2016-2017 Season Thread

This is on an nfl sunday, but I'm sure it won't stop Wildcat nation from packing the place. Per Rothstein:

St. John's will play LIU-Brooklyn and Kentucky will face Hofstra in a doubleheader @barclayscenter on 12/11, source told @CBSSports. #SJUBB

Wasted opportunity. I doubt Kentucky fans/players are enthused about traveling to NYC just to play some sucky mid-major they never heard of.

No reason why St. Johns and Kentucky should not be playing each other that day.

Kentucky fans would travel to watch them play the Little Sisters of the Poor. Plus they have an opportunity to party in NYC. Now if they would only bring some rare bourbon up with them...............

Kentucky is now like Duke in terms of draw. Basketball fans just want to come and see the traveling circus of guys who are making a short stop in college before hitting the NBA

I have been to two St. John's games at Barclay's. Georgia Tech and Tulane. Both were empty.

Our game probably will be, but Kentucky fans tend to pack any arena, at anytime, against any opponent. You'll probably still have to buy tickets early to ensure good seats.

They should make it general admission, with us playing first, so the place is full for our game.

Not crazy about us being the front act for a UK game in New York City.

May be unfortunate but just the way it is until we can fill arenas anywhere. MSG and Barclays are far from being in the charity business.

Plus, I don't think we can ever compete with the Kentucky fan base no matter how many championships we win. They are truly in a league of their own when it comes to fan support. No other school comes close.

Agree. Just don't think we should lower ourselves to be their opening act when there's nothing in it for us besides playing in front of a packed house of UK obnoxious fans (and, no doubt about it, they are obnoxious).

If you don't play this game at Barclays you play it at CA in front of only the die hards. From a marketing perspective if the team is indeed better and fun to watch next year you might convert new fans by playing this game in Brooklyn.

Do you think Briscoe will be there for this one?

Per Rothstein;

St. John's will host Nicholls State as part of its 16-17 non-conference schedule, source told @CBSSports. #sjubb

Nicholls State was 1-17 on the road last year.
Bring it on!!!

id rather play the big boys. never get penalized for losses against the big boys early on. But if you win its a good win.

Playing Nicholls State is ludicrous. If we are going to play a low, low, low major I'd rather it be a local.

Scheduling is two way street.
Maybe low major locals want SJU to grace their home gym as opposed to playing at SJU and SJU won't do that.

Didn't we say the same thing about Incarnate Word last year?

Maybe, but Nicholls St. beat Incarnate Word by 11 at home last season. :p B)

We need to balance the schedule.

Battle for Atlantis - three tough games.
@Syracuse - probably pay back for them

Teams at our level
Tulane
Minnesota
Long Beach State

Should be wins
LIU
Binghamton
Longwood
Nicholls State

Six wins out of these would seem reasonable and six conference wins would as well.

Also read somewhere there was a Fordham game potentially to be scheduled and that would hit the maximum. I'd be happy with 8 OOC wins and 8 in conference, ecstatic with 9 and 9.

St. John’s will face LIU Brooklyn as part of the 2016 BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival at Barclays Center on Sunday, Dec. 11. The Red Storm and Blackbirds will take the court as part of a doubleheader that also includes a matchup between Kentucky and Hofstra.

“We look forward to being part of the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival at such a tremendous venue right here in our backyard,” said St. John’s Head Coach Chris Mullin. “I grew up in the borough so it will be exciting to have our basketball program take center stage at Barclays Center for this doubleheader.”

St. John’s has a 4-1 all-time record at Barclays Center. The Red Storm has gone a perfect 3-0 in three prior appearances in the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival, including wins against Tulane (2014), Columbia (2013) and St. Francis Brooklyn (2012).

As part of an all-time series that dates back to 1931, St. John’s has posted a 10-3 mark against LIU Brooklyn. The Red Storm has won the past five meetings, including a 66-53 victory in the most-recent contest on Nov. 19, 2014.

Individual tickets for the BROOKLYN HOOPS Winter Festival will go on sale in September, but group tickets are available now by calling 1-800-GROUP-BK.

Why would it be? They can fill the place with Kentucky fans alone.
