2015 Bracketology

The way I see it, we need to win the next 4 in a row to feel 100% secure heading into the tourney. 3-1 heading into Nova, means we will either need to upset them or win 1 game in the BE tourney.

Boy would it be nice to be 3-0 heading into Wisconsin in early March

Indeed. We'd be playing for a bid in wisky. My prediction is we go 2-1 in next 3, beat Marquette, and have 2 opportunities for a bid, against nova and in the BET. hopefully we just win the next 4 like you said and get in with ease.

If we win 3 out of our last 4 we would definitely be in the tournament. That means we either sweep X or beat Gtown. It would be nice to win 1 in the BE but I don't think it would be necessary. It would just be for seeding. If we win 3 of 4 and 1 in the BE we would be 7-9 seed otherwise 10-12 seed. Then again keep winning and we enjoy the rest of the season. 1 at a time.

9-9 I think we might squeak in but boy would we be sweating bullets during the selection show. Better to be safe than sorry. The way I see it:

10-8 = IN
9-9 = maybe in but shaky
9-9 + a BET win = IN

Agree, but it seems like we are always sweating bullets, so that is probably the predicament we will be in. I am heading to the BE tourney so I would love to see a nice run by us.

Every year my dad tells me if we make it to Friday night (semifinals) then we will go. We never do :p

I have the same mindset. Would rather overpay for semifinals tickets and see the team play with house money than be at a 1st round game in a must-win situation and chew my nails off.

The last time SJU won the tourney, I was there and that was the last time that I went to the BE. Hopefully that will be a good omen. Get your credit card ready.

I think we need to win 4 of our last 5 to secure a bid prior to the BE Tournament. This Seton Hall game scares the hell out of me for some reason. If we get past Seton Hall, and get somewhat healthy, I think we do it.

Xavier and Georgetown games will be huge of course.

On one hand, Xavier is a team we beat and they are looking for revenge, maybe have some more confidence after Cincy win.

Then we have hoyas, who whipped our ass. That's our revenge game. But it's our senior day at the garden.

It's all laid out for our guys. Win 4 in a row here. 2 games are against teams you are better than, 1 game is a team you've already beaten. 3/4 games are at home. It's all right there. Team gives me hope because they are capable of playing like they did against Xavier, but team also scares because they can play awful the next game. We will have to wait and see what happens. Starts with the pirates

I dunno, if we take care of Seton Hall and Marquette, and beat only one of Xavier/Georgetown/Nova, that's adding another good win to our resume, but are we really going to be penalized for losing to two top 50 RPI teams? Our RPI won't suffer much if we beat Xavier and lose to Nova on the road and Georgetown at home. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I agree. If we beat Marquette and SH, and then win one of the games against Georgetown, Xavier and Nova, we should be in. That should leave us at 5 top 50 wins which is actually very high for bubble teams.

I also am worried about SHU. People think this will be an easy win. But the reasons it scares the hell out of us are; injuries, we looked horrible against GT, we don't have BE caliber backups except Branch. And when DLO was off against GT, Jorden looked just as bad and did not pickup the slack.

We are in the thick of the bubble, here are some games we could use tonight to help us a bit

Southern Miss over Old Dominion
Indiana over Purdue (big one)
SMU over Temple
Rutgers over Iowa (would be big)
St Mary's over Portland
San Diego over BYU

Lunardi pushes us down from a 10 seed, to one of the last 2 teams in the tournament. That's a little steep for losing on the road against a good team ( I think so anyway, but of course, I'm biased)...

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/bracketology

Maybe he doesn't think we'll win enough games after seeing how we did at Georgetown. The brackets are in part predictions I think.

I think stinking up the joint weighs on the minds of decision makers -- too many ugly games if you are a bubbler and you are screwed.

Looking back now, I think it had more to do with Minnesota falling out of the top 100, after losing to Northwestern last night. One less top 100 victory for us (though at 102, the Gophers could get back in).

Seriously, nice job with these posts Jack. And yes, make sure you do your school homework! :cheer:

Syracuse up 8 on #12 Louisville with 3 minutes remaining!

Syracuse beats Louisville by ten and Xavier beats #36 Cincy on the road! Nice.

That puts Cincy on the outside looking in and firmly on our hip. Gotta love being 2-0 against common opponents against a fellow bubble team. Syracuse can really help us out the next few weeks.

It's crazy, eight days ago Cincy was a 7 seed...now they are on the wrong side of the bubble.

Not quite

Do you think Cincy would be in if the season ended today?
They would have to be behind both us and Xavier. We both have better RPIs now, all three schools have similar records, SJU and Xavier have better SOSs (disparity will only grow), we are 2-0 and Cincy is 0-2 (both home games) against common opponents, Xavier beat Cincy head to head on the road, and both SJU and Xavier play in a better conference (both objectively and subjectively) than Cincy. Not to mention Cincy has now lost three in a row and four of the last six. Cincy is 0-4 against teams from big conferences (losses to Big East, Big Ten, A-10, and SEC schools).

The season clearly isn't over, but if it was it would be: St. John's, Xavier, Cincy on the bubble ladder. SJU and Xavier in, Cincy out.

Big win by Xavier tonight.

Cincy is projected at a 10 seed in the tournament right now. So are we. If a loss to Georgetown doesn't knock us out of the field a loss to Xavier shouldn't knock them out. They will be in the last four byes or last four in but for now on the right side of the bubble in my opinion I could be wrong.

That's where you are wrong, my friend. Our loss to Gtown (a top 25 RPI team) was on the road...it is counted less in the RPI formula and that is why we only slid a few spots. Cincy lost at home to Xavier--allowing both of us bubble teams to jump them in the RPI and they slid all the way to #49 with an awful SOS upcoming. Cincy's margin of error is razor thin at this point. A loss to any of their next three opponents will render their chances at an at-large bid nearly impossible.

Well my point was the loss wouldn't get them on the wrong side of the bubble at least yet. And joe lunardi backed my point by having them in the field today
