2012/13 roster

Not sure about his status, but even if he has to wait I'm sure he will stay...after getting CO he must realize this is a top 5 big east team in terms of potential. With Cuse, Pitt, and WVU leaving the Big East, SJ can really start to establish top 3 dominance and hang with GTown, and Nova.

Fwiw, Wood tweeting he starts in July and is tweeting with a buddy abut pickup games between SJU and HU(Hofstra?). If I had to guess, it seems like he is/expects to be qualified. If we have Wood entering this season in addition to Obekpa we can be fantastic this year. I think it also means that Lavin expects D'Lo to declare pro after ts season which wouldn't surprise me. I wish the best for the kid if that is the case.

Correct you are Marcus, DLo does not expect to be around for his junior season so adding Wood gives us an adequate replacement if DLo has a big sophomore season.

Yeah, I always got the sense that we'd get 2 years out of D'Angelo. If he has a real good year, no sense not to take a crack at it. He's the type that won't improve his stock a ton by staying all 4 years because he doesn't have the length and athleticism like guys like Harkless. Like I said though, I'm fine with that. He's a good player that I think will catch on in the NBA. If he doesn't, he'll make big bucks in Europe. Frankly I think D'Lo should consider havin Lavin help him get a foot into sports broadcasting. He has that natural charisma that I think would go over really well on camera and is pretty well spoken and funny. Back to topic though, seems Wood is intent on being at SJU this season.

In the "nice problem to have" category, suppose both Chandler and Wood qualify this year. I would expect Chandler is first priority, right? Where does that leave Wood, who seems committed to playing hoops for us?

I love Harrison's game and moxie, but I don't see him being an NBA draftee after this season. Unless, he plans on going abroad, then I expect him to be back in 2013-2014. Nevertheless, it would be terrific if Wood ends up being eligible. He has an assortment of ways to place the ball in the hole.

I want D'Angelo here for 4 years if we could keep him here that long. I just think he might be a bit antsy to make some dough.

Would he leave though if he's only being projected as a "possible" 2nd rounder? Tough to say.
No doubt the man is entitled to earn a paycheck when he feels he's ready to.
But I'm not sure Dlo would leave knowing he's going to Europe .. ala Cheek or even Wayns. Different situations, and Dangelo is a different player ... but what do you think?
Would he leave without the confidence he'll be a first round pick? Or even knowing he's going to Europe?

I really have no doubt in my mind that Deangelo can play in the League. Hell find a way to score.

No doubt Mase ? How many 6'2 shooting guards do you see in the NBA who aren't freak athletes?
Dwight averaged 18 a game for us and was a player of the year finalist... undrafted. Same for Scottie Reynolds, a first team all-american.

I don't think it's a knock on D'angelo. The NBA is just a different game. You can be a great college player, and not have a place in the NBA. The two aren't directly related.

If Hatten and Hardy weren't good enough to play in the NBA, I don't see Harrison there at this point in his development

He just knows how to play. Hes fierce, competitive, and as courageous as they come. Hes not gonna be a go to option, but put that kid in a big time spot and he will come through. Not a doubt in my mind.

Hes a better ball handler than Hardy and a better shooter than Hatten. And thats as a freshmen

Yeah, but Dwight Hardy was only a 10 pt scorer and a reserve as a college JUNIOR, while D'Lo was one of the top 3 freshman scorers in D-1. BIG difference in terms of perceived potential (which is what the NBA is going on these days) BTW, I think Dwight makes a roster this coming season.

The "tape" will also have an impact. Both SJU and ESPN list D'lo at 6'3 205 lbs. If those are legit measurements, I can find you plenty of combo guards who've been drafted and made the league at similar size.

All I know (as a UCLA fan as well as an SJU one) is that if I was given a choice at guard between D'Lo and Malcolm Lee, it would be an absolute no-brainer in Harrison's favor. And Lee made over half a million as an early entry rookie guard for the T'Wolves this season.

To be fair, Dwight did not play 40 minutes a night either so difficult to compare.

I was the first on these boards to post about Harkless being a lottery pick (I thought after his soph year) and I was all over Harrison last summer--I even predicted he'd score 50 at some point in his career! I don't think Harrison has pro size or athletic ability. It was never more clear than against Pitt in the Big East Tournament. He looked dreadfully S-L-O-W.  Physical talent and skill are two very different categories. Harrison has all the skill in the world, but he's, at best, 6'2 with below average length.

Nobody has as tougher hill to climb than undersized combo guards. Harrison has to show me more to make me believe he can play in the NBA. His skill is off the charts, but I think most NBA teams have 3-4 guys on the court at any given time that can stay in front of Harrison--with superior length to challenge his shots in ways he'll never see in college. His forays to the lane will exponentially more difficult even if he can get past his man. The NBA is all about height and length these days.

I think Wood is a much more attractive NBA prospect. If he is actually 6'5--I could easily see him as a first rounder. I know that claim will invite some hecklers, but so be it...the kid is going to be really good.

I like Wood too. He's a little out of control at times, but has long arms, great athlete, nice stroke and a scorers mentality. Good coaching for a few years and he can be really good.

Dlo has the heart of a lion and plenty of skills and strength. He needs speed and that can be enhanced. A lot will also depend on how we do and whether we make the post season. He's my fave and it'll be fun rooting for him to impress this year. It would also be great if he could show the versatility to play some point like Hardy did. I watch the Heat and think how they could us a guy like Dlo to supply smarts off the bench. Fingers crossed for him.

I agree. But I'm not a personal trainer, so while I have no doubt that running in the sand with a weight belt/ankle weights and a parachute, or running full speed in waist-deep water, would enhance speed, I'm still not sure how much gain he'd achieve.

And after all that, I'm still not sure the speed he'd gain would help overcome his height in the eyes of the NBA.

On the college level, though, he is an absolute stud.

Fortunately, Rico Hines IS. Not just "a" personal trainer, but one of the very best at both the Collegiate AND NBA level. While with Golden State he was credited with coaching up 7 NBDL level kids into NBA level - by enhancing speed, agility and skillset. Didn't think there was a chance in he11 VMI's Reggie Williams was anything more than a career Euro. But since his year working with Rico, he's a 3 year NBA vet, and a career double digit scorer.who drew a 2.5 million dollar paycheck from the Bobcats this past season.

I don't know that D'Lo can be a star at the next level, but I do believe he can be a solid contributor - and that's more than enuf to get him drafted early and in development.

Like Wood have not seen him play only reports about him 1st round pick.anything is possible Looks a little like Jeramy.Lamb.

Before getting to happy, is Sampson, Obapka and Balamou a sure bet to come this year?

I ask because I remember last year getting all happy and excited but then Sampson and Norvel could come and Garrett couldn`t play until the second semester.

So before getting to excited this year first I want to see these 3 come

All 3 are ready to go from everything I've heard.
