2016-2017 Season Thread

St. John’s will face LIU Brooklyn as part of the 2016 BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival at Barclays Center on Sunday, Dec. 11. The Red Storm and Blackbirds will take the court as part of a doubleheader that also includes a matchup between Kentucky and Hofstra.

“We look forward to being part of the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival at such a tremendous venue right here in our backyard,” said St. John’s Head Coach Chris Mullin. “I grew up in the borough so it will be exciting to have our basketball program take center stage at Barclays Center for this doubleheader.”

St. John’s has a 4-1 all-time record at Barclays Center. The Red Storm has gone a perfect 3-0 in three prior appearances in the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival, including wins against Tulane (2014), Columbia (2013) and St. Francis Brooklyn (2012).

As part of an all-time series that dates back to 1931, St. John’s has posted a 10-3 mark against LIU Brooklyn. The Red Storm has won the past five meetings, including a 66-53 victory in the most-recent contest on Nov. 19, 2014.

Individual tickets for the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival will go on sale in September, but group tickets are available now by calling 1-800-GROUP-BK.

Aka not part of season ticket package.

Why would it be? They can fill the place with Kentucky fans alone.

Well not like we have 10k season ticket holders. Might require too much effort to try and figure out a way to buy bulk and just include.

We need to balance the schedule.

Battle for Atlantis - three tough games.
@Syracuse - probably pay back for them

Teams at our level
Tulane
Minnesota
Long Beach State

Should be wins
LIU
Binghamton
Longwood
Nicholls State

Six wins out of these would seem reasonable and six conference wins would as well.

Also read somewhere there was a Fordham game potentially to be scheduled and that would hit the maximum. I'd be happy with 8 OOC wins and 8 in conference, ecstatic with 9 and 9.

I'm sure Mullin wants to play Fordham after what happened last season, I hope they schedule them.

I thought it was a very well written and well balanced article. The writer highlights where we have to improve and what our selling points are. Nothing terrible if the staff focuses on player development the next 12 months while focusing on recruiting for 2018.both could work out very well.

all these D2 schools and roll over wins do NOTHING for the program. They only hurt the teams RPI and do nothing for recruiting. Id rather play a packed schedule , take some lumps and steal some wins....that bodes well for the program. I love the Cuse home and home....would love to add a big state team for recruiting purposes like Texas, Cal, UCLA, Florida, or LSU to the mix. With limited OOC games to pick from, those will prepare us better for BE games and post conference games. Also a loss is devastating!!

351 schools in Pomeroy last year. We are playing five ranked below 200 which is fine as we were #222.

Tulane 219
LIU Brooklyn 282
Longwood 290
Binghamton 322
Delaware St. 348

I guess SJU wasn't ready for it next season but from 18-19 on in the years we play Syracuse away there should be a game at MSG vs a national power.

We're at least two seasons away from having the team to play a "packed schedule". We can still steal a couple of wins but we need to develop a winning mentality first.

I agree with building a winning mentality, especially after last season with all these young guys. These games will come early in the season I suppose so I think it's ok for this season. Lets get some wins with this group, build some confidence and then see where we are come February. Next season though I think we need to pack the schedule. I would like to see the home and home re-established with UCLA.

respect your opinions but other teams are building too. most of our guys are returning sophs and id rather play better competition and steal wins. The Cuse win last year was an awesome experience or our kids and was a highlight of the year. Come tourney time ( which i think we still could make ) they will look at who we played OUT OF CONF.....besides Cuse and the Bahamas we have nobody. I just rather learn against better teams. There is nothing wrong with some scrimmages vs D@ guys and a couple a lower tier teams but this seems excessive. Just my opinion, surprised nobody else feels the same.....go johnnies

I'm sure that opinion is shared by many. I'd rather we lose to Michigan State than beat Delaware State next year.

EVERYONE plays some cupcakes, but I like Cappy was hoping to to go 0-13 out of conference next year. Alas.

we have the weakest schedule so far in the BE besides the Atlantis. Believe me with the huge upgrade at guard we will be as competitive as anyone! two cupcakes max,,,,thats all I'm saying. It only hurts come tourney time, what don't you guys see?

A few too many lower tier teams in my opinion as well. I like that we have Tri-State area schools on there, but it should be (schools like) Fordham, Iona, Stony Brook, UCONN, Columbia, Yale, Princeton. I'd even rather see FDU, Manhattan, or Monmouth on the schedule instead of Longwood, Nicholls St and Del State.

come on....why else are we fans? i have expectations for our team. i like the core group we have.....upgrade in guard play will be huge you'll see

Don't have to sell me on the idea....I agree 100% with you. Lovett and ponds will be a huge difference..... not to mention the other additions..... this team has the potential for the NCAA tourney. I think people will be pleasantly surprised.
