2017-18 Transfers

Cal beat writer fwiw;
Ben Parker

Just wanna quickly say Don Coleman (@DonColeman_) is one of the most genuine guys I’ve covered. Wears his heart on his sleeve. Battles, competes, etc. Great kid. #Cal #Pac12Hoops

Poor shooting %: 3pt @ 24%; 2pt range @36%. And a negative A/TO ratio. Seems like we don’t ‘need’ him. Why do we ‘want’ him? Color me baffled.
He must be a football player. Could explain the odd interest in him from staff. If so, maybe we can bring the football program back and demolish UConn! In embarrassment, Hurley leaves UConn and comes to us after Mullin experiment fails.

Buddy of mine who is a Cal fan just messaged me back and said he heard the problem was mostly a classroom issue that bubbled over to a souring relationship between Coleman and the coach. He didn't know specifics, though. But if the beat writer likes the kid that much, then I'm good with it.

Can you ask him if he's good at basketball?

Wake Forest's Keyshawn Woods will graduate and transfer, per release. Averaged 12.2 PPG. Immediately eligible.

Danny manning losing some quality guys

Wouldn't be surprised to see him end up at G'town

He averaged close to 15 ppg in a major conference. He's certainly good enough to be a bridge player. And if for some reason Ponds decides he wants to graduate, then that would be a team with a crapload of firepower. No one is going to fills Ponds' shoes, but the staff needs someone who can kill the sting a bit in 2019-20.

Maybe, they should go out and recruit a decommitment from the '18 class or find an underrecruited or under-rated guard or player from the '18 class. Or, they could possibly recruit a JUCO.

Coleman may be a good player, and I'm not doubting that he isn't one. This just goes the way of the lazy recruiting strategy that I've mentioned previously.

Regarding Coleman, maybe his off court issues with coach affected his play as the season went on. He had two outstanding games against Wichita State (35 points) and VCU (21 points) just before Thanksgiving and some pretty good games in December as well. However his last 8-9 games were really bad and had to bring his shooting percentages down quite a bit. Played very little his sophomore year.

The problem is, I don't think we have immediate playing time to offer any of these decommitted guards. Unless we're expecting the staff to immediately start recruiting over Greg Williams who is part of the same class, and Mikey Dixon who is sitting out and waiting for minutes. Heck, for all we know, Simon is going to see minutes at the guard spots again this year. I feel like most top 100 recruits are looking to play and make an impact immediately, just my thoughts.

Is Coleman a sit out transfer? Didn't he just complete his red shirt junior year with Cal?
Believe he came as a one year Juco & played two at Cal
Strange. He would then have to sit out with only one year of eligibility remaining. That would seem to make him even less desirable.

That's fair, although I still think we could use a point guard in the '18 class. Regardless, they should just bust your ass on the recruiting trail for the guards in the 2019 class. By then, Ponds may be gone, and the backcourt will be Simon (Sr.), Dixon (Jr.) and Williams (Soph.).

So, continue to mine the '19 class for guards, IMO. Coleman only has one year left, so even more reason to not understand this possible move.

Insert year and I've heard that before.

Agree plus I do not think we should recruit over our incoming guards.Does not send a good message to future recruits. They need to trust staff

Actually he averaged 8.6 in conference with 2 DNPs (maybe injured). He killed all the lesser UC's and Cal St's in Non Conference play to raise his average up. Scored 25.5 in those 4 games. He did score 35 against Wichita St though.

Never understood this concept of recruit over. so if your players are mediocre you should just play them and stay mediocre until they graduate? In good programs you compete for playing time.

Thought you had to be a juco grad to transfer to D1?

Not always. Some kids are further along academically than others.
