2017-18 Transfers

Sorry if this has already been posted

The Boneyard seems to think he is headed to SJU per a local beat reporter with good knowledge (broke the Hurley hiring)

Bad news for UConn fans. Told by multiple sources that Mustapha Heron has his sights set on St. John's. Barring issues with enrollment, which should be nonexistent, he will join the Red Storm.
Here is the final reason why there is little downside and potential high upside (either next year or 19/20 season). Not to be mean to Diakite but knowing his injury and his lack of progress in recovery, assuming you had the choice, who would you rather use that scholarship on: Mustapha Heron with the potential to play as early as this coming season or Diakite? Again no disrespect to Diakite, it ain't even close....

Unless you are going to tell me they had a 5 star kid lined up or a grad big lined up with big numbers ready to contribute immediately there is little downside to this. Best case he is immediately eligible and plays big time, next best case he sits next year and steps in for Ponds starting 19/20 and worst case is he sits a year and then decides to leave. That worst case doesn't scare me much at all.
Yep Fordham.
And rather than even viewing it as a worst case scenario, any top athlete connected to St. Johns would be a boost in our desirability. No down side imo.
Shamorie back. Heron considering us. All good.
All the best.

Did they change the rule that only allowed for a one time testing of the waters for the draft and being eligible to return to school?
Yes. They can now declare multiple times, so long as they do not hire an agent.
My point is, it might be a challenge to favorably impress NBA people, following a year in practice and not in-game competition.
But who knows.
I thought the new rule was you can declare and return to school one time, then the next time you declare you must stay in the draft. That is why it would make sense for every junior or 3rd year player with aspirations to declare because there is no penalty.

I know this will come off negative and we should still pursue him regardless, but I tend to think if he does commit to us and does not get eligible immediately, he will never play a minute for SJ. We got Ponds back but the real miracle would be pairing him with an immediately eligible Heron. Seems like he always flirts with us but has never worked out in our favor. Hope I'm wrong again. The odd thing is some writers seem to think there's a good chance the NCAA rules him eligible immediately despite evidence to the contrary. Not sure why.

Can't see him sitting out a yr and then go into the draft again. What did he accomplish not playing competitive basketball ? If he comes and is no eligible then he says another yr then goes the NBA route. He accomplishes his goal to see his mom and dad and give them pleasure to watch their son play

Some feel very confident about this...my questions are:

1) Any idea of announcement timeline?

2) What are the realistic odds on being immediately eligible? I've heard some say it's a longshot and others imply he has a good chance. Bit confusing.

3) Can we really trust that this is all but done knowing UConn and their favorite game of tampering even after we get a commitment?

You keep asking the same questions again and again. Let things play out.

Actually heard about Heron to SJU last Friday from AAU guy in Ct. where I live. Subsequently heard same from some NYC hoops folks. The common denominator was Heron could arrive Friday. Don’t kill messenger if this is off a bit.

He has to be in a school to apply for waiver so not nutty to envision Thursday or Friday imo. Not suggesting waiver is likely, but hear confidence level of all parties is good. Of course, like all SJU fans, seeing is believing credo is prudent

I’m not sure if he’s coming (but I’ll leave that to Paultzman), but a interesting note to be aware of, Makinde London (former Xavier player) was granted a medical hardship two years ago. If the rumors are true about Heron moms, Heron may have a stronger case.

Zags reporting he is visiting as soon as he gets a release which could be as early as today. It won't get past this visit.

BTW-Paultz is correct that you need to be enrolled at your new school to apply for the hardship waiver. Also the outgoing school plays a role. If the outgoing school (in this case Auburn) supports the waiver it could go a long way to getting the NCAA to approve.

Maybe its time to start a fund to hire the best ncaa lawyer that duke or NC use to get him cleared for this year.
