2016-2017 Season Thread

This is one of the worst OOC schedules I can remember. It appears as though we are literally looking to schedule the worst possible teams we can find. As Gonzalo says above, the mid and low majors we play should be locals... Some combination of the following should be on the schedule every year: LIU, Columbia, Iona, Manhattan, Fordham, Hofstra, Wagner, St. Francis, Stony Brook. If we get to the point where we cannot even schedule Iona or Manhattan because we are afraid of losing to them, then we are in worse shape than I thought.

Gets worse, per Rothstein: "St. John's will host Bethune Cookman as part of its 16-17 non-conference schedule, source told @CBSSports. #SJUBB"

Guam State next?

mark my words, this will come back to haunt us.....and these teams will not prepare us for anyone in our league.

I actually disagree. For returning players coming off last year's stink-fest would be nice to get some wins under their belt. It is easy to get into habit of losing. Unfortunately there is no guarantee we win some of these games but would be nice confidence boost if we could get off to nice start.

That's what I was thinking. With no real upperclassmen on the team, this is a way to boost the younger guys confidence after a terrible losing season. Confidence is huge for a lot of these guys.

I think the schedule is just fine.

We are playing Battle for Atlantis which we will play 3 good teams.
@Syracuse, @ Minnesota @ Tulane I believe is a pretty good out of conference for the team we have.

I think you are all complaining because we do not play a big out of conference game at home this year.

@wildjays summary thus far;

LIU-Brooklyn, Nicholls St., Longwood, Binghamton, Delaware St., Bethune-Cook, @ Tulane, @ Minnesota. SJU non-con hinges on Battle 4 Atlantis

Would have been better to schedule the UConn womens team. Would prepare the team better for conf play

If we played a tough schedule and were 5-6 going into BE half the board would have had a mental breakdown and people would be calling for ST Je ... er Mullin's head before New Year's Eve

Syracuse is the only real saving grace, but yes, at least MN and Tulane have had some national spotlight over the years. I don't argue with the fact that we should schedule some OOC games that we are favorites to win, but we don't have to stray too far from NYC to find worthy opponents that have more meaning, even if the only meaning is the greater tri-state area. Fordham, Rutgers, NJIT, Stony Brook, FDU, Iona, Manhattan, Wagner, St Francis, Hofstra, St. Peters, Columbia, Princeton, Yale, Temple, St Joes...(not suggesting all of these, just thinking of possibilities). Throw in two (and only two) wacky choices like Bethune Cook and Nicholls State and it looks logical and respectable. Fordham and Syracuse should be every year. I'd argue that UCONN should be annual as well. I'm sure this is no small task to schedule OOC games in general, but why can't it be 3 or 4 from a pre season tourney, 5 or 6 with local ties, 2 odd ball choices, and maybe 1 PAC 10 home and home every other year.

I think you are all forgetting battle for atlantis as possibly 3 games.

I think the schedule is almost set
18 Big East Games
LIU Brooklyn - Barclays
Nicholls St
Longwood
Binghamton
Delaware State
Bethune-Cook
@Tulane
@Minnesota
3 @ Battle for Atlantis

I believe that leaves us with 1 or 2 more to schedule that would probably be Fordham and Holiday Festival.

We have 5, a total of 5 returning players, 3 of whom should get substantially less minutes this season, with a total of 6 years of playing time between them. As a matter of fact the 5 returning players have less or the same combined experience as last seasons 3 returnees. We add 6 new players, of which 4 have never played a game of division 1 ball and 2, Tariq and Darien barely played. Who and what do you expect us to schedule ? This team needs to learn to play together, to know one another and to find out who they are. I do feel for the fans who have to watch them play a few patsies. I don't have that luxury though I wish I did. However, I imagine a beating or win over Nichols State is preferable to a loss against a much higher ranked Big East Team. Remember the experts still have us 9th in the BE. I remain optimistic that we will double our win total if not better.

A reasoned dose of reality.

The downside is that our not ready for prime time team loses to Nichols State.

after last year I'd rather have a cupcake schedule even if i stops us later on from getting in the tourney which I don't think we are getting into anyway

This year it's better to pad the win column than have a killer schedule with no moral victories in losses
