Hearing Friday arrival
This isn’t a dream? Wonder what it means regarding Shamorie? And no word about ‘immediate’ eligibility or sitting out I guess?
Told he will apply for waiver to play immediately & if that outcome is unsuccessful he is prepared to sit a year. We’ll have to wait until that determination is made. When that is, who knows.
What’s the basis for his hardship appeal?
Is his mom seriously ill?

Would actually prefer this scenario TBH. I know Ponds and Heron on the same team together would be a sight to behold, but having Heron suit up in 19/20 would mean there would be no drop off after losing Ponds this season, plus potentially attract some of the '19 recruits we're in the hunt for. I know this is getting ahead of ourselves but what the heck.
Mattc, I would go for it all next year. If Ponds and Heron are on the floor at the same time, then Mullin can play his Run P(onds), H(eron), S(imon). Ok, that needs work. But those three, plus Clark and a big, would be really good. Especially in a down year in the BE.

Yes, getting ahead of ourselves. But I would love to see that.
better than Run (P)onds (M)ustafa, (S)imon...
All kinds of issues with this, including the following:

1. As far as we are all aware, there is no recent precedent for an immediately eligible hardship waiver being granted and it's possible the rules don't even allow.
2. Is a player of Heron's caliber really going to sit a year if he doesn't get a waiver?
3. If he commits and sits out, where does that leave this season's roster in what we all agree is a make or break year? With our history of depth issues, we're going to have 3 guys in warm-up suits at the end of the bench?
4. Wouldn't UConn be a likelier destination if goal is for him mom to get to see him play as much as possible? I know West Haven isn't around the corner from UConn but still 20 minutes closer than Queens.
Good list. I'll add #5.....

5. Nothing stopping Heron from choosing to sit out, taking a roster spot this year, and then changing his mind to go pro next year.

Wow, thanks Paultz! An incredible ‘interesting item’!
Also stunned, we’re his chosen option and not Darth Vader’s school in his home state!
Rumor has it he considered transferring here last year. Apparently Matt has a good relationship with he & his family.

I hear ya, would just prefer it the other way. I'd like knowing we have Heron in the bank for 19/20, which I really believe would help us in recruiting. As much as I'd love to go for it this season, I'd prefer knowing there's some stability heading into the season after.
I absolutely understand your point. It makes tons of sense. My argument for all playing next year is they would be a top 25 team. The winning and publicity would help recruiting. It would also show guards the they are recruiting that there is plenty of shots for them.

And, I think Figueroa could be that veteran leader the following year.

That’d be a mortal blow JF for sure.
But one would think, a year removed from the court would hurt his NBA draft chances next year.
And maybe the staff knows the kid well, has kept in touch, and would accept his ‘word’?
I recall Louie did that with Walter Berry and later extolled him for keeping his word.
“We shall see.”

Thanks Paultz! Phenomenal and surprising ‘news’ on all counts.

We should be extremely dangerous next year if Heron is immediately eligible. Truly positionless basketball with Simon, Clark, LJ, and Heron running the court with Ponds taking more PG responsibility. Fingers crossed!

Per CBS' Gary Parrish: Auburn’s leading scorer, Mustapha Heron, is transferring. I’m told he’s likely to get a hardship waiver to play immediately — and that UConn and St. John’s are considered the leaders to enroll him.

"taking a roster spot?" Who's roster spot? You're really worried Heron may sit a year and bolt as opposed to them magically landing a unavailable 5 star recruit or grad big who hasn't even shown SJU any interest?

They have a scholarship open, who says they would use it otherwise and furthermore who says they had someone else ready to take it besides Heron.

Insane if true, but I'll remain skeptical until it's all a done deal and he actually shows up this year or actually sits out and plays for us next year. Remember, Auburn was caught up in the FBI scandal. Wasn't he mentioned in that? This kid is a beast of a player obviously, but I've learned the hard way not to start popping champagne before anything is even set. It would be huge either way if he plays this year or next and maybe gets an extension with or without Ponds. Ponds and Heron playing together this year sounds way too pie in the sky for me IMO. Whenever the stars come close to aligning for us, a meteor smashes them to bits. Just being cautious, but of course in some miracle world where he comes for this year and Ponds stays, we could seriously compete to win the Big East with all the Nova defections. Top 25 would almost be expected with that roster. My gut tells me that this all but ensures Ponds is gone, but I hope I'm wrong. Man, what a rollercoaster it is rooting for this program.

By the way, it should be said somewhere that this must not be an easy situation for the young man. Already a lot on these kids' shoulders and can't be easy when you throw a seriously ill parent into the mix. Hope she gets well.

Why do people assume Ponds must be leaving if we land Heron? Wouldn't this be something that would greatly benefit Ponds? He would return to a team and have another star playing with him. This would ease his workload and undoubtedly make him more efficient, and thus probably raise his draft stock for next year.

More PT for Heron and Ponds posting not so cryptic posts saying he "wants it now" and Paultz has said it seems to be his family telling him to wait a year vs. Ponds who wants to go now. I feel like most families would give their say on it but at the end of the day if Ponds keeps insisting he wants to go pro, what family hasn't said "Whatever, it's your life"? I feel like they will let him do what he wants despite their concerns.

“The Huskies do not presently have any scholarships to give, so adding Heron to coach Dan Hurley’s roster would require a departure”.

I never said anything about a 5-star recruit, that's your ad lib.

Call me crazy, after Diakite left, I thought we might be searching for someone over 6'7". That said, I absolutely agree that there is no way you turn down an opportunity to land this type of talent (Heron). I just hope we are doing our diligence. If this blows up in our face, the staff owns it.

Regarding the next recruiting cycle, we should be working on an ridiculously excessive number of big men. #EnoughIsEnough

That wasn't my point you said he "took a roster spot" as if SJU had or could have someone better lined up. No one said they didn't "explore" other options that is not the same as having someone 6-7 or taller automatically lined up.

There are too many variables to try and play out all the scenarios at this point. Needless to say, step one is getting him to commit. Whether he's immediately eligible or not, for a player of his caliber, you get him in either way and then figure out how this effects this year's roster and beyond afterwards.

Hoping Matt’s relationship with Mustupha and his family proves out here.
One pundit’s reporting he’s hearing Heron will be declared ‘immediately eligible”.
Who knows.
I’d be happy to wait a year and trust the kid to be up to his word.
Would definitely help 2019 recruiting.
Am wondering what this means—if anything—regarding Shamorie’s decision, which is imminent.
