2017-18 Transfers

I know that there is still a big step that must be taken, but I’m feeling so much better about the road trip with my wife (a Duke alum) for the scheduled game against Duke at Cameron. This really could be an extremely fun and exciting team — the trio of Ponds, Heron and Simon is ridiculous. And, that’s not even including LJ and Dixon.

Happy to hear that they plan to submit papers ASAP and are contemplating retaining counsel. We’ve learned how slow and arbitrary the NCAA can be (remember the Sanchez debacle). Legal and basketball approach overlap — full court pressure!!!
No one who has been a fan of this program for any substantial length of time believes he will be granted that waiver.

Who knows, but.....just sayin'.
I hear you JohnnyFan. That's usually the way with us--but not this time.
We're on a roll, man!
I can feel it.
Also, total guess but the Herons are smart folks and I bet they did some prep work on Mustapha's chances to get a waiver.
It's not so much that the odds are long, it's that the NCAA has been inconsistent in its decisions on the hardship rule, so there's no transparency.
That said, it looks like the transfer rules are in the process of changing, with the committee set to vote this June on 'academic exceptions' and other sidebars to allow D1 football and basketball athlete's to more easily transfer.
This hardship rule may become a piece of the puzzle.
Who knows.
We can hope.

Reminds me of a feeling I had about twenty years ago when I was on campus for a visit and wound up with a poster that said "Back Among the Elite".

You're getting greedy, but we're on a roll--so, yeah, why not?!?

Nevada and St. John’s have again proven in the last 24 hours that transfers are more than a capable way to build a program. Very similar to Iowa State under Fred Hoiberg. #SJUBB

Favorable press on the transfer route.
How about that?!?
Goes to show, when you're on a roll, you're on a roll.

And BTW, major first rate stellar kudos to Matt A for being honed in.
The guy seems to be forever 'prospecting'.
Thanks Matt A!!!

Thank you for choosing St. John's Mr Heron, thank you for coming back Mr Ponds and thank you Mr A for your tireless work on the xfer wire. Fun times again in Queens

Two thoughts:

1. Hopefully St. John's retains experienced counsel to guide Mr. Heron's hardship request. Anyone reading this post that has influence with St. John's should suggest to our beloved "Mom & Pop" institution retain Michael Glazier to assist Heron's application. Glazier served seven years on the NCAA staff where, in addition to his primary responsibilities involving infractions, compliance and legislative matters. Now is not the time to have someone with no NCAA contact or experience to assist Mustafa Heron

2. Again today, much like Wednesday when Shamorie Ponds announced he would return to play next season, this is NOT a good day for the handful of posters on this site who seemingly enjoy negative information regarding St. John's basketball.

Family Hardship Waivers

Family hardship waivers are some of the most common and most controversial waivers decided by the NCAA. The reason it is so controversial is many student-athletes in football and basketball request these waivers, and whether one is granted or denied can seem inconsistent.

The key thing to remember is that a student-athlete is arguing that the best thing for the athlete and his or her family is to allow the athlete to play immediately and that the athlete needs to transfer to assist with an ill or injured family member. The NCAA measures this in three areas.

Nature of the injury or illness:

The injury or illness should be life-threatening and involve an immediate family member (parent, legal guardian, or sibling). Waivers that are denied typically involve an extended family member (aunt, uncle, grandparent, etc.) unless that family member raised the student-athlete.

Student-athlete’s responsibilities related to the care of the family member:

The more involved the student-athlete is in the day-to-day care for the family member, the more likely the waiver is to be granted.

Chronology of events:

Waivers are more likely to be granted if something changed that prompted the student-athlete’s transfer like a diagnosis, the actual injury, or a worsening condition. Waivers are less likely to be granted if a family member has been ill or injured for a while, and nothing changed that require the student-athlete to transfer.
When requesting the waiver, the school must submit at least three sets of information, much of which will come from the student-athlete or his or her family:

Documentation from the doctor who diagnosed the family member;
Documentation from the doctor who is currently treating the family member; and
A letter from the student-athlete explaining the need for a waiver.
These documentation standards can be hefty. Medical documentation typically includes both a letter from the doctor and medical documents like charts, treatment orders, and prescriptions.
