Not to be the wet blanket but riddle me this. All the pundits say if we win Saturday we are in. That means they believe we can finish 0-3 and be secure? Even though the stats may not back up my claim, I want a Marquette victory no matter what happens on Saturday

Agreed. Can't back into the tournament. I would love to win the BET.

Bubble Watch Update:

St. John's [19-9 (8-7), RPI: 34, SOS: 37] On Feb. 3, Butler manhandled St. John's in Hinkle Fieldhouse and dropped the Red Storm to 3-6 in Big East play. The end of the Red Storm's once-promising season -- and possibly head coach Steve Lavin's tenure -- felt all but copy edited. The early hype. The mysterious conference decline. The long, slow, agonizing limp to the finish. Less than a month later, the script has officially been flipped. After Monday, St. John's has won five of its past six, including two wins over Xavier, a stretch that had already lifted the Red Storm a notch or two from the bubble morass before Monday's results. With a home game against Georgetown Saturday, D'Angelo Harrison & Co. have a chance to really firm this thing up -- if not seal it all together -- at the best possible moment. It might not be "Hoosiers," but it's been a great little turnaround.

Coaching Staff deserves a lot of credit for keeping the team together during that down time so we could make this great turnaround.

Looking ahead we likely will finish 4th or 5th in BE standings (that dreaded 2:30 weekday BE tourney game). Would you guys rather a) face Butler and avenge those 2 losses or b) face PC and authoritatively stamp 3-0 season on them.

Personally I'd like to take on Butler, prefer being the hunter rather than hunted.

It's a stretch to think we can beat Providence 3x in the same season. Bring on Butler.

Providence, just a much better match up.
You think villanova is worried about beating DePaul for a 3rd time.
Stupid logic, something smith would use.

Agreed. I don't think a win on Saturday puts us in-in. I think it makes a bid ours to lose, meaning that the only way we could flush it is by going 0-3 v. Marq, Nova, and first round BET. Could we still get in under those circumstances? I'm sure, but I have no interest in finding out. This process is so fluid, the general perception of a team can change weekly. Even with a win Saturday, if we haven't won a game in 2 weeks the outlook on us will be much different than it is now on Selection Sunday.

This all said, I think we win Saturday and don't go 0-3 so this doesn't come into play.

What a picture. Hopefully CO can use some of their techniques to neutralize big boy Smith on Saturday

I agree even if we beat Gtown then lose the next 2 and the 1st one in the BE tourney we will not get a bid. I remember guys were posting we would have a shot with 8-10 in the conference .

As a general rule I think you always need one more than you think you do as a fan base. As fans we are so dug in on every detail of our team that our view isn't likely to be completely in line with the committee's. An extra win will typically make up for that if you're talking about feeling comfortable on Selection Sunday.

You can't really just look at these things in a vacuum, it would also depend on how the rest of the bubble performs. If we beat GT, that adds another top 25 RPI win. If we lost to Nova on the road and say Providence in the BET, we wouldn't really be penalized. The only worry is really Marquette on the road, because that would be counted as a bad loss. However, with that GT win, our resume would be alot more impressive than most bubble teams. Still nothing is guaranteed pending results around the country.

I'll tell you what I always told my kids when trying out for travel teams, AAU teams, CYO teams, or HS teams. Don't shoot for the last position on the team, or compare yourself to the 5th starter and complain why you didn't make it or aren't playing. Shoot for the 2nd or third starter (if reasonable), or make the team by a safe margin. I don't want to be in a room on selection Sunday at 9-9 and hopefully 21-11 (w one BET win), and be hoping we are a bubble team that makes the cut. I know everyone feels differently but I say the objective here is to run the table and hope for a 4 or 5 seed.

The logic isn't stupid, Villanova obviously isn't worried about beating Depaul because they are one of the best teams in the country (though an upset wouldn't be anywhere near impossible). Matching up with PC for the third time could be deadly because motivation in the BET is at a season high, and in many ways, PC can play better than us and is more than capable of winning.

That being said I agree that the PC matchup is better than the Butler one, but we are due for a win against butler. I also thing there is a high chance we play Georgetown in the 4/5 game.

Honestly I sadly wish we could be a 6 seed in the BET, simply because Villanova is scary good, while the 2-10 seeds will be practical, winnable games.

Indeed, a perfect example last season. A win over Prov in the BE tourney wouldn't have earned us a bid and everyone thought it was a play in game. Need to leave no doubt, beat Gtown, and Marq.

That's true but our RPI is in way better shape than last year

The way I see it, we need to win the next 4 in a row to feel 100% secure heading into the tourney. 3-1 heading into Nova, means we will either need to upset them or win 1 game in the BE tourney.

@ Marquette

Boy would it be nice to be 3-0 heading into Wisconsin in early March

Since we all agree that two is the magic number, it's nice to look back on where we were even a week ago and know that half the job is done!
