2018/19 Schedule

This should be a tournament team with or without Heron
Mark, except for 4 players, everyone else is new to the team and even those that practiced will have to break into the lineup. Without Heron this team is good but not a sure bet to make the tourney. A lot of x factors involved including the coaching structure.
3 of the 4 returning were the top 2 players and the 4th best player

A lot of moving parts with the others but it's not like it's all freshman coming in

NCAA or bust. Its time
Youngest team in America
Lots of X factors involved
He started with nothing
Mullin needs more time
Just deal with it, we will always be awful
Go root for Duke if you have expectations
Sure, DePaul gets 4 star HS recruits, but it's unrealistic for us to
Lavin left the cupboard bare
The conference is tough
Yeah, but Mullin has won more and more games each year (with the bar on the floor to begin)
Just...idk let it play out
Injuries

Any other rationalizations/excuses to add?
If we are on the bubble come Selection Sunday, then I hope it comes down to us vs. Northwestern for the last spot. If their non-conference schedule is better then ours, it's not by much, and I still think the Big East will be stronger then the Big 10 this year.

Definitely a poor schedule. Believe it or not, we still have twice as many 300+ games as they do (4 vs 2). Fresno St (and Oklahoma/Miami) were also better last year than any team on our schedule not named Duke. So, while we do have the Duke outlier, I still think their schedule is better overall.

Do you remember how many post season games he won?
Yes, 1 NIT Game.

Still take that over what we got now!
To think that the Lavin years were the good old days where we were disappointed with our 2 NIT bids, not satisfied with just being invited to the NCAA and not satisfied with 20 win seasons.
Could you imagine the uproar if Lavin never moved to the West Village and commuted to a mansion in San Francisco or if Rico Hines was awol half the year? Then we would have really complained!:cheer:

I remember going to this game with my brother during the early part of the Final Four season. I wish we had scheduled a matchup against a power program this season.
Technically #244 Cal is a "power" program, so there's your big time home power matchup.

Don't forget about the MSG headliner against #190 Princeton. They're not a "power" program, or even average by D1 standards, but they're not as bad as the majority of our schedule at least.
Bowling Green could fall into that "sneaky tough"category as well. According to CBS RPI, they were #193 last year, and all of the key players are coming back, I believe.

We should beat them, but don't be surprised if that game is somewhat competitive.

I had high hopes for the season (especially if Heron is eligible). I have every expectation that they will play very well and be a tournament caliber team. Maybe even a team who can win a game or two. But with this schedule, there is a very real possibility we won't get a chance to see it.

Postell25, I hear you on the schedule being poorly constructed. But if MH is eligible and we are as good as we all think we can be, schedule won't matter as we should win at least 12 in BE regular season and 12 of 13 non-conference games and be good enough to overcome a lower than expected NCAA tournament seed. I agree that schedule can come back to bite us if he isn't eligible.
I can't hear "that the schedule won't matter." We we win 12 Big East regular season games and 12-13 NC games then we will not get the seed we would deserve. The schedule only won't matter for people just content with squeaking in to the NCAA Tournament. I apologize for wanting more than that.

Agreed 100% NC Johnnie. If we end up 26-7 or 25-8 after the Big East Tournament there is no way they are keeping a 25-26 win Big East team out of the NCAA Tournament. If we are a bubble team we are in trouble.
You talk as if just win total is enough to get you in to the tournament. Sure, that would probably do it, but we'd still be in the 8-9 range in seeding (which this board would flip out about). I'd rather be a 22-11 team with a good schedule than 26-7 with an embarrassingly bad schedule.

That's understood Postell 25, unfortunately, that ship has sailed and we are not in that position. Now we just have to root for a high enough finish in conference and the highest win total possible and then whatever the seeding is it is. We need to make the tournament no matter what.

As Mean Gene said, the schedule is done and no amount of complaining on this board is going to change it. We all agree it is unfortunate. Of course the poor schedule won't help our seeding. My point was if we are as good as we expect to be with MH and we win 24 or 25 games we will be in the tourney and should be able to play through a lower seed. Last year's Elite Eight included two 9 seeds and an 11 seed.

"Right before the start of every season is when the St. John’s Red Storm are supposedly the team to watch out for in the Big East Conference. The program, forever a sleeping giant, that is to awaken from its slumber to reclaim some great glories of yesteryear with Chris Mullin manning the helm.

Each new season, however, the Johnnies fail to live up to that hype. On the surface, it’s unfair to bash a program for failing to live up to others’ expectations for it."

lol exactlyyyyyyyy. SJU love hyping the team. Oh this guy looks great. OMG the roster looks awesomeeeeeee, we gonna do damage this year, then when conf play begins reality smacks us in the face and it's a sucky year in the end, and we say oh maybe next year. I learned ot to do hype anymore, because in the end i'll look like a blind fool.
It's time to just let the team do the talking.

Scoring margin and net offensive and defensive efficiency could make up for our lack in strength of schedule. This could be good for us.
Per Rothstein, what really counts re dancing;
NET versus RPI will be split like an atom over the next few weeks, but here's one important thing to remember: The best way to still build an NCAA Tournament resume is to beat teams that are projected to be in the NCAA Tournament.

Sources: The Big East will now begin conference games for the 2018-19 season on Saturday December 29th. Full league schedule is expected to be released in the next two weeks.

I'm hoping we start on the road, since I booked a trip for Christmas week. Coming back December 30th. Booked it anticipating that conference games would not start until New Year's Eve, as previously reported. If we begin at home on the 29th, I'm going to have to make some changes.

Us S Floridians should start making plans for the GT game in Miami. Maybe we can coordinate and sit together.
