2012/13 roster

I'd think GG or Sanchez would start at center over Sampson and Sampson at the 4. Point will be moot since I think we are either getting Chandler or Nolan or both

MJ, you think the staff might revert to starting GG after they limited his minutes the second half of last season? And that was when we only had 6 guys.

I think they saw what GG is and felt they were better off with an undersized fresh-5. Can't see that changing really. I think Sanchez and Jakkar both start. Can't really call either one a 5, but if Chandler doesn't come my bet is we go with both, and bring GG off the bench.

Sampson isn't playing center with Sanchez and GG here. We will still sign a center. Not sure why people getting their panties in a bunch. Lavin builds the team the way he sees fit. Anybody who can't see how good this class is already is crazy. UCLA had about 5 bigs and we ran circles around them with a 6-man team. Howland is adding about 5 more bigs this season. I really like the way our team is beng built personally. I certainly think we need one more big body and pretty sure we'll get it.

Agreed GG would need to improve dramatically in order to start. I dont think we currently have a true center in the roster. Think if season started today we start 3 forwards Sampson, Sanchez and Garrett with Branch and Harrison. If Nolan or Chandler are here one of them start over Sanchez.

He could improve over the summer or Sanchez could play there. Sanchez is supposedly a really really good passer so I could easily see him start if need be especially since we are going to be playing real uptempo and I could see Sanchez being lethal on the fast break.

But my gut tells me we are getting minimum 1 of the 2 of Nolan/Chandler and wouldn't be shocked with both with the roll Lavin is on all the sudden

He was also gassed last year playing down low all by himself. Like MJ said its a moot point but as currently constructed now I also think GG would be starting center.

I think we play most of the game "small." I put small iln quotations, because we wouldn't really be all that small with a front court of 6'6 - 6'8 - 6'8 .

The value having a better athlete like Sanchez or Sampson playing the five is making us a much more dangerous team pressing and in transition. No big man in the country is keeping up with those guys down the court. That probably outweighs any detrimental effect not having a true half court plodder at center would bring. Who cares if we lose a few putbacks or have them get backed down a few times for layups. No way we can't take the inbounds with their center 94 feet from the basket and have our center beat them to their basket.

Our problem last year wasn't really that we were small. That's where I think people are mistaken. We were hurt more because we didn't have the depth to defend as aggressively as we would have liked. When a bigger player got the ball in the post, we pretty much had to let them go and score for fear of foul trouble. We will be bigger this year as well. Small was our final 8 team. This years team isn't small and once again, I still see us landing another big guy.

The other thing is that I still thing Gift being sold a bit short. His number last year were quite good for a first year JC player with no help inside. This year he will at minimum have Sanchez and a very nice inside presence in Sampson next to him.

This year our depth, length and athleticism will allow us to do a TON of things we weren't able to do last year, including be more aggressive in the post.

It's still imperative that Chandler qualifies and/or we get Nolan. Playing small ball should only be utilized for 10-15 minutes a game and only in situations where coach sees fit. Can't understate how much quality depth at the 5 helps us protect the rim. I actually couldn't disagree more with the thought that it's not significant if we allow a few inside buckets and put backs as long as Sanchez or Sampson outrun their bigs down the court. I'd much rather have an athletic big man like Nolan at the 5 who will learn to rebound and alter shots in the interior. This is still the Big East not the PAC 12 gentlemen

Mike, don't we only have 1 left to give?

I think 1 but does anyone know what the schollie status is with Hooper ? Lavin at UCLA ( CR can probably help us with this one ) got creative I think sometimes when he needed to with schollies so while like Moose has said for awhile that there is schollie in the bank waiting for Chandler my guess is if Nolan commits Lavin works his schollie magic and we have an available one for him also

Im confused. There seems to be mixed signals in the various posts here. Is Balamou gonna be a Johnnie or not?

It was confusing me too. Seems like a lot of posters felt with Wood signing this weekend, Balamou would go elsewhere.

I didn't know where those rumors were coming from.

I can take a lot of that blame because I mentioned it casually as a gut feeling on Jungle. Its very clear the staff is targeted 2 big men. And right now there is only 1 scholarship available. So with the thought of a Wood or Turner committing I just had a feeling something was up with the guard situation because it was getting more crowded. I've been told that its not the case. So something is up somewhere with the extra scholarship. And I don't think anyone is transferring because that news would have come out already.

Moose, How come since Hooper can't play til 2013 do we need to use a scolly on him for 2012?? Theres got to be a way around that I would think

Just because a player is sitting a year you still have to have a schollie for him. I give up with regards to Hooper. I personally think something would have been said already if we planned to have him walk on or academic schollie or whatever.

I think if we get Nolan and Chandler , and everyone qualifies, Hooper is a walk on, if not he is a scholi. Last scholi has to come from somewhere.
