2012/13 roster

Do you think, if the season started today, this would be our starting five....

PG - Jamal Branch
SG - D'Angelo Harrisson
SF - Sir Dom Pointer
PF - Jakarr Sampson
C - Orlando Sanchez

  Garrett or Pointer--- close call.

I don't think it is going to be that close. Porter starts. He is going to be spending the entire spring and summer concentrating on basketball and he should be significantly better than he was last year. No knock on Amir. I love him to death but he's not going to be taking 500 jumpers a day.

Re MJ/TIS's dicussion at this point with confirmed commitments Sanchez is a C as much if not more than Moe/Gift were last year, in reality if there were no additions it really means that it would be the second season in a row with no center. FWIW you can review a number of rosters around the country and many of them also don't have any centers. Hopefully over the next few weeks there is a better option as far as a true C.

Really? I don't know, from what I saw of Orlando during the 2 games I watched he never played with his back to the basket. He was the definition of a combo (sf/pf)  in his games for Monroe. Now I'm not saying he doesn't have the size to play down low.. he does. But he wasn't a back to the basket-offensive player, or a low post shot blocker.

Now maybe the staff molds him into a center, but I think Gift came in more ready to play the center position than Sanchez is. Orlando's got more skills, they're just not low post skills from what I saw (better ball handler, passer, etc)
His rebounding however, seemed above average though. So that is important if he's going to be utilized like you think.

Does anyone know much about Michael Gbinije? Ranked #35 in last year's class by Rivals and he's transferring from Duke. He's listed as 6'7 205 as a small forward. Won't help this year, but wonder if we'll give him a look.

Moe played the C last year more than Gift. Think he was a C? The gist of the point was STJ hasn't had anything resembling a real center since I don't know when, Lamont? Gift isn't going to start so who plays C in peoples hearts and minds, if not really in reality? Jakarr or Sanchez? Obviously we are all hoping this dicussion is moot in the next couple weeks with a true C joining the roster. The way this team has played during the last couple years C was just a position in the zone and meant nothing on the offensive end anyway.

You get the feeling that if Chandler qualifies he's not going to be the only recruiting news for us over the next few weeks.

Where's Bobre ? :)

I agree with you. Both will be improved, but I'm expecting Dom to improve his shot considerably from 10-15 feet and bring another dimension. If he can do that, he'll be a load for defends to handle.

Garrett is going to make a serious jump next year. I can't see him not starting. Pointer has a LONG way to go offensively. If we are an up and down team that presses and is always moving Dom will thrive, but Garrett is by the far the better half court player and it's not even close. I really think Garrett will be hitting about a 33% clip from deep with three attempts per game next year, but I have no idea how his baseball schedule will affect things.

I know its been said, but I wanted to confirm. Branch has 3.5 years of eligibility left correct? Where I am confused is since he played the fall semester, how that doesn't take up a year, but if it is 3.5 I will take it. This team is shaping up nicely. Hammer to rock

His freshman year is gone. He is a sophomore next year and only has 2.5 years. He will play around Dec 20th based on typical STJ fall semester ending then his entire Jr and Sr year.

This doesn't make too much sense. Why does he lose a year of eligibility? If he played out the year with Texas A&M and then transferred he would still have 3 years left after sitting out a year. Does he get penalized for leaving in the middle of the season?

I was jeaulous when Moose was able to beat me in answering this question for the 54th time so thanks for letting me do it again.

College eligibility is measured in seasons, not portions thereof. You have 5 years to play four seasons. Guys who transfer over the summer don't play any partial seasons so they get 4 full seasons of play but if you transfer between the first and second semester that is not the case. Like Moose said last year was his freshman year, next year is his sophomore year. He played and will play enough in those two years for them to count as full seasons and then will have truly full seasons as a Jr and Sr. FWIW if he wanted 3 full years of eligibility he is welcome to sit out the entire year next year and come back to the court in October of 2013 but I don't recall anyone ever doing that without an injury.
Seem to recall one who did, believe it may have been Matt Brust who transferred after one semester at NC sat for year and a half and played 3 full seasons as a transfer. I could be wrong on who.

Matt Brust, North Carolina -> St. John's

84-85 UNC 8 games
85-86 St John's Did Not Play - Transfer Student
86-87 St John's 30 games
87-88 St John's 29 games
88-89 St John's 33 games

The reason he got to play 3 years is because he sat out a whole year. If Branch sat out next year he would have 3 years of eligibility. Even though he is coming in Dec ,NCAA counts next year as a year. Note: Brust did not get 3 1/2 more years even though he only played 8 games as a FR.

It's really simple. Your 4 years of eligibility aren't measured in half seasons.
If you play in a game, doesn't matter if it's the beginning of the season or the end - you've used up a year of your eligibility. (occasionally if you play in only 1 or 2 games and get hurt; the ncaa will give you a waiver).

And that's true for all college sports. If you played in a game - that counts as a year of your eligibility. No halves.

It gets confused with the transfer rule- which says you must be at your new school for 2 semesters before you can play in a game for them.
Therefore, it presents a dilemma to unhappy freshmen- do you transfer after 1st semester, and get to play the next winter ? Or do you play your whole freshmen season, and then transfer, meaning you have to sit out for a full season?

Unless you for some reason are granted red shirt status at the original school before you decide to transfer. And thanks for the info on Mat Brust. I believe his first year at STJ was my first as an MSG season tix holder.

Thanks Desco - that's the clearest explanation I've heard of that rule!

Wow, just a few weeks ago we had tons of ships to give and now we're down to 2.
Hope these 2 are used wisely.
With gift being next year's lone senior, I count 3 left for the next 2 classes (including the present one).

Sampson could be one and done. D'Angelo could also leave if he has a big year and raises his shooting percentage.

OK, show me why we brought in 4 2G/SF's (our team's strengths) and now Sampson is our likely starting center?

Tom are you really pissed at the talent level brought in? Would you rather have Leroy Fludd, and Jaquan Lynch and other PSAL guys here? I mean come on. And for the 90th time there will be at least 1 center here. You know that, you've been told that by me and others.

What are the chances Sampson is our starting center this season?
