high with this schedule.

Agreed regarding major opponents at MSG. Imagine Michigan St. vs. SJ at the Garden...or UNC...or something. I have a hard time believing we can't get some top programs to bite at that with the exposure in NYC. What could the reasoning be if they're the ones turning us down?

Good teams have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing us at MSG when we aren't good. We have played well in the garden these past few seasons, the kids enjoy playing there.

IE Our Duke series and recent Syracuse series. Although it would be nice to start a series w another quality opponent.

I would think playing in NYC to showcase for potential major recruits in the NYC area is a reason to. That said, I guess they get the best ones anyway

Good teams would prefer to play a home and neutral series if always given the choice. They already have tough games scheduled through tournaments/challenges. The last thing they want is playing a tough road game to subpar teams. Duke and Syracuse are horrible examples because their crowds always pack out MSG. Its basically a second home court for them.

And even with that supposed advantage, they still don't beat us. So, you can understand why a team that wouldn't draw quite as well (Notre Dame, BC, West Virginia, just to name a few) does not want to take their chances. They'd much rather play at MSG in a neutral tournament, where the ticket distribution is equal.
