2015 Bracketology

Love the A&M matchup and possible matchup against duke but gotta get down to the 7 or 6 line to avoid any possibility of Kentucky. What a kick in the nuts that would be, first tournament in 4 years and we know we are no better than a one and done

Moving on up! Although I do not for the life of me understand how we are an 8 seed. IMO we should be a 7, and NO I don't think that's nitpicking

Our RPI on the NCAA site is mid 30's, so an 8 seed makes sense (8X4=32). Of course I hope we avoid the 8 seed when the actual bracket comes out. Playing Duke in Charlotte? What a joke.

I think our resume is way better than Xavier's because of our record against them. they are a fellow 8 seed. And I also think we have a better resume than Mich State and Ohio State who have 2 or 3 decent wins and that's it.

Xavier does better in advanced stats because they lost a LOT of really close games (including the ones vs. us). Their win/loss record isn't great but they lost 3 OOC games by a combination of 8 points and a few BE games in OT.

If that matters, what about us losing two nail biters to top 5 teams in duke and Gonzaga? Xavier didn't have close losses to any teams of that caliber

It does matter especially in seeding and is reflected in other metrics. RPI only measures W/L. Other factors like BPI and Kenpom use margin of wins. Kenpom has them 27 us 36. BPI they're 29 we're 43. Everyone remembers the close losses (Duke actually wasn't close anyways in the box score and Gonzaga was still 6 points at home) but forget the close wins (which SJU has had a lot of recently). Xavier is a team that truly is better than their record with a lot more close losses than wins. Look at their schedule and you'll see what I mean.

Since when does being better than your record matter? You are what you are. If you can't close tight games then tough luck.

Both matter. RPI matters more in terms of getting in. Other metrics matter more in terms of sending. Just how it is.

Games that matter to us tonight:

Baylor over Texas 7 PM (Texas might be out already, currently clinging to life on the bubble)
Syracuse over Virginia 7 PM (for our RPI)

Will we be ranked in today's polls?

I'm guessing no, but we will be among the top 3 or 4 in Others Receiving Votes.

@NJHoopsHaven: AP Top 25 just came in. Villanova 4th, Maryland 10th, Providence 24th, St. John's 29th (receiving votes)

All we should care about is a number next to SJU on selection Sunday.

True that. In the big scheme, that's all that matters.
But in the meantime, I'm just making conversation.

Plus, it probably gives you a good idea of where we actually stand right now.

I know what happened to SMU last year, ranked 25th going into the conference tournament, but that was a very rare exception (and our metrics this year are better then their's were).

I understand.

If Syracuse can some how win out their last two games then that would probably be enough to get us our 6th Top 50 RPI win.

Syracuse is so useless. They look atrocious against UVA and aren't trying.

If Syracuse and Minnesota didn't fall off the map we may have already clinched a berth.

Virginia plays great defense and Syracuse can't shoot. They just cut it to 10. Maybe they can make a run.

Their intensity is up since when I posted that but UVA really went on a run earlier and Syracuse didn't look like they were trying to get rebounds. Now it's probably too late.

The one year we root for them and the one year they won't finish top 50.

They are playing five players against the number two team in the country. Not a good match.

Texas defeats 14th-ranked Baylor in overtime, to get back on the bubble. There was a big fight during the OT period, leading to six ejections
