2017-18 Transfers
Have we determined that WW is better than / deserves to start over Keita? Next year may witness several ‘starting’ lineups, one a 3-guard setup, with Ponds, Simon, and Dixon—backed by Trimble(?), and Williams; the other a traditional lineup of 2 guards, Clark, Owens (?!!?), Keita—backed by Roberts, Diakite, another big(?).

My take fwiw is we don't need to get too concerned at this point about who starts next year. It is more critical that we get a big man, whether through grad transfer or JUCO option, who has a low post game, can rebound and give us significant minutes. While I expect both Owens and Keita to get plenty of minutes at 4/5, not sure either of them will give us much of a low post offense which we need. From reading posts of others far more knowledgeable than I on the newcomers, seems like next year should be a learning year for Roberts and Marcellus. I would hope that we have a core rotation of Ponds, Simon, Clark, Dixon, Owens, Keita, the to be identified big man whether WW or someone else, with either Williams or Trimble serving as 4th guard. It will be great to finally have some depth. Of course all this can change if not everyone returns.
Sense a wing will be targeted as well

Of course until people start leaving there's only 1 ride available to give this spring. If there are to be departures you hope that they would happen with enough time to fill slots with a contributor, if one is available.

They know of one for sure.

Wyatt Walker. The next great white hope after Amar Alibegovic graduates.:cheer: ;)

Bound to finally hit on one with a modicum of ability.

Here's the main problem, we don't have a starting spot to offer this kid. Offering him Owens starting spot could very well cause Owens to transfer himself. Schools who have major minutes to offer might have a better chance.
I count two definite starters, and two guys you need to lead to believe that they will be starters. There's one spot open.
I understand where you're coming from. But I have a hard time believing both Dixon and Keita sat out a year to come here and being content to come off the bench. As far as Clark and Owens, they have the ability to transfer too. Gotta keep them happy.
You have 2019-20 to keep them happy -- neither Dixon nor Keita would transfer after 2018-19 if they had to come off the bench next season, especially considering that one of them will definitely have to do so anyway. And neither Clark nor Owens would be able to transfer if after a few games next season one of them had to come off the bench. Aside from that, an insider on Johnny Jungle said recently that Owens returning is still up in the air.
I think this is the least of our worries. When it comes to playing time we got more of it than bodies to use it on. Come to St. John's good seats still available.

Honestly fellas, Ponds is not coming back. I don't see Yakwe back and possibly another too. Our coaches better recruit their ass's off because its gonna be another revolving door next year too, par for course. I just hope Simon, Owens, and Clark are back. Those guys are warriors.
his stock is at a all time high. Late 1st round or early 2nd. Gone! Mark my word
That is a depressing thought. Although a first round drat would be good for Ponds.I think the concensus is he needs another year. But, we will see.

Late 1st/early 2nd is really early from what has been reported. He’d be lucky to even get drafted this year is he were to leave. Remember, other than his amazing run the last month, he was having a very poor shooting season.

true

I luv the guy. Great college—virtually unguardable player (at his best).
But, seems to me he’s had an up and down season, and his game—while thrilling over the past month—was spotty early on.
For legitimate reasons perhaps—LoVett’s shocking departure, Shamorie’s injuries, the team in sharp transition—but he still has to establish shooting consistency and defense intensity over at least a full year to gain 1st round status—or even 2nd round—from the NBA.
IMO, he needs one more year to establish his credentials with NBA scouts and talent evaluators.

Wyatt Walker looks pretty good in the video. Rare to see so many nice passes in a highlight video. He looks agile too.

Of course unless our staff is getting their recruiting cues from this website one wonders what sort of relationship (if any) exists with random prospects we read about here and the actual recruiting relationships they are working at building.

The amount of size, skill and athleticism required to even make a roster in the NBA is insane. If players like Ponds are being made to believe they are NBA ready, they are being lied to. No point even trying as a sophomore unless you get guaranteed money. Isn't that for first round only? He has 2 coaches that he needs to listen to. If Ponds comes back, and has a full year of good health , he will have a big junior season. NBA scouts need you to bring it every night. I hope he gets it right.
